I'm sick to my stomach

Deciding this year would be the year for new fairway woods I picked up an 18* Adams 9033F head of ebay for a pretty good price and had it shipped to my office. I knew that I would be traveling a lot and didn't want it sitting at my front door for days on end. I arrived in the office on Thursday expecting to see the box sitting on my desk. after asking around about my missing package I begin the real investigation of tracking down my lost club head. It was delivered on Monday the same time I was currently flying out of town. one of my coworkers signed for it and decided to not leave it on my desk because it was apparently "too cluttered" and left it with most of the delivered packages. on Tuesday the delivery area is cleaned up of empty boxes and the boxes are taken to recycling. after finding this out I go dumpster diving for my club as a small box with only a fairway wood head in it could easily be mistaken for an empty box. after an hour of sifting through old boxes I find out that the recycling and main dumpsters were emptied earlier and no one else had seen the package. now I'm out the cost of the head, the head itself, and have no recourse.

I've had over a dozen clubs shipped to my office with no problems, the first one without a shaft attached gets thrown away. :russian_roulette:

OH
MY
GOD

That sucks so bad. Is there anyway to have that coworker fired? Shot?

I would probably not handle that well at all. I'd always have this little voice in my head everytime I saw that person. "You *&%# " Try not to do that. But, you should throw away their car keys imo.

It almost sounds as if a PO box for personal packages might be the way to go for the future.

But, good for your concientious co-worker that he took the time to inspect and sign for the package on the delivery dock, walk back to your desk, make that complicated risk assessment of the amount of desk clutter involved and mentally compare it to the clutter status of the delivery dock, make a decision based upon your best interests, and then take the time to retrace his steps and return all the way back to the delivery dock so he could safely place your personal package amongst the company trash, thereby saving it from your frightening desk.
Sounds to me like your signee owes you some $$.
Agreed. In fact, it's hard to fathom that he hasn't offered to pay for it. If I were in that situation, I would have been pretty quick to make that offer, and I think most people are the same way.

In fact, the combination of returning it to a junk area and not offering to pay has me wondering - is it possible they're playing a practical joke on you? It doesn't make much sense outside of that.

This strikes a nerve. Im sorry but your co-worker is an idiot. What on earth was he thinking? I could care less if my office had sh!t from floor to ceiling... FIND A WAY TO GET IT IN THERE! This simple task was over thought and a huge mistake on his part.

Like someone above said "throw his keys in the trash!" LOL

Everyone at my job is so used to me getting packages that they hide them. I got mad after the last time when I almost questioned a wrx member after a week of no package. Turns out they hid it and forgot about it. I've now made it clear that they are responsible for the packages if they screw them up. And my packages are now easier to find, right where they should be.

WAIT a minute .....

First off: Are you the supervisor or owner of this business? Are you a manager?

If not, then I'm not sure how "wise" it was on your part to have a package sent to "your office" in the first place. If you're simply an employee there, then I wouldn't have allowed that in the first place. Employees have no "pecking order" amongst other employees. Supervisors usually are given more consideration in these types of situations.

Also, you should have made arrangements for all of the possible scenarios that could have played out after you "left". I mean ... If I have a shipment planned, I am there to receive it or else I make SPECIFIC arrangements for it's arrival.

Blaming this on the employee who took in the package is only partially correct. You are the one who scheduled or allowed it to be delivered in your absence.

I too am sorry for your loss, but to place the blame entirely on someone else just isn't correct.

I disagree. What's being requested literally could not be any easier or any less effort. Just put a small box in the person's office. There's no imposition or difficulty with this task, and anybody should be able to do it.

Im sorry, but I am actually not the OP I was just stating my opinion on the matter.

I get what you are saying but my guess is the OP has done this before and never had a problem and assuming his superiors are ok with shipping personal items to his office (if he isn't one himself). Obviously we can't put the blame 100% on this "Co-worker" but he was 90% of the problem.

Sounds like someone at your office shouldn't sign for packages unless they are willing to undertake the responsibility that is inherently involved.

The person who signed for the package is responsible...period. If they can't find it, they owe you the money for the head.

Simple as that.

Why is it not 100% on the signee? He didn't 90% fail to put the package in the OP's office, he failed altogether. How difficult is it to, if you take the initiative to sign for someone else's package, simply put the package in the OP's office? Otherwise, don't sign for it and the OP could have picked it up himself later. The signature puts the liability of the package squarely on the person who signed.

How does contents insurance work in the US?

Here in NZ the club head would be covered as soon as it was signed for by my insurance as I have "anywhere in NZ cover" for personal effects which would include this.

If it's the same there you could try claiming - of course the excess and value needs to be worth it. Failing that as others have said I'd be getting the signee to pay up.

I wonder how an idiot like your coworker actually still has a job when so many others are unemployed.

I don't know how you paid for the item, some credit card offers replacement guaranty which covers stolen or some other events that the item is lost. I think that might be the ONLY recovery you can try, but I don't know if ebay is covered.

Personal packages shouldn't be allowed to interupt the work environment, and this clearly went too far -- even with golf equipment involved. Sounds as if it got personal, too, and there's definitely going to be some residual acrimony. Perhaps a "Jet Blue" for everyone involved would end this whole thing and refocus everyone on the business at hand. (Jet Blue = written warning that the person is scheduled to fly out in a hurry if they don't straighten up!)

The fact that there's such a huge volume of trash in a traveled delivery area (or desk) that no one knows whether there's anything of value in it or not... defies imagination, and several safety and fire regulations.

Because the OP had it sent to his work. How hard is that to understand?
Once he made the choice on where it was to be shipped he has a little responsibility to be there to except it...Right?
It was also the fault (Majority) of the moron employee for making this a difficult situtation for the OP. Had he used any common sense this wouldn't be an issue.

It sucks that this happened. It's just unfortunate. But the solution is not to fault the signer or anyone else for that matter. As soon as you brought a personal situation to the workplace it is 100% on you to see it through with all coworkers that can potentially be involved. Caring your golf club is not in their job description. Had it been some paperwork, or a book, or some other innocuous item sent, they would have treated the package the same way and with what sounds like a little carelessness in the delivery area, these kinds of things can happen.

Just be glad it wasn't something really expensive.

No, he doesn't have any responsibility until he is asked for a signature himself. That's the point of getting a signature in the first place. If the employee didn't want to accept responsibility he should have declined signature and the OP could have picked it up later. Until the OP gets a chance to sign for himself, then people shouldn't sign for his package, or at least they should get the package do him properly if they do sign.
