Hypocrisy and the Golf Channel...Perfect Together

Rudders

Recommended Posts

Just watched a John Feinstein piece on the Golf Channel's Pre-Game show. Basically, it was about watching golf for the enjoyment of watching golf. What new stories will be coming out in 2010; how will Phil handle turning 40, will Rory McIlroy, Ryo Ishikawa, and Rickie Fowler continue their great play, how 50% of viewers don't need Tiger contending to watch golf. The gist: Tiger shouldn't be the story; the story is the game. End of piece.

Now, can you guess who is shown in the first 2 images are come right after the piece? You get three guesses and the first two don't count.

What idiot did that editing? It was like Emily Litella (Gilda Radner) on the old SNL saying, "Never Mind."

How about Sticker flaring one out right from the rough and the commentator saying "that could be from the new grooves" after they have him on saying he has played legal grooves for the last 4 years on his irons.

Anyone know why Strickers 755 are conforming and they dont conform on the usga list?

Well to be fair they did say he had about 100 yards ( i believe) and he did say that his 53 and 59 are new groves. You're probably right that the groves had nothing to do with that hanger, but i think he likely hit it with a New rule wedge.

To the OP the whole time Fienstein was talking a subliminal still image of Tiger holding a "Watch this Tournament PLEASE" sign flashed every 14 seconds. I missed the sequence you're talking about but i can imagine John is non too happy about it either. "WTF?! seriously!" Without Tiger, He was going to write a book called "A season on the Brink" but then, Oh yeah. Damn.

They just make a special set with conforming grooves...Nike is doing the same thing.

Lately I've only watched TGC when it's a Playing Lessions With the Pros episode, or a European Tour event.

Great golf, great personalities, dry witty commentary, and no constant bombardment of Tiger this, Tiger that.

But he said hes is playing the same set this year as the last 4 years. So do the 755's with the black badge have conforming grooves? Because its not listed on the usga website.

You are taking his comments too literally..the companies sent various fresh sets (some off list) with milled V Grooves into the USGA to have them OK'd...it makes no difference what model head as long as the dies were still available...they just made fresh sets for the players who requested them....Tiger played the end of 2009 with irons that are not on any list...The companies aren't into the V Grooved thing for the mass market as they apply only to tour players and a scattered number of amateurs. True that a few companies have V Grooved available retail...Titleist, Mizuno, TaylorMade come to mind.
Pro golf is much like Nascar where most clubs are special made for them...it's been that way for as long as I can remember. Before each event the PGA Tour checks grooves...nobody can "get away" with using illegal grooves.

Hmmm...50% don't need Tiger to watch golf.

A 50% drop in viewership is not cause for concern?

pretty sure he had a much longer distance, because i remember thinking same thing as previous poster that it was funny he says conforming grooves then they say must have been new grooves fault. I replayed it on my pvr a few times just to watch, and i could be wrong myself but i am pretty sure it was a longer distance. I think the 100 yards you refer to was what he had left after the miss, not the shot itself...but i could be wrong too.

ps...anyone else get completely nauseous over the groove implementation and golfchannel talking incessantly about it over and over..at each and every chance they could. If any player so much as hit a slightly wayward shot..they would mumble..hmm? could be the new grooves?
Or they would say..oops..that sounded fat..or chunky..or whatever..and the ball would land and spin nice right beside the hole...they cannot even guess based on sound what the player did or not.

I love the commentary on the Euro Tour much better. Especially on bad shots.

Agreed. I can barely stomach listening to Faldo and Tilghman trying to "sell the drama". I watch TGC when 1)European Tour is on 2)PGA Tour is on (and only for a while, never start to finish) and 3)Pre and Post-Round with Nobilo and Chamblee. These guys are good, IMHO.
