54 / 60 wedge setup

STILL can't find a 2 wedge setup that works
I desprately want to put my 3 iron back into the bag this year while still playing a hybrid. My course is VERY short and I can just see using the 3 iron from the tee on 5 short par 4s. I KNOW I would save strokes leaving the driver in the bag. Sure I can use the 3 wood or hybrid but you almost cannot get in trouble using an iron on these holes. My only choice would be to drop a wedge.

I've been playing 52,56,60 for years. I tried 52 / 58 but the gap was to large and I just wasn't a fan of the 58 deg wedge.

Those 54 / 60 players I have a question. Is the gap too large between the PW and 54 (ap2 is 47 deg).

How far are you hitting the 54 in all honesty. I hit my PW 120-130 ish and my 52 100-120 ish depending if I'm stepping on it.

Can I squeeze 105 from a 54 if I can get 115 from the 52?

I would love to use 1 club from 100 in (54) and use the 60 around the green only.

Right now I use the 52 on full shots only, 56 on everything from 100 in and the 60 on short green shots / sand shots only.

Totally pissed that you cannot legally carry 15 clubs in the bag! That would only make sense with the advent of the Lob wedge!

obviously I can just drop my 60 but I'm starting to love the Vokey mid bounce 60. So much easier to hit than the Nike VR 10 bounce 60 which on tight lies was skull city.

How do you get in more trouble with the hybrid than the 3 iron? Do you really hit the 3 iron that great? Then drop the hybrid.

Without seeing you swing and knowing the length of the shafts in the wedges (i.e. do they have the same length shaft?), no one on the internet is going to be able to tell you how far you can hit your 54 degree wedge. You say you hit the 52 100 - 120, then you say you hit it 115 and want to squeeze 105 from the 54.

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself you can squeeze 105 from the 54, which makes it a bad idea. Trying to max out a wedge yardage is not wise. You'll save more strokes and score better with the three wedges and not worrying about hitting any wedge "all out" or squeezing distance out of it.

I play AP2's and wouldn't think of having a 7 degree gap between my "P" and my next wedge, no way.

At the same time, plenty of people who are better wedge players than me can do what you want to do.

Off the tee the 3 iron is low straight and runs. No chance of a hook. With the longer shaft and distance, the hybrid can go left / right, .... all over but I would never drop it (Need to play one) because of it's ease out of the rough.

that is a huge gap from your PW to 54..if you swing that hard at it..it will suck back off the green. put your 52 and 56 back in the bag. You need to pick up a VR 60.06 for hard pan and keep you 60.10 during softer conditions. OR just open your 56 with the heel grind and leave your 60 at home.

There's more to any one club then it's fixed full swing yardage.  You sound as though you have a limit on what constitutes creative shot yardages.  I use 54 from 30 yds out to 105 yds and 60* from 70 yds in.  Determining which is influenced by conditions.  I can also use PW for 90-110 yards as well as much shorter 50-60 yd shots, and 3 iron for 120 yd shots.

I think you need to learn how to be more creative with your clubs so you have greater options.  Static yardages limit creativity and better scores.

I started doing the 54/60 thing middle of last summer and I think that it has given me more versatility in the shots I can play between 125 and 75 yards. Before, if I wasn't hitting the ball my best my yardage gaps were all over the place and I would sometimes not be able to hit the 56 over 100 yards. I hit my wedges a little bit further than most for some reason as my 60 goes about 95 easily and about 115 with the 54, 135 with the 48 PW. Overall, I've been able to add some shots to my game between 75 and 125 yards with those two clubs. I haven't lost too much versatility around the green as I can just open up the 54 a little.

You should be able to hit the 54 about 5-7 yards further than your 56 depending on how you hit your wedges. I agree with you that once you get attached to the 60 it is hard to let it go no matter how many people are going with the 58/54 or 58/52 combos.

I had the 54/60 set up all of last year. Going back to 52/56/60 for this year. Like you I hated the 58 when I tried it. I hardly used the 54 hence the change this year. It became a 95 yard club, that was pretty much it. It was like brand new when I sold it and that was after 150 rounds. I decided to go 3 wood then 3 iron.

Really the hardest thing is laying off the 47* pw on those 110 115 yard shots . . just need to practice more tho when it warms up . . the whole key to good yardages with any wedge is just a lot of range time, yardage lasers, and repitition

I have played a 54-60 for a number of years and still like it. I prefer to work my PW for any shots over 105, and use the 54 and 60 for shots under that range. I have always struggled getting a full gap wedge to do what I want...hence the choked or 3/4 PW.

I really never hit any wedge full...just think it is a bad idea. If I have to jump on PW, then I know I am better off hitting the 9 iron.

The 54 is great on long bunker shots, plays bump and runs well.

