54 / 60 wedge setup

Seems like weakening the loft on your 3, dropping your 4, and strengthening your 5, would free up the space for the wedge.

I've also dropped a club to fit in my wedges, in my case dropping a 5 iron, keeping my 4 iron as is but lengthening my 6 iron shaft by 1/4 inch & leaving loft as is.

Gets me gapping of 13 yards carry between 4 to 6 to 7, I have usually a smaller than typical carry gap between 4, 5 and 6 irons anyway with a high-ish ball flight so very manageable for me and I get more use out of each of my wedges in a round than a 5 iron anyway.

I played 46/54/60 for a while. For that gap wedge shot I learned the choke down pitch. Now playing 46/51/56/60. Thinking about going back, as I don't chip enough with 51* and my accuracy from GW distance isn't much better.

45, 50, 54, 58

The 54 SW is a wide sole with 12* of bounce that is a no-brainer to get out of 90% of sand situations. For those that struggle with sand shots I think a clubs bounce is only part of what a SW should be, the other part is a wide sole. If you get into fluffy sand a wide sole is paramount.

STILL can't find a 2 wedge setup that works

I desprately want to put my 3 iron back into the bag this year while still playing a hybrid. My course is VERY short and I can just see using the 3 iron from the tee on 5 short par 4s. I KNOW I would save strokes leaving the driver in the bag. Sure I can use the 3 wood or hybrid but you almost cannot get in trouble using an iron on these holes. My only choice would be to drop a wedge.

I've been playing 52,56,60 for years. I tried 52 / 58 but the gap was to large and I just wasn't a fan of the 58 deg wedge.

Those 54 / 60 players I have a question. Is the gap too large between the PW and 54 (ap2 is 47 deg).

How far are you hitting the 54 in all honesty. I hit my PW 120-130 ish and my 52 100-120 ish depending if I'm stepping on it.

Can I squeeze 105 from a 54 if I can get 115 from the 52?

I would love to use 1 club from 100 in (54) and use the 60 around the green only.

Right now I use the 52 on full shots only, 56 on everything from 100 in and the 60 on short green shots / sand shots only.

Totally pissed that you cannot legally carry 15 clubs in the bag! That would only make sense with the advent of the Lob wedge!

What wedge setup did you end up going with after that original post in 2010? What wedge setup do you play with now?

Ive been toying with the idea of a 48/54/60 setup .. All vokeys

I'm about to move to this with my T200's... the 48 will be the set GW, and a 54 10S vokey for 100yd approx duty, and the 60 L for greenside spin.  Plan to bump the 54 as much as possible, as right now I have been having good luck bumping a 52.  I think this setup will work just fine, despite my reluctance to switch to it.  Just had too big a gap from a 43 PW to a 52 GW currently.

I'm playing a mizuno pw blade that works better for me than a GW (and never used it around the greens).  I also don't carry a 4 iron but go 54, 58, 63.  Different bounce and grinds in wedges is way more versatile for me.

10 years later still 52 56 60 lol!

Alternate hybrid or 3 iron depending on the course I play - the Driver and 3 wood never leave the bag

I have a 50*, 54*, and 60*.  My PW (X Forged CB) is 45*.  I hit it full to about 125 yards.  I hit the 50* about 110 yards, the 54* about 95 yards, and the 60* about 75 yards.

For many years, and long time ago now, I carried the 2-PW, 56* and 60*.  I would hit the 56* about 100 yards.  But I am older now and lost some distance so made bag adjustment - 5-PW, 3 and 4 hybrids, driver and 3W.  I played a relatively short course at the club I belonged to and hit as many 2 irons off the tee as drivers.  My PW in those sets were 48* and I hit it 130 yards.  What I learned was how to hit a variety of shots with the PW to fit the gap between it and the SW.  What got tricky was taking something off PW to an elevated small green.

I personally don't like to hit the short irons hard.  I don't like to hit the 60 hard from the fairway especially.  The guy I like to watch hit the short irons is Justin Thomas.  I like my 50, 54, 60 set up and don't plan on changing it.  I practice hitting different flights with each of them.

Haha...well, if it ain’t broke huh, Lol? I’m actually considering making that move too, but haven’t made the decision to pull the trigger yet. I’ve got 52, 56, 60 also, but considering bending my 52 to 54 and taking the 56 out of the bag. Just bought new wedges in the last couple of months though, so probably need to give it more time...not 10 yrs though, Lol! 😉

I’d put more work into the 58 option. I can do everything with a 58 that a 60 player can and more. Flops, low spinners, bump and runs, plus can squeeze 100 yards when needed. Can’t do that with a 60!

It won’t happen over night, but you’ll love the results  if you put in some work and have fun with it.

Decided to pull the trigger and drop a wedge...figured it’s better to do it now and get comfortable with the new setup over the Winter so I’ll be ready to roll in the Spring!

I’m getting my TM MG 52 bent to 53.5, dropping my 56 and keeping the 60! So my new setup will be 47, 53.5-12, 60-10...we’ll see how it goes! 🤞🤞

Most people don't actually address their wedges with true loft.  As most amateur players (including some pretty darn good ones) go down the bag, their stances close.  Most people naturally address a 60* shot more open than a 5 iron, and this makes it a 62* wedge in practice.

You can't build a bag like this, by math.  It would be great if you could but you can't.  You have to figure out how far you hit each club.  This is why I'm a huge fan of forged wedges - not for "feel" but so they can be bent to cover small gaps.

Pick whatever wedge is your favorite.  Mine used to be a 48* sm4 I completely wore out.  Now its a 50* sm5.  Build around that favorite full-swing wedge by YARDAGE and TRAJECTORY not by loft.

Your posture, alignment and ball position (the holy trinity of wedge play) is not consistent club to club.  If you play the ball back an inch with the 54 you're suddenly playing 49-60.  All of it can work if you take the time to figure out how far each one goes.  Its infinitely more useful than just throwing lofts out there.  I play 46/50/56 and wedge play is the thing I do best, but I can make my 56 and 65 by taking a super weak grip, dropping the handle, opening my chest and lining up left to hit with high cut spin.  So do I play 46/50/56/65?  Kinda, I guess, because its repeatable.  That's the key.  Not lofts.  Repeatable setup and yardage.
