The "Official" Winter 2009/2010 Survival Thread

With the cold crappy weather forecast for the northeast this weekend, it's time to start this year's cold weather, "it sucks to be outside," "I hate the cold," "what equipment do you have to survive the cold?," "what are the rules of golf in the cold?," "I'd rather be at the beach :beach: ," survival thread.

Feel free to comiserate if you live someplace cold, or make us jealous if you live someplace warm. We should ban the guys from Hawaii, but we love it there too much to do that! :friends:

About the same as you IntheHole in maryland today. 40's no sun and a cold rain all day. Can't imagine what it will be like tomorrow for the Yankees/Angels game.

I'm hoping on a few more rounds by mid to late November before I officially put the spikes away. During the winter, it will be plenty of stretching and better eating and exercise to recapture some of that distance I lost this year. I Really mean it this time!!!

I survive the non-golf days by going to my instructor who has a heated bay to hit balls out of while he teaches. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday-drive down, get a lesson, hit balls, get some clubs tinkered with, eat lunch, drive home. Sounds better than going out and slicing, hooking, shanking and three putting!

I have a sweet cart cover and Coleman cart heater, setup works like a charm! I mount my Ipod speakers to the cart and simply enjoy the outdoors in peace good golf or not; no slow trolls too. I will do this until the courses force me out then I start my silly season and shoot guns! Did I mention FOOTBALL; lots of football...BB

dont remind me. Last round is saturday. It' horrible outside now but it's supposed to be nice on saturday (50 and sunny is nice enough for me).

I'll take a 2 month break then start practicing on the simulator at my course in Januaray / Feb. I'll head to florida in March and be ready for the season by April!

I play bball once a week and workout once or twice a week to keep busy

Went from 80s to mid 30s low 40s and misting for about a week. Its 60 right now. Almost perfect. But this winter, I will carpet putt until my putter gets to begin to feel as an extention of my arm. But I play well into the winter. As long as there is no snow on the driving range or on the greens I play. Heated carts and winter gloves...

I just bought a ZR rain suit (including hat and gloves) and plan to play into November. I'm fortunate enough to have a heated driving range and some indoor facilities to go to.

I recently started the Wii Fit- hey, may sound hokey to the fitness enthusiasts out there, but for a couch potato like me, anything that gets me up and moving is a good thing. Plus it has opened my eyes to stretching, balance, and Yoga exercises. Don't discount their importance and the Winter is a great time to focus on these.

The living room carpet is about a 12 on the stimp meter. I just bought Dr. Farnsworth's book, The Putting Perscription. Should make for a good indoor practice routine for the cold months.

February, have a trip planned for Florida to play at The Bears Club and PGA. Then, when I get back, renew county membership card and handicap membership, and away we go!

I play year round come hell and high water here in Oregon.

Supposed to play in a tournament this weekend but we are projected to get up to 5" of rain between Friday and Saturday. Hard to believe but the best golf weather we had all year was last week 67 and sunny with 5 mph wind everyday for 5 days in a row.

Strap on the raingear and arm your self with patience.

Aww come on, it's definitely winter blues time for some of our friends who are really up north. But Jersey? come on! I'm in NY and still looking forward to a few more weeks of decent golf, who knows maybe even more. Mild days in december are not completely unheard of. Anyroads, next week's forecast is looking pretty nice - it's predicted to hit the 60s so its not time to be miserable yet.

I passed through the airport in Minneapolis today, now they have plenty to b**** about.
Oh, I agree with you completely Tenement... I'm planning on playing many more times before "hanging it up" for the Winter... but there are a bunch of people who have already put the sticks away for the year, so I figured it was a good time to start the thread.

Yes, this coming weekend looks like a total washout- but next week looks way better.

Right? What happened to fall? It has been in the 30s and 40's for two weeks and rained almost everyday. Looks like it is the range for me, *sigh*. At least they have heaters.

had some crazy weather last weekend out here in New England with snow! Looks like it will be getting cold again come tomorrow, but I am hoping to sneak a few more rounds in up until mid-December, snow permitting. After that it is heated bays at the driving range and purchasing a putting mat to throw in the basement. Every once in a while I'll tee up old balls outside and hit em into the woods behind my house...

Well I guess I can use this as my WTF the price of golf just doubled for me thread. Since the courses I was paying 40$ for all summer are now $100 plus to play and most are in crappy post overseed condition for another 3 weeks or so. Dang tourists stay home in the cold so we can have affordable winter golf here in Arizona J/K, but you would think with 300+ golf courses within 50 miles of here that there would be some competitive pricing going on. :russian_roulette:

I thought AZ might have residents rates or something, that if you show a local DL, rates are reduced over the "snowbirds" rate. If not I agree, it would suck to pay those winter rates all the time.

Of course I've got friends back here on the east coast that b**** every year when the courses go from winter rates of $40 or so back to the normal rates of $70 to $80. I just laugh and say, you complain about this every year, you know it's just a winter deal. Doesn't make a difference still gets them upset :)

Well there are a couple places that have local rates but most will still hoover in the $100 plus range for a high end track. TPC Champions you can walk for 43 that is the best deal in town. I was looking on golfnow for a round this weekend and even all the dog tracks are 40 to 60 bucks. I guess I wouldnt complain as much but the vast majority of the courses are cartpath only and are in mediocre shape with slow greens due to the overseed. Then again we do get another rate hike from jan to april when the real peak season starts.

What's with this stupid fall here in the northeast? Sunny on Wednesdays, rain all weekend!

A few of the guys I play with are true mudders. We'll play year round if the course is open. I'll pull out the heater, cart cover, winter gloves and all that other swing confiding stuff we are forced to tolerate due to the climate. I find the cold rounds are best played on foot though. It can be amazingly quiet on a golf course in the middle of winter. Anyone else on the course is usually some sort of a player. There are no slow rounds when the temperature gets cold!

I have two golf specific trips on the horizon. Vegas in December, and the annual Myrtlefest in March. I can tell you right now, that unless the weather around here cooperates, January and February are gonna bite!

During the dog days of winter, I do envy those of you who live in the warm climates. (hate them, but envy them)

We also have the official indoor ball whacking dome, which is just like real golf, only not nearly as fun.
