Guys even though I'm not going I can't stay away from this Thread.

I have a question for the Michiganders:

Planning a family golf trip somewhere out there - Friday - Sun. My Uncle who has golfed all over suggested Tullymore and St. Ives.

Looks great but I'm wondering who has played it. He rented a 6000ft2 home with a walkout basement, pool, pool table, ....

pretty excited to go.

18 Friday upon arrival, 36 on Sat, 18 on Sunday then drive home!
[/quote]

I have played it a dozen times. Tullymore is a much better layout than St. Ives. The rates have gotten way to high though..not worth it anymore in my opinion. They have now put roads and condos/houses in between all the holes; it has kind of taken away from the scenery. I would advise playing Pilgrim's Run in Pierson..20 minutes away..equivalent course to Tully and a lot cheaper. Enjoy the trip!

I respectfully disagree with ODBALL.....opps.... I mean odshot!!!!

I think both St Ives and Tullymore are outstanding courses...... St Ives came first a few years before Tullymore, and it actually doesn't have very many houses around the course..... it is more of a Traditional course with that North Michigan flare. Mature large trees and you feel like you are in the middle of the forest.

Tullymore is a Jim Engh course....in my opinion he is builds some awesome courses, the best modern day designer out there. It has a more of a scottish flare with some wooded holes also. Conditions will be fantastic at Tullymore with a brand new state of the art clubhouse.

I definitely agree with odshot that the prices have gone way to high for those courses compared to other deals around. But if your uncle has rented a nice house like that, you will not be disappointed at all with either of these courses.

And odshot is correct, if you have time go play Pilgrims Run, it is another mid michigan course that equals the up north gems at a fraction of the prices.

Odshot..... you and openwater best get to practicing....... the south is coming and will rise again!!!!

st ives is a goofy layout...you hit a lot of blind approach shots to elevated greens..don't care for it personally. tullymore from the tips is a beaut. Great layout. A year ago they added another set of tees (we call them tiger tees) thats a true test of golf..lots of hybrids even a fairway wood into par 4s. Its no cow pasture! I would play Tullymore for 36 on Saturday; play Pilgrims on Friday for twilight on the way there..(thats a steal). you won't be disappointed at all. Just hard for some of us that played it 10 years ago when it was completely free of roads and condos versus where its at now..don't get me wrong though its still nice. The new clubhouse at Tullymore is great.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, so I get this email from my Aunt like 10 mins ago, and she tells me that there is a forest fire in Roscommon and that Forest Dunes is closed because of it…...........what?

What are the odds? Is this closure going to carry on into the weekend? I don't have cable at my apartment, is this is a big fire ? What is up here?

I called Jeff, left a voicemail. Hopefully he has some good news, because this is craziness. We don't live in SoCal.

Good luck to all this weekend. Bad news is I cannot attend and it's killing me. Good news is my work conference has moved to Vegas!!!!

Have a great few rounds guys.

(My moneys on odshot and his assortment of fancy clubs and his 2 handicap!)

(Jeff says the 2 might be a bit sandbaggerish as well!!!!!!)

I'm not sure exactly how close the fire got to Forest Dunes, rumors are within 1 mile. The staff and guests were evacuated at 4:30 pm on Tuesday. Awaiting the ok from the Crawford County Emergency Director to reopen.

Took a phone call from head pro while typing this, he snuck in and can see a flare up{smoke only no flames} from the pro shop. Makes it 50/50 to be open tomorrow. I'm confident we will be playing by Sunday. He expects an update from the emergency director around 2:00. I'll update here or by e-mail. Updates will be posted on the FD website also. He also confirmed the fire jumped the AuSable and got within 1 mile!

Told me it's officially a federal emergency SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO load up a C130 with like a bazillion gallons and put this thing out!!!! We got golf to play!

Kev,

Have a great time in Vegas. Bill gets fridays off and I can get a "hall pass". Pick one and we can all meet somewhere kinda central, say Eagle Eye in E. Lansing?

openwater,

Hopefully I won't run into any traffic hassles tomorrow due to this - and I hope you guys get your afternoon round in!

I'll give you a buzz in the early afternoon on my ETA - thanks again for the planning, organization, updates, and most of all, the opportunity! A bummer the couple guys that had originally planned on coming will have to miss it - I hope to meet you both sometime in the future!

Cheers,
Kev

Great meeting all of you guys yesterday. I think we all had a good time, and the course is just an absolute joy to play, as always -- even when I'm spraying it god knows where off the tee. Big thanks again to Jeff for setting it up, and for the tee gifts and generally great hospitality. You are a lucky man to have that beautiful track in your back yard. I would kill just to have that practice area near me!

If any of you are in town around Detroit, drop me a line if you're looking to play.

First, thanks again to Jeff for setting everything up. Upon arriving I was greeted immediately by staff, who were all excellent from start to finish. The gift bag at check in was great, my dad loves money clips and I love bag tags, lol. My 2 friends that I brought had an excellent time, loved the course, the atmosphere, etc.

The course itself, wow, what can I say. When you first get to the clubhouse and then out to the course, it is visually intimidating, but the head pro mentioned at check in that it was very fair. And he wad dead on, if you are hitting it well off the tee and can adjust to the speed of the greens, you can score. It's definitely a fun track to play, which isn't the case at some of these grandiose venues. The greens were amazing, probably the fastest and truest I'll putt on this year. I can't imagine them being faster, but we were told they could be and that blew my mind.

The course was in beautiful shape, I didn't lose one ball, but it's that kind of place. The fairways were excellent, I hit a lot of great approach shots because of this, were as you won't at lesser golf courses because of the poor conditions. The hazards were fair, I only had to hit out of one greenside bunker, and three fairway bunkers and everytime was as fair of a result ad you could get. Black Forest in Gaylord uses thick, sandbox sand and it's a joke there, you're better off declaring it unplayable.

Yesterday was as perfect of a day you could ask for, 87 degrees, great course, great food, great people. And I had said before that I refuse to play in the rain, I take that back. I would definitely play in the rain if it would lessen the effect of gnats and horseflys that bombarded me all day, which is something that would drive me away from any other course, except forest dunes. If anyone complains about the bugs before mentioning all the great things about the course, you obviously don't have an eye for a great course.

It was nice meeting everyone yesterday, and hope to run into you guys at some point down the road.

This weekend was AWESOME!!! Top notch all the way, from the house on #7, to the reception at the pro shop, to the goodie bags, to the practice area (loved that), to lunch, and everything in between.......and that course was just absolutely ridiculous (in a good way). I really enjoyed walking the first 18 with Bill and Josh, because you really get a feel for the track. I only wish I brought a sand game with me, because sadly, I spent way too much time in there. My 6-iron also paid the price in one of the waste bunkers, in the form of a rock the size of a golf ball that was located just underneath it. black%20eye.gif Definitely glad I put the Pings into play and left the Mizzies in the car!! LOL!

We definitely need to do this again! KG, no excuses this time!
