changing loft on a wedge

is it better to bend up or down, does it matter ?
quick question,

is it better to bend a wedge up or down ? like if i want a 51* does it matter if i have a 50 cahnged to a 51 vs having a 52 changed to a 51.

im sure bounce will be affected, like having a 50* with 8* bounce vs a 52 with like 10* bounce, will it will equall 9* either way ? but if say a 50 with 8* vs a 52 with 12*, if thats even made, would that be 9 from the 50 but 11 from the 52 ?

would bounce be the only other factor? or are there other things to consider ?

thanks
greg

Bounce is the main concern in my opinion. But, if the same loft and bounce can be achieved either way then there is one other thing to look at which is offset. If you reduce loft (and bounce) you will increase offset. If you add loft (and bounce) you will reduce offset. So, the ultimate answer (assuming loft and bounce are equal) is what the offset looks like and ultimately what you prefer. Hope that helps.

at what point does that start to happen? if I have a 48* vokey is there ANY way I could get it to 52*? or is about 50 the best I could do?

that should some it up if bounce and offset are the only things to worry about, im looking to get one more set of 3 wedges before the manufactures start changing the grooves, my mp-62 pw is 47 with 4* gaps down to the 5 iron, the 3 and 4 are on 3* gaps. im not sure weather to keep the 4* gaps through out the wedges which would end up being 51, 55, 59, which i think i would actually love, or if i should go with stock options like 50, 54, 58, or 52, 56, 60 or bend/stock combo like 50, 55, 60. i do like taking full swings with my wedges and i think the 51, 55, 59 would play great for me, as well as possibly 52, 57, 62.

i'm leaning towards 51, 55, 59 or 52, 57, 62. with the right grinds, i should be able to play any distance or shot type as long as i practice enough with either of these combos

i would definatly try to choose the closest option to the actual loft i want, keeping bounce and offset in mind. im looking at vokey spin milled, i dont know who makes what. heres :drinks: hoping the the vokeys are forged and not cast

Vokey wedges are cast and not forged. And as idrive mentions, there is a risk whenever you bend a club of snapping it. However, I have bent literally thousands of clubs and have not snapped one yet. I've known it to happen, but it is pretty rare. I wouldn't be overly concerned.

IMO, 4* loft change on a Vokey is very risky. I would caution you not to do it. Make sure it is done by someone with experience. I'd make you sign a waiver...

Don't get a loft/lie machine. Just take it to a shop that does this kind of work and leave it to a professional. Quality loft/lie machines are very expensive and the poor quality ones aren't worth bothering with. In other words, "don't try this at home". I'm not saying it's rocket science, because it's actually quite simple. But, no reason to shell out that kind of $$$ when it is pretty cheap to give it to a club maker.

I would agree. I bought a Mitchell a couple of years a go so that I could bend my own clubs. I don't bend anyone elses but my own.

I'll never come close to having it pay for itself.

Agreed. 4* is too much IMO.
If you're going to bend 4* on a wedge, you should probably just go to next club up. For example, if you want to bend 48* to 52* why don't you just pick up a wedge that is 52*? I know that most companies won't bend 4*.
because I bought a 48* to go with my AP2 irons when I had them. now I dont have them and have a 48* wedge lying around and I was just thinking about what I could do with it. I have no use for it anymore. (sorry for the inadvertent thread jack).

back on topic.
