Fall Pictures

We played Stonelick Hills Golf Club today, November 1st, 2009. It was 34* when we teed off and 54* when we finished. We walked all 18 hole (as it was cart path only today), and the golf course was in great shape except that the fairways were super soggy from a hard rain a few nights ago. Fall rates of $45 now....Not a bad day for golf for November 1st in Ohio!

PS: IMO, This is the BEST public golf course in the Cincinnati area.

I lost my chance at Stonelick back in Sept due to work emergency. My understanding was that it was a rough day as some of the greens were aerated and sanded and others were not. However, I'll give it ago at some point. About 2 weeks later I also got rained out at Ivy Hills --- another bummer as I my not get to make that one up.

I got to play Maketewah a handfull of times this year. Traditions, Triple Crown, Griffen Gate (Lex, Ky), Cherry Blossum (Georgetown, Ky) were also on my play list this year. I played in Myrtle Beach and Chicago.

I played today (SW ont. 1/2 hour from detroit). It was 55 deg and sunny. Glorious Day.

I can't believe it's Nov 1st and I still think I have a few more rounds. Next saturday will be 55 and sunny.

Unfortunately; 1. I do not have a passport, and 2. I will be up in Michigan over Thanksgiving, maybe the weather will cooperate for a round the day after Thanksgiving?

As a canadian I have to take the day off work but if the weather is nice, I'll hop over to michigan for sure. My guess is it will be 34 degrees and freezing but who knows!

Loks like I am going to get stuck at 47 or 48 for the year. Not too bad considering I did not get any new courses in for Sept due to kids' soccer games and practice. I am happy with that though! Last year I hit 38 and the year before 34.

Getting tough here, because I have played all but 2 private courses here in Cincinnati. Good thing there is no shortage of courses up in Michigan!

I really like Stonelick Hills as well. Great course, excellent condition. I too have played them all around here.
Most disappointing: Aston Oaks. Highly ranked as a public course by Golfweek and Golf Magazine, but I must have hit it at a bad time last year--conditioning was pretty bad, so I was disappointed.
For architecture, Shaker is still my favorite, despite some relatively poor conditions lately. Every hole has a distinct personality.
Weatherwax is a great value. Beavercreek was excellent. Hueston Woods is great also. Yankee Trace is a very nice course. Used to play at Heatherwoode a lot.

For private courses, Moraine Country Club, NCR, Coldstream, are my tops around here if you can get on. I liked Brown's Run, so much I joined about 10 years ago, and love its greens and fairways.

I have a local bucket list I'm trying to hit. Not sure if there is a thread on here, but if anyone has a bucket list and wants to get on courses, we should compile a reference/contact list.

I can get us on Brown's Run if it is on your bucket list and you have not played it. You have to pay guest fees ($75, includes a cart), but at least I can get us on there any time.

Where is stone lick hills located? I have heard a lot of great things about it? Anyone ever play Traditions in Northern Kentucky, and if so what are your thoughts?

This looks like a great track - Only place I have played IN the area of Cinci is Aston Oaks - nice course, but very poorly maintained!
I know what I will try the next time I am down there!

Stonelick is one of the few "survivors" of the double whammy that most of the Cincinnati area public access courses have experienced. It's likely been the most challenging stretch of weather and economic times that many local GMs and Superintendents have faced in their careers. Stonelick is one of my group's top three in the region. Longaberger is too far a trek for a typical Saturday morning round.


Stonelick is as good as it gets for public access in the southern Ohio area. There are other layouts that can challenge Stonelick for enjoyment and quality, but when it comes to conditioning, Stonelick stood head and shoulders above many other area courses. Among our regular rotation, only Yankee Trace and a few others were able to maintain a reasonable level of course conditioning given the circumstances. The course eases you into the round, then hits you hard at the end. It's a tough layout and requires quite a bit of local knowledge, but rewards solid driving.

My group will probably open the season at Stonelick this year and will probably make at least three trips out to the east side if they can maintain the kinds of playing surfaces that we hope to see week in and out. It's a well-managed facility with a great range and a great post-round gathering area.
