Half Players, Half GI irons

I've noticed that both the MX-300 and Diablo Forged are both GI irons that are almost players irons. They seem to fit the bill perfectly for someone like me, a 9-10 handicap.

 

Has anyone hit both of them? comparisons?

 

Any other irons that seem to fit the bill?

Have not hit either of those sets but I do know of another set that fits the bill: PING i15.

The i15 short irons have player's profiles (thin topline, shorter head-to-toe) while the longer irons have thicker toplines and soles (but are far from shovels like most GI irons). The long irons also are relatively longer heel-to-toe. I'm a 10 and they're the perfect "tweener" set for me. Love them.

As with any golf club, just make sure you get the right shaft for your swing. Some love the stock AWT shafts but I didn't care for them much - too light, too spinny. Much prefer the KBS Tours on these i15's.

I have not hit the 300's because im a lefty but my bestfriend had the chance to hit them and he feel in love. He was currently using titleist AP1 and said the difference in feel was unexplainable. I have hit Ap1's and Ap2's then switched to mp-57's so i know the feeling difference he is talking about. MX-300's have been called the best iron made by more people than i would like to admit... Just sucks they wont give us leftys some love.

The MX-300s feel great for sure! I think I'm adding AP2 710 to my list though, they seem to be pretty forgiving as well.

MP52, I guess this set would fit the description. Weaker lofts, less offset, yet very forgiving like a GI set.

One thing to consider between the AP2s and the MX300s and really for all irons, are the shafts. While many of the heads blur the line between GI/Players, the shafts are an indication of who the OEM intended to play the irons. If you plan to special order or change shafts, no issue, but if you want the convienence of staying with stock, that will have to be a consideration.

The MX 300 comes with a lighter Dynalite Gold and the AP2 with Dynamic Gold. If you want a regular shaft it is harder to find on the shelves in AP2s. Others for your consideration:

Callaway Diablo Forged (Cast face)
Nike Forged MachSpeed (Japan - Cast face)
Taylormade R9 Forged (Japan-May release)might still be relased in U.S.
Taylormade Burner Forged (Japan)
TE Exotics XCG3

As we can see, the Japan market puts a high value on this segment that often includes Forged or 2pc Forged Irons with GI designs.

I have been in the same boat here for the last cpl weeks. I went with the MX300. The AP1 and 2 were really good, and I really liked the Cleveland Black Pearls. Close to MX300 in feel, IMO.

But the MX300's just feel sooo good.

I have never hit forged before so this is a new experience for me. Now I know what people mean by smooth. And also the feedback you get is really cool.

Hahaha yep! I play MP-32s right now, so I know all about that Mizuno feel. Last time I hit the MX-300s, thought they felt great!

If you are looking for a great feeling club, I'd stay away from the Ping i10. I think they perform great, look great and have a level of forgiveness that I need, but the feel is just not there (IMO). Though it could be the shafts, I've been playing the AWT. I'm trying out a set of I701 tours with the TC3 shaft... we'll see how they compare.

I think the MX-300's and the Diablo Forged are the best two irons out there. Tons of forgiveness and great forged feel with a players look. The i15's feel extremely harsh in comparison to either, in my opinion.

I tried all the new Mizzy's with bunch of shafts. I dig the swing dna thingy. I kept going back to X-Forged and ordered them.

r7 TP's if you are looking for cheap. Definitely one of the best feeling cast clubs out there, super forgiving for a players iron, but still very workable.

You can't go wrong with the 300's IMO and I am with you on the feeling Mizuno right now. Although I love my I-701's I have been dying to get back to Mizzys and get the feeling back. I am very interested in the Nippons as well; how do they feel compared to other shafts you've hit. I like the ballflight of my PX's but the feel is pretty harsh compared to anything else. I plan on going back to Edwin Watts soon and trying the KBS Tours as well as the Nippons.

Maybe try the R9 TP's?

4-5 iron are very GI - but the 6 down is lovely, nice feedback, thin topline and minimal offset. The feedback is great too with the KBS Tour shafts.

I play the Nike forged VR wedges and I think that the R9's aren't losing out on feel.

Just my 2c for whatever it's worth!

I have been combining my black pearls with some of my CG2's in the long irons as of late with good success. Did not like the Nike soles....

You might want to wait and try the new Bridgestone J38 irons coming out soon.They sound like they could be just what you are looking for.
