I use a 47, 52, 56, and 60. I use the Pelz 3x4 system so all of the clubs are used inside of 100 yards depending on the yardage. Works very well for me as I have used this for many many years.

I have gone from a pw 52 56 60 to a pw 52 56 combo. I found that I rarely used the 60 and prefered to open up the 56-10 for all conditions. For me it is easier to practice all types of shots with 1 club around the greens. I have no problems with the 56 out of the sand where I play. We dont have the real fluffy stuff. My yardages are the same as yours and I would never give up the 52 becuase I use that almost all the time as a full shot from 105-115. I have thought I would try a 53 and 57 combo from Scratch as my new wedge set?

15 clubs would be great for me too. I pulled the 5w for a 62 late last season. I miss the 5w at least once a round. Wedge set up is 47--130...52--115..58--100..62--85..full smooth swings. This provides a uniform gap, but I miss the 5w. I think this season I will go with 47, 52, 58 and add a 2h.

Ever thought of removing your 4-iron?  Jim Furyk plays without one.  Here's some interesting tidbit...

These player's iron take an interesting jump in loft.  The 5-pw are seperated by 4* but from 3-5, there' separated by 3*.  So as you calculate your projected distance, keep this in mind.

So instead of trying to mess around with 6* in the wedges, think about 6* in the long irons.
Max you bring up a good point.  However, when a pro eliminates an iron he's typically jacked up all other lofts around that eliminated club.  For example, Kenny Perry doesn't carry a 2 iron, in favor of his 3 iron jacked to 17*, and his other irons are jacked as well.

It's my belief that the stronger lofts becomes the more difficult those clubs are to properly hit for average Joe golfer.

Pelz is a tard, for me I would have rather seen the USGA max the club limit to 13 rather than change the grooves.

Start by checking the loft of the PW and make sure that it is really 47º.
Make sure that the lenght of the PW is 0,5" shorter (not 0,25) than the 9 iron.
Cut both 54 & 60 at exactly the same lenght of your PW.
Bend 54 to 53º and 60º to 59º (remember the bounce will drop 1º).
They now will play like you want.

Have a great game.
Yes.

If you take into account that the loft of the wedge is responsible for 80% (or more) of the distance and that playing longer wedges feels much more comfortable than bending over the ball, it seems reasonable to give it a try.

The reason why most of the manufacturers leave a gap of 0.25" instead of the 0.5" found on the rest of the irons, is mainly to avoid playing very short wedges (and not because of any scientific principle). Take a look for example, at the differences in lenght of the new Cleveland CG15. They don't even follow the 0.25" rule and the numbers are a bit crazy ;)

I play the same lenght for the PW & AW(51º) and my full swing gap is more consistent with the rest of the set than before. On the other hand, I also play the same lenght for 55º and 59º (both at at 0.25" shorter than the PW and AW due to swingweight needs).

Hope it helps.

Have a great game.

47= 130
54=110
60=85

Thats stepped on full and I go down in yardage by either gripping down or shortening the swing

Drop the 3 wood and hybrid put a 5 wood in the bag. You will hit the 5w farther then the 3w from the rough, hit it just as well from the rough as a hybrid and easier to play from a tight lie than a 3w and maybe hit 5 yards further than your 19* hybrid. From fairway. Always remove from the top end of the bag. Distance clubs vs scoring clubs no brainer.

Just here to say that I too love my 60* shot options and have had one in my bag for a long time. Above that, I used to have a 56* and felt like it skewed/overlapped too much with the 60*. The 54* I've been using gives me a much better spread in terms of distance and also a slightly different - and more useful - view of the shots I take with it.

STILL can't find a 2 wedge setup that works

I desprately want to put my 3 iron back into the bag this year while still playing a hybrid. My course is VERY short and I can just see using the 3 iron from the tee on 5 short par 4s. I KNOW I would save strokes leaving the driver in the bag. Sure I can use the 3 wood or hybrid but you almost cannot get in trouble using an iron on these holes. My only choice would be to drop a wedge.

I've been playing 52,56,60 for years. I tried 52 / 58 but the gap was to large and I just wasn't a fan of the 58 deg wedge.

Those 54 / 60 players I have a question. Is the gap too large between the PW and 54 (ap2 is 47 deg).

How far are you hitting the 54 in all honesty. I hit my PW 120-130 ish and my 52 100-120 ish depending if I'm stepping on it.

Can I squeeze 105 from a 54 if I can get 115 from the 52?

I would love to use 1 club from 100 in (54) and use the 60 around the green only.

Right now I use the 52 on full shots only, 56 on everything from 100 in and the 60 on short green shots / sand shots only.

Totally pissed that you cannot legally carry 15 clubs in the bag! That would only make sense with the advent of the Lob wedge!

The most important thing for me is a dedicated sand wedge for use in bunkers.54 not enough loft 58 can be not enough bounce.

An almost 11 year old thread. Back then when most pitching wedges were 47° or 48° the 54° 60° option was pretty popular.

With today's 43° - 44° Pitching Wedges not so much.

If scoring is important, you will make a lot more birdies and lower your score with 4 wedges.  There are many ways to do it but I carry 60, 55, 50 and 46.  You vary your swing length for the distances in between.  On the back end, I carry a 2 iron driving iron and a strong 4 iron.  All distance gaps are covered.

Ive played a 46-47 pw, 54, 60 combo for years now.

No need for a true gap wedge, I’m decent at flighting my PW to anything between 110-135. My 54 is my full smooth swing 110-115 but I’ll only hit a full 54 into tight greens with some room behind the hole. An 80-90 yard shot is a 3/4 54 with fantastic control and limited backspin.

60 could probably go 100 if I want it to, but I very rarely swing full with a 60. I like using a 60 from 75 yards and in.

Wedges are more feel based than yardage based for me. I can hit any of the 3 depending on yardages and shot flight I need to hit.

Personally, I would find both the gaps between a 47 and 54, and between a 54 and 60 to be too great.   Sure, I could "cover the gaps" with partial shots, but I don't like hitting wedges hard, and there is a limit to how much you can "take off" and still produce reasonable trajectory and spin in order to hold firm greens.   To improve scoring chances, I want  a couple options for trajectory/spin for any distance inside my PW distance, which is about 110 yards for me.

I have a pretty tight gap between my 49* PW and my 52* Vokey, but I tend to have a lot of shots in that range of distances, so I would most of these to be "full" shots.  I am comfortable with partial shots with my hybrids, and the need for precision at that end of the bag is much less, because the goal with these long clubs is really to just get on or around the green and avoid big trouble.

You want to maximize your scoring clubs.  I have majority of shots under 165 into par 4s, most under 140.  My setup is now 46 pw, 50 gap, 54 sw, 58 lob.  I prefer hitting full shots with a 58, and around the green can open up a 58 very easily.  Im playing 921 forged so I only carry 4 thru pw, and the 4 is strong, what used to be a 3 iron.  I'd rather have more gapping in

Full setup

Driver - 285

3 or 4 wood - 250

3 hybrid or 7 wood - 230

4 iron - 215

5 thru 9

Pw - 134

Gw - 118

Sw - 106

Lob - 94

I swapped to 4 wedges not because of distance control, but to allow me to hit certain shots.

I found it really difficult (for example) to hit a shot to a front pin on firm greens, where landing it short is not an option. A yardage between pw & 54 was not fun, especially in this scenario. I could land a pw the right distance, but it would have little chance of stopping quickly.

The gap between 54 & 60 was not the issue, I guess it’s different for everyone.
