Austin Texas - what to play ?

staying a week in Austin, what shall i play ?

Hi golfers.

In the late january im staying a week in Austin. I want to play all the golf i can fit into my plan. Im not after the exclusive courses, but looking for good value for money. Where shall I go ?

Depends on how much you want to spend. We have some excellent municipal courses for as little as 20 a round, and then we have the resorts that can run as much as 100. Go to golf512.com and you can take a look. They have some nice discounts on the site too.

I recommend the Clay/Kizer complex in South Austin. Both are munis, both are as tough as you want them to be and both are cheeeeep. Best bang for the buck in town. Pine Forest out in Bastrop (30mi east of the airport) is great too. In the 40-50 range you have Shadow Glen, Onion Creek, and Terravista, and your premium joints like Wolfdancer run about 70 during the week. Golf is good here and relatively cheap, depending on where you are from. Bring your wind game though, and it has been cold and rainy all winter here. This town is good for the single golfer too. Lots of open tee times, even on weekends.

That sounds super. I guess I will play the Clay/Kizer, that sounds like something from me. Dont worry about the weather, Im from Denmark.... where everything is deepfrozen atm, so the Texas weather will be wonderful :-)....

don't forget about historic Lion's Municipal, course is always in decent shape, although be prepared for 4+ hour rounds (maybe not during the time that you're here). number 16 (Hogan Hole) is a beauty. its very close to downtown.

Morris Williams is another muni that in great shape and a bit more challenging.

both of these are very affordable.

others that come to mind include Star Ranch, Avery Ranch, and Wolfdancer (toward bastrop). i've played all of these except Wolfdancer, i'll be playing a tournament there on 01/18 (brrr).

Look at going to Blackhawk. You'll like it, it's just as close as Pine Forest, and less target golf. I like Pine Forest, but I like Blackhawk better.

Bluebonnet Hill is also pretty fun, reasonable cost, not to hard to get on there.

Forest Creek in Round Rock is very nice, interesting layout.

I am going to echo a couple of other posters. I grew up in Bastrop and Pine Forrest was my "home" course. Great track but difficult. Tight fairways, small greens and elevation changes.

Wolfdancer is also a must play. I get out there 3-4 times a month and don't get tired of it but make sure you bring your A game because it can bite you in the arse if you don't.

There are plenty of good courses in the area.

Falconhead comes to mind as a pretty good but challenging track as well.

I would recommend Bluebonnet and Morris Williams. If you want a challenge, park and play Hancock. Its a 9 hole course with sketchy fairways, but the greens are taken care of. There's no warm up range area just one for putting. It is the ultimate make or break course when money is on the line!

Shadowglen is tough and cheap..www.golf512.com ..very undulated tiered greens but still a fun layout.
Kizer is more fun/better shape than Clay IMO.
Star Ranch is really fun as is Tera Vista..both very open layouts..both good shape
I liked Colo Vista in Bastrop...is it still there?

Sadly Colo Vista is gone (unless you have $16 mil laying around). that elevated par 3 on the back nine was one of the most beautiful holes in central Tx, IMHO.

hey, what about Butler pitch and putt in the center of town, gotta give that one a try. just take a wedge and putter, great way to work on your short game. just watch out for the bums, they can be nasty.

Colo Vista is gone...that is sad to hear. Very fun layout and two very different 9's. I agree that par 3 overlooking the river was great.

Having a bit of 1st hand knowledge, I can say that it is for sale for quite a bit less than the figure you mentioned.

I really enjoyed playing Colo when I was younger. It was a great track and the par 3 15th elevated hole you are talking about certainly is one of the best par 3's in texas.

If Colo Vista was closer to a bigger city, it would get more recognition