On most greenside shots I let the lie determine 54 or 60, I can manipulate them both well enough.

Joe

That being said my course has gone soft and I considered picking up a 52-56-60 set up with more bounce in the 56 13 0r 14 than I play now. I can never decide on the 14th club and played most of last year with 13, leaving the GW in the trunk. That's if I can find a GW I really like and work around like my PW.

How do you find the 56.10 compared to the 56.14. I LOVED my VR 56.14 all year until I went to florida. It was very hard when i played. I cannot believe how bad I hit the 14 bounce 56. 4 deg makes a HUGE difference on hardpan!

In theory you should be able to open the lower bounce 56 to hit flop shots correct? It make take 10 hours to pick out a pair of wedges I can get comfortable with!

Can spring not get here soon enough. I cannot wait until the midwest outing BTW!

I play a PW, 54, 60 set up. All of my irons have been bent one degree weak, so my PW is now 48.

These are what I get out of each club on "stock" shots. I will grip down to go in between those distances if need be. I almost never try and step on a wedge shot since the spin rate goes up too much.

56.14 in FL ..LOL..no way it works. it would be nice to have 2 56 and 2 60 degree wedges with diffferent bounce angles depending on conditions..some say it depends on your swing..? I feel it depends on conditions more. I love 10 degrees of bounce on my 56..never want more. I have hardly ever seen sand so soft I need that much bounce..I wish I had the 60 with 10 degrees of bounce for wet turf here; my 60.06 is great during the hard summer months though. If you go back to FL pick up a wedge with 6 degrees of bounce or less...

The Dunes is incredible..one of my favorite tracks!

Even though hybrid replacements can provide more distance compared to an equivalent iron, they have more dispersion in the hands of someone with strong SS party due their overall length and head designs to help get the ball up.  I understand they are easier to hit for many folks, still from what I've seen and tested dispersion is far greater then 3i or 2i.

Exactly. It's VERY hard for me to mishit / get in trouble with a long iron off the tee- It might get get the distance you need when you miss hit it but I NEVER snap hook or slice an iron.

How about nudging the loft on your PW to 48-49 or maybe switching it out for a Vokey or Cleveland wedge of the same loft. I've been playing a 54/60 combo for the last 2 years with a Vokey 48 bent to 47 and I've found the Vokey much easier to hit 3/4 shots with than my I3+ PW for some reason. I've had very good luck covering yardage from about 140 in with this wedge combo.

Same with me... If I miss hit my 2i it's going to be on the left side of the fairway; maybe right if the ground feeds it in that direction; but seldom in the junk either way.  I can snap hook an iron like everyone else; but only when I am not paying attention and trying to make a club go 15-20 yds longer.

Well, then you've answered your own question. You hit your 3 iron perfect, never hook or slice it, so use it and learn to be more versatile with what you will have left for wedges.

I don't agree that apples to apples hybrids are always going to result in more shot dispersion, or that off the tee that is going to result in more missed fairways, we're not talking greens, than an iron. I see that as more of a shaft issue, but I'm not a perfect 3 iron player, and more power to those of you that can still handle them.

I just put new Cleveland CG12's in with the 54/60 setup, replacing my old ping 52/58 combo. After 2 rounds i can safely say that the 54/60 is a better setup for me because i need the 60's loft around the greens. I for some reason seem to hit them both farther than the 52/58 combo (figure that one out!). I bet you will use the 54 degree for more shots around the green and from 30-50 yards. I highly recommend you try it.

Played a 48, 54 and 60 Vokey setup when I started. Nothing I couldn't do with it that I now do with my 47, 51, 55, 60 setup now. My yardages have increased so much that I needed the extra wedge. Practice all your shots by feeling them or through setup variations or a combination of both. You'll be fine if you stick with it. For bounce, 4-6* on the PW, 10-12* on the SW and 6-8* on the LW if you're on firm turf. Add 2* to each if softer.

I'd dump the 60 and get a 56 you can open up.. Hey, wait.. that's what I did!:good:

Used to love my 60, but it was part of the set I traded in. Got the MX-200's (4-GW) and they go 45 / 50. I bought the T-10 56, fully intending to bend it to 55 and then buy another trusty 60. The 56 was so good I left it alone and now run 45 / 50 / 56-10

I use the 45/50 for full to 3/4 shots and the 56 for everything from about 80 in, including sand. Of all my clubs the 56 is the most versatile in the bag.

Ever thought of removing your 4-iron? Jim Furyk plays without one. Here's some interesting tidbit...

These player's iron take an interesting jump in loft. The 5-pw are seperated by 4* but from 3-5, there' separated by 3*. So as you calculate your projected distance, keep this in mind.

So instead of trying to mess around with 6* in the wedges, think about 6* in the long irons.
