Time to Replace the 588's

Fellas, I am going to replace my 588's. I carry a 56 and a 60. I want to stick with those lofts. I have always liked the looks of the 588's. I tried the Vokey's when they first came out. I liked them pretty well, since they looked nearly identical to the 588, but I liked the feel of the 588 better. I then had a set of TayloMade RAC's, they didn't stay in the bag long. Eventually, I went back to the 588 mainly because of the look and feel.

I always thought I liked the low bounce on the 60*, the 588 I have has 3* of bounce.

Well, I have been reading a little, and a lot of people seem to like the Scratch. According to their fitting system on line, which I do not have a tremendous amount of faith in, they recommend a Digger/Driver for me and the 60* has 14* of bounce. That is a little scary.

I haven't played much for 4 years until recently. Previous to the past four years, I played 5 or 6 days a week. So, I don't know much about these new wedges. 5 years ago, all of the tour players seem to play 588's. Now they are all over the board.

I have never really had the chance to play many different grinds. Here is where I am most confused. What grinds are going to work best for me? I guess I have to start by trial and error, but that may get expensive. I was surprised the online fitter recommended Digger/Driver. My divots are not real deep. My divots are long and thinner, but I by no means sweep the ball. I would say my full wedge divot is about six inches long and about 1/2 inch deep. I do not gouge it. I like to be able to open the face too. I mostly play on bermuda fairways as well, most of the time fairly firm, unless we have a lot of rain, like this week.

Any advice and preferences would be appreciated. It seems there are some good cast wedges now. I thought I would have to play forged, but I see guys like the Vokey Spin Milled and Scratch has a cast now too.

I'm in a similar boat, I've played two 588 53* wedges for about 15 years and am having trouble finding a replacement, not that I need one, but I would like a heavier head. I have a Vokey 52* that I really like in terms of how it lines up and the weight of the head, but it doesn't feel as nice as the BeCu 588 that it replaced. I may just go back to the 588 with some lead tape on it.

For my 60*, I went from 588 to 900 series to Vokey, but I think I will keep the Vokey in the bag, although I may try to trade or sell for another Vokey with less bounce - my 588 and 900 had around 3-4* of bounce in them, but my Vokey has 10* and I can't lay the face wide open on lobs like I could with the Clevelands. I never warmed up to the 900 series even after it was in my bag for 3-4 years.

The scratch wedges are very very nice. I just recently tried my first one also. I was playing the vokey SM also coming from the tour 900, the 588 and a CG12 along the way. The scratch for me is without question the most solid feeling of them all. I went the KBS tour x stiff black nickel shaft with the black finish wedge. The club is solid and looks sweet to boot. I am a 1.7 index currently and I too was fitted into the D/D. I felt the same way you did and did the fit a few times on the site. I decided to go with the one they recommended and I am glad I did. This club is money and I can hit flops, money out of the sand you name it I can hit it with this wedge. I will be replacing my 52 tour action 900 and 60 SM def before next season. Good luck..

I have been reading and reading, and it looks like I am going to get some Scratch 8026's. They look like fine wedges.

+1 for Scratch. I just ordered mine, as well as a set of AR-1 irons.

Ive played 588's for years also: 51* gap and 56/14 and 60/3. I recently got rid of the worn out 56* and the 51 and replaced those 2 with a 54* CG 12 with 12* bounce. I like having only a 54 and 60 now. Ill never get rid of the 60 with 3* bounce...love that club. Not sure about the scratch but I gave vokeys a try...didn't like the thicker topline or satin finish compared to the clevelands. The CG 12 wedges are still to be found on some golf store shelves . I paid $89 brand new. If you like the 588 look the CG 12 looks very similar.
