D3 disappointment

Clark

Recommended Posts

I had played for a D3 golf team in the North East, not including me the next best 3 players were mid to high 80's and the cut line for the team was 95. I had been told that the program was serious and competitive. Allow me to tell you what practice composed of.

Once a month mandatory Friday afternoon practice which includes an hour at the gym and a short conference.

Practices were an "e-mail" of what you've done and for how long.

I understand that golf is something most people do on their own, but D3 golf is a joke... Only plus side was the semi decent golf tee, free membership to a club and free tourneys...

I don't know whether or not I am going to play next year, seems that I'd do better playing the weekly tournaments at the club or golf association...

You can't generalize about D3 golf like that. Many schools have serious teams. My son looked at McDaniel College for example and everyone on the team shoots from low 70's to low 80's. Extensive daily practices fall and spring. Etc.

Depends where you are, too. My cousin went down to Florida to play for a D3 school. Very competitive, very good group of players. I was going to play for my college before I ended up transfering out, but they take it very seriously (even though most of the guys aren't very good) and the goal is to improve the teams golf game. They also got a 60% discount off of Titleist equipment, which now looking back on it, makes me wonder if that discount included SC stuff and if they would be able to find me a pro platinum that has been un-molested.

Right now I'm at a community college (financial reasons lead me to transfer out of my 4 year college :() and I think I will probably transfer back to my old college once I've got my Associate's Degree. My favorite teacher is there, my friends are there and they have a golf team that I could definitely get on and do well.

Some DIII schools are quite legit. Look no further than schools like Methodist and Ogelthorpe, who would put a hurting on a lot of DI schools.

If you want to play for a real team, take your results and your transcript and get in contact with some other coaches.

You do have to look around..golf is not a well funded program at most schools.

D3 programs I am aware of are Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA, Berry College in Rome GA (moved from NAIA), and LaGrange College in LaGrange GA...their traveling players post scores in the 72-78 range with team scores 290-310.

I really think you are misinformed about DIII golf. Did you not check the scores of the team before you decided to play there? It's pretty easy to do using either the school's website of golfstat.com. There are some hot spots for DIII: the Southeast, Texas, and Southern California. Try looking at schools in those areas and you will find teams that shoot around par a lot of the time.

I played DIII golf for 3 years at a school in Wisconsin and I can tell you that is very competitive. Yes, there are some teams out there that simply can't compete. However, DIII golf is very competitive. In fact, there is really no difference between the good DIII teams and good DII teams. The tryout at my school was 55-60 guys every year competing for 6 or 7 spots. Our top guys would shoot upper 60's to low 70's in practice and usually shot right around 300 in most tournaments. Sounds to me like you just went to a school where golf is not taken very seriously, not funded very well, or simply has a poor coach who doesn't put in any time.

Ezgolfer and Glfmn,

I too was confused - genuinely believing that it was a discussion about a swingweight of D3. Living in the UK (this forum is read all over the world) we have absolutely no idea what D3 golf is! None whatsoever. Golf is largely passed over here at both school and university.

Avid students of golf (like me) read EVERYTHING about golf and it's very frustrating not being able to understand what is being said.

Where terms are only understood in your own country then explaining those terms in a preamble would be greatly appreciated. And, you Swedish plonkers who post on www.incepta.ca in Swedish please try and be more sociable.

I played DIII back in the early 1980s in Michigan. We had three good players, which at the time meant that we all shot in the 70s, and three guys who couldn't break 90.........I played 3 years at that school, was 5th, 1st, and 2nd in those three years in my conference, got to play in the DIII national championship that one year. What amazes me now is how good DIII is in general, to win the conference I played in, I would have to average shooting about 4-6 shots lower than I did back in the day...

It seems to me that it being in the Collegiate Golf Talk Forum should have provided some clarification. No?

Wesley college in dover DE is pretty serious as well all starters shoot in the 70s to qualify to start b squad all 80s. madatory practices 6 days a week. Ever try to two put a down the hill 40 foot putt. After running sprints in golf shoes because you 3 putted it. and everyone had to run because of you. Pressure is great.

I played DIII a few years ago, and my school played in the same conference as Methodist. They compete against DI schools most of the year, the only legit DIII tournament they played in all year was in our conference championship, where they're players went 1-2-3 if I remember right.

My school had very promising players before we got to tournaments, but unfortunately it was better for us to play with my broken knuckle than have our 6th man play in the tournament (which sadly ruined my stroke avg and about every other stat in the last two events). But we still practised every single day, had competitive practise, and access to an amazing golf course that they kept in great condition.

Shouldn't be knocking DIII golf, just complain about your own school specifically. Look at transferring (and look at who the top 30-40 schools are if you want more competitiveness) and you might enjoy it more if your there just for the golf.

I played DIII in Michigan in the 90s and we had a range from guys would shoot low 70s to mid 80s. It is the nature of D3 Sports - no scholarships.

Enjoy the free golf and the tournaments - and just enjoy college.

I currently play at a DIII, and I also agree that you can't generalize like that. Our team practices every day of every week during season. Our tournaments are won with low 70's or high 60's. There are crazy good players in DIII. Just because they didn't choose to go D1 doesn't mean much. Performance is everything. A lot of people go to DIII for a great education, and if their golf develops enough they can go on to play at a D1 after two years. Just a matter of preference.

I live in CT and I'm a senior. I checked out some schools for golf around here and noticed what you experienced. Then look at a school like Methodist that is usually top in D III and would give plenty of D I schools problems. Maybe look around and think about transferring.
