Ebay etiquette - what should a seller do when an item is described incorrectly?

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal: I bought a golf bag. I've been looking far and wide for a single strap bag, and I found out that most Callaway Mini Loopers are single strap. I purchased one on ebay, explicitly described as having a "single strap." The one image did not show the strap at all. I got the bag, and it had a conventional double strap setup.

I asked him to refund the purchase price + shipping, plus pay for return shipping. He refused, and said he wouldn't refund shipping, and wouldn't pay for return shipping.

I haven't heard from him in like a week. What would you do in this situation? I'm thinking about just leaving negative feedback and calling it a day.

I would definitely leave negative feedback.

I disagree. If the item is incorrectly advertised, it's fully on the seller.

This is correct.
BUT I as a seller on Ebay would totally refund your money plus all the shipping. I made the mistake. Why should you be out anything for his mistake. The shipping part is the chance you take sometimes when you buy on Ebay. I had a seller one time send me the wrong club and I tried to return it. He pulled the same thing on me so I just listed it and made a quick 70 bucks off of it. He didn't realize right away that I got someone's elses more exspensive club. I tried to do the right thing and he wanted to screw me out of the shipping..So I just sold it and bought the club I wanted from someone else and had some money left over. But I only will refund the shipping if I mess up the listing. You getting the right item and not liking it or claim the condition not right then I might refund your money less shipping. I am anal so you always get a better then described item from me.

I agree with Opus, leave negative feedback and walk away. Just make sure you don't buy something from a pic if the pic doesn't show exactly what you want to see; and request further details on the item before bidding.

Think about, you didn't ask enough questions or for pics to verify the item is what you're looking for; yet you want him to eat all the costs. Doesn't sound right to me for a few reasons.

If the seller describes the item as specifically having a single strap and then sends you something with a dual strap it's 100% on him in my opinion.

I understand where you're coming from as I carry my bag on the left shoulder and thus specifically need a single strap carry bag. One with a dual strap is worse than useless in my situation and, if I've taken the time to find a single strap bag and been told that it's precisely that by the seller I can't see any reason whatsoever that I should be out of pocket when he drops a clanger and sends me something else.

I didn't even know that the bag potentially came with a dual strap, which I why I didn't think to ask for a picture showing the single strap.

edit: The strap is kind of hidden behind the bag in the one photo, and the photo was a stock photo, not of the actual item.

The item description said "single strap." Would you have me request pictures to verify that the bag had a feature it was explicitly described as having?

Based on what I just saw, "yes" ask for further clairfiation. I read the whole add and you're right the strap isn't viewable. It says "Features a “double-wide” single carry strap". That is confusing to me. If the seller wouldn't provide a picture of the carry strap(s) I would phone Callaway for further clarification.

It's also shown on Callaway's site.

Am I being gullible in assuming that a 'double wide (sic) single carry strap' means a single strap that's perhaps wider than the norm?

You're exactly right. It's a wide single strap.

What's interesting is the seller has 500+ positive feed back; "0" negative. Which leads me to give him the benefit of the doubt since he described the bag accurately.

I must admit, looking at the seller-provided photo there does seem to be an attachment atop the bag that looks characteristically double strap-esque. If there is such a phrase.

That said, the seller has specifically stated that it's got a single strap. It shouldn't be for me, as a buyer, to start examining photographs and making educated guesses as to what sort of strap arrangement it's got based on an cropped photograph from a catalogue. I should be able to take the seller at his word; and in this case he's dropped a clanger by specifically stating that the bag has a single strap when it has in fact got a double strap set-up. He's not described it accurately and, as such, the buyer has potentially made a purchase that he wouldn't otherwise have made had he known the true nature of the item.

To me, as someone who can't use a double strap carry bag because of my left shoulderedness, that's a significant misrepresentation and I'd be expecting the seller to own up to his mistake and see me right as regards returning the item and footing the bill for all postage charges.

Thank you for posting the auction link. I see he did describe it as a double wide single strap, which iis consistent with the Callaway link provided by another poster.

I believe you're right and shouldn't be put out of pocket.

Cursor down the page, he states in BIG BOLD PRINT - features a “double-wide” single carry strap; exactly the same words that Callaway uses to describe the bag on their site.

To the OP, sorry but the seller stated exactly what the carry system was. At that point it's the buyers responsiblity to know what he wants, and what's its called. Besides as I said earlier its easy to see the straps on Callaways site. IMO the seller should not have to pay because the buyer didn't do proper due diligence.

Why would you even think of asking for more clarification? Features a "double-wide" single carry strap says it all. The link you provide also shows a "double-wide" single carry strap. I wouldn't have thought to ask about the strap unless nothing was posted about the strap. I think the seller took the lazy way out. Stock photo and pasted the description off of something and didn't realize his had a different harness. I think in this case the OP has every right to ask for all his money back. It was listed wrong.

I dont agree at all, why should he have to pay for shipping if the item was not listed correctly???
Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. I bought what I thought ( and descibed by the seller ) a ping Rapture V2 but got the original Rapture.
The seller refund my purchase price and shipping to me, but I had to pay for the shipping back to her.It really p^ssed me off but what could I do? Pay- pal considered it a full refund.
As a buyer you are Assuming ( I know what happenes when you assume ) the items are correct in their description, and if the seller was incorrect, they should have to pay for all the costs to fix the problem.

Its called taking responsibility for your actions and mistakes, a lost form these days

But I wasn't sold the bag that Callaway describes on their site? I was sold some unlisted variation that has a dual strap.

He cut and pasted a description of a product that had one carry system, and sent me a product with a different carry system.

Yeah, that was exactly my thinking.

Pepperturbo:
Here is a link to the bag I was actually sent. As you can see, it's not the bag listed on the Callaway site, but rather a variation of the bag with a dual strap replacing the single strap listed on the Callaway site.

Like you always see in these types of threads...

Stock Photo = Flag

If your unsure by the photo, a simple email to the seller asking your question is all it takes. Then if its still wrong when you recieve it, you have documented proof of a bad sale ect ect.

I've had the same thing happen. All I could do was file a claim with paypal and they gave me what they called a FULL REFUND which is the policy of ebay/paypal. Original total costs thats it. You will never get the additional shipping it takes to send the item back, even if its the wrong item. I know it sucks but thats the way the rules are set up. There's the very very rare occasion where the seller admitts he made a mistake and offers to pay for everything. But that is very very very rare! Find the cheapest shipping to send back and call it a learning experience. JMO

If you file a claim with PayPal and win atleast you will only be out the return shipping.
