Drills to help stop casting(throwing it from the top).

Need help with casting. I throw it from the top often, kills clubhead speed big time.

I have a great drill you can work with. Get book and hold the from the bottom side, like a golf grip. Swing the book to the top, just as if you had a golf club in your hands. However, once you reach the top of the swing, don't let any part of the book touch your right wrist, but instead have it touch your left forearm. Start your transition to the downswing and keep the book in the same place. You shouldn't feel any casting motion at all. Do this over and over slowly and then try the same feeling by putting the club back in your hands. Good Luck!

Have mentioned this drill a couple of times before but it is very effective and simple. Place a small peice of wood (or a towel works as well) on the ground about 2-3 inches behind ball. Hit a few shots making sure you dont hit the wood (towel). This forces you to achieve some lag and down c o c k on downswing and forces the hands to lead.

I find these drills more effective than working on individual positions. I have a few more good ones so PM me if they are of any interest. good luck

Instead of wood (which the OP will probably strike 10 times out of 10...potentially damaging himself or his club and making a lot of noise, one trick is the use the low side of a plastic ball tray from a driving range...that way you'll be able to tell when you make contact with it, but you'll still hit the ball and won't hurt yourself or the club. And the thing won't move...see this pic attached to make it clear what I mean.

An oldie but goodie - hit balls with your feet smack together, if you throw or cast it you will probably lose your balance something horrible.

what about the classic finger gun from 5 lessons. Make a gun with your right hand (assuming you play righty) after you take your grip by extending your forefinger and thumb so that they are no longer on the club. Then hit a bunch o f half to 3/4 shots while keeping this grip.

+1 on the finger gun drill. I've been using that recently and really like it. I feel the clubface going more open at the top than I am used to and dropping vertically in transition.

Another good one is to hit an impact bag. I've been working on reducing casting myself and find that I naturally have a lot more lag when hitting the bag. It's the same thing when taking practice swings - lots lag, nice swing, etc... (as viewed on video). The problem is the clubface is wide open through the impact area when taking practice swings. So I am casting to square the clubface when hitting a ball. The bag will tell you whether or not you have a square clubface and your old casting habits don't creep in nearly as much as when you try to hit a ball (at least that is the case for me). Then you can take the feel of hitting the bag to work on reducing casting when hitting balls.

I used to play whole rounds with my feet together, 00, and still casted.

After 45 years, I still cast! It comes and goes, and miffs me to no end. Had me sniffing around for new ways to fix old bad habits, and found the thread. Lots of golden nuggets of wisdom from folks that have been on this site forever!
