Heavyweight FW shafts

Oban, Ozik, etc..
Has anyone played the Revenge 8 in a fairway wood? I am looking for a heavyweight 3 wood shaft in the 85-90 gram range.. If so, how does it compare to other premium shafts such as the Code 8 or 8M2? Thanks!

Fuji ZCom Pro 95 should be in this discussion.

Revenge 8 is a great shaft. I didn't like it anymore than any of these other shafts. 8M2, Pro95, WB 83 all have tighter dispersion than the Revenge and other shafts listed here.

I hope this helps

I'd play the PYPE, Projext X-8A4, and Accra XE80 M5 before any of the shafts listed.

While these shafts are below 85-90g range when cut, they all perform quite well in FWs.

Personally, I go 100g+ in FWs and hybrids

Thanks for the replies! Stage, you are more of a man than I am, and any of those shafts are a little more than I could handle. I have thought about the 8M2 quite a bit and probably think it might be a frontrunner.. How does it compare to the Axivcore Red 89 or my Epic FW?

The Pro 95 was mentioned, I remember hearing about this shaft. I know it was discontinued, but how does it compare? Low launch/spin?

I really like the HD9 Black Tie and the Devotion 8 for heavier fairway woods shafts. The HD9 launches lower than the Devotion, which in turn is lower launching than the Revenge from what I have been told. Tight dispersion from both of them, I think that the HD9 spins less and plays a little stiffer to flex than the Devotion. I have played the Code 8 and 8M2 from Ozik before, both were solid, the 8M2 spun less and launched lower than the Code. I also played a Diamana Red Board 83 and Blue Board 83 in fairways and much preferred the Blue versus the Red, tighter dispersion and a more penetrating ball flight.

How are the 8M2 and the HD9 different? They both seem right in the range I'm looking at, and I know they are both very smooth.

Weight for one thing, the HD9 is in the mid 90 gram range while the HM2 is in the 87-89 gram range. The HD9 has the new Hexadecagon internal platform that provides added strength to the butt and tip sections of the shaft without adding weight. I feel that the HD9 is a bit more stable at impact than the 8M2 (although both are great). I also see a little lower ball flight and spin rate with the HD9.

Thanks, PGA! I figure both will lose a few grams when tipped for a 3 wood, and they are both about where I want.. I just fear that the HD9 might be a little too boardy - I generally like some boardiness. The 8M2 is easier to get for a decent deal though, and you say it has a little more launch/spin - it might be the one for me.

I really liked the way that the 8M2 performed in the Bridgestone J33 3 wood head, great feel and a very solid flight. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone, in fact probably going to dig mine back out and put it in the Pro Black when it finally comes out.

Thanks for the advice Pro, I will definitely be on the lookout for one!

Here's a question - when you tip a shaft an inch (let's say the 8M2), how many CPMs are added? Ballpark figures work too!

Depends on the head weight, that is why you tip trim most 46" wood shafts for a fairway. A typical driver head weight is in the 190-200 gram range while most steel 3 wood heads are 210-220, you need to stiffen the shaft a bit to offset the heavier head. If I recall, you are going to add around 8-12 cycles by taking an inch off the tip section, don't hold me to that.

857 Pro-Ti still one of the best
Speeder 952 never like it, very boardy
TrTi-46 awesome, but you have to tip it right for FW's
HM-4 nice shaft (100+)
Sapphire.. smooth (100+)

Pretty old school fujikura up there.

Others old school shafts
PM902 is very nice FW shaft
D03.. low launch low spin..you better bring it

Currently using WB83x and a sapphire but I'm going lighter and trying some TP7HD's.

I agree with you, that is what is normal. The specs on the Epic FW suited my needs, and it was a nice shaft for a tiny fortune ($170 PUREd and installed). It is stiffer, I assume, than the normal woods, but I don't know by how much. That, combined with the fact that I had heard it plays fairly stiff, promoted me to get a Stiff flex and tip it 1/4"; I swing a little quicker now and think that the best course of action short-term is to tip it another 1/4" for a total of 1/2".

Sorry I almost missed the question on the OBAN Revenge.

Revenge is a damn good FW shaft IMO. It can stand pretty much to any high end shaft out there if properly fit and installed.

This shaft plays more like in between RB and BB from mitsubishi in the same weight class. Smooth and easy to lift the ball up without ballooning it.

Good luck!

Joe

ps: In case you wanna try TRTI46 in S flex, I should still have 1 or 2 left in my stock....Other than that, I have no problem trying to fit you with the right tipping or installation on the OBAN Revenge or any other quality brand shafts.

Thanks, Joe! I sure will let you know. Right now I'm not in a position to buy new equipment, but I like to call myself a "window shopper".

When I find the right equipment, I know it, save for it and buy it - that's what I did with my Altus hybrid and it's changed my 585.h from almost being replaced to my favorite club in the bag!rolleyes.gif
