Putter Company Stigmas/Stereotypes

elchene

Recommended Posts

What do you think of when a particular putter company is mentioned?
There are so many putter companies out there, but what makes each one different?

For example,
When someone says Odyssey, I think of inserts, machine-like precision, etc.
When someone says TP Mills, I think of classic designs, soft feel

What do you guys think of? I'm especially interested in custom putter companies/makers like Piretti, Palombi, Bettinardi, Tad Moore, Byron Morgan, etc... and what makes each one special.

T.P. Mills = Tradition, history, hand crafted goodness

Byron Morgan = Amazing Customer Service, 1 man shop

Bettinardi = Perfection, highly tuned milling

C & L = Haven't really looked into this company but Custom stamping comes to mind

Machine = Unlimited Customization

Nike = Not the best putter maker... The method looks promising though

Odyssey = Inserts

Piretti = Looks like a good brand. Haven't putter with one yet...

Ping = Tradition, One of the most historic brands out there

Rife = Grooves

Rossa (Taylormade) = ASGI inserts, Strange shapes

Scotty Cameron = The best marketer out there... Makes a good product but not the best in the PR dept...

SeeMore = Payne S.

Slighter = One man shop. Garage is amazing

Tad Moore = Inserts

Wilson = 8802, blade

Nead, Mannkrafted, Lajosi = Customization, Works with you on your putter

Cameron - Marketing, Cost-cutting, mass production, overrated

Bettinardi - Most technologically advanced CNC milling facility with tightest tolerance in the pursuit of perfection

Byron - High-quality milled customization, personalization, and attention as if you were a touring pro, but you just pay off-the-rack prices, and his standard models have just a nice flow of lines and design onto it

I think America is a great place that gives everyone a chance to chase their dreams.
I see lots of these gentleman/companies doing something they love. They all probably have different desires in how big they want to become. Some want to remain 1 man operations. Some want to grow their ideas and brands so big that they become attractive to an oem to contract with them.
I am a Cameron fan, been a fan before he signed with Titleist. I think I see a man that chased his dream and achieved it.
He is working with many of the top players in the worlds, his company is selling lots of putters and the success has given him the ability to build a putter studio with all the toys he could want. Obviously the downside to success is the naysayers but I guess it comes with the territory

Opinions can evolve over time. There was a time that I wouldn't own a John Byron putter. They just didn't look "right" to me.

After I played golf with a good friend in Florida that was putting lights out with his 006, I tried it on the green. Excellent feel and amazing twilight zone milled face. Much better than some of the older John Byron models.

Since then, I've owned and sold a JB02 and now have a prized Designed by Captain Morgan. Byron's take on the 8802 has some very unique refinements and the Mystic Pearl finish is beautiful.

Here are the first things that come to mind when I think of these companies....

Ping = History - anser
T.P. Mills = craftsmanship and history
Cameron = Marketing and Branding
Byron Morgan = little of everything you want - customization, quality, service, etc.
Bettinardi = high precision CNC milling
Machine = interchangeability
Nike = willing to try some things but still trying to get there - loads of potential popularity just from their name
Odyssey = Inserts, inserts, inserts - and I don't like inserts.
Rife = Groove technology and infomercials
Taylormade = Spider
SeeMore = alignment
Wilson = 8802

Slighter, Piretti, Palombi, Nead, Mannkrafted, C&L, etc - individual customization

Yes I'm aware... but the marketing material says "Established in 1962"... not that it would be thirty odd years later before there is a named company. Just part of the illusion I guess.
