Sorry dude, your wrong. His is bent to around 20-21 degrees I believe. A 9 wood bent to 3 wood loft would only be about 19 degrees open.[/quote

You would be wrong. Vijay used a a Cleveland 9wd bent to a 7wd (21* of loft) not 19*open.
He likes the look of an open clubbface.

And the whole artice amuses me on what so called "crutches" the PGA Tour players use. When not ONE of you that has posted could hold a candle to ANYTHING these pros (listed before) have done on the course. It just makes me laugh at the arrogance of some of the members of this board. I thought coming here (from Bombsquad) would surround me with players that somewhat knew what they were talking about. I guess not (in some respects).
Unlike yourself, MANY of us expect more from Tour Pros that spend 8 hours a day, 6 days a week with a club in their hands playing and practicing. We dont expect them to have a need for, or want to game, GI clubs....
Or maybe they don't practice 8 hours a day six times a week. Perhaps, these guys have families that are a little more important than golf. Maybe, these guys have such a busy playing and travel schedule that they can't practice as much as they would like or perhaps they have been on tour for so long (Rocco, Kenny Perry) that they have earned the right to play whatever they please and don't care what the equipment looks like.

My expectation of the pros is that they, like me, play what works. And since only 28 out of the Top 125 only play blades...would suggest that your level of expectation is not theirs.

BTW, I'm not picking on you. From looking at WITB if most pros, they all carry at least one hybrid, have putters with various alignment aids, etc., that suggests they are looking to make the game easier and not harder. Isn't that the objective?
As far as practice, that's their profession. How well would it go over if you told your boss that you cant work 40hrs this week because you want to spend more time with your family? Assuming you have a job that requires atleast 40hrs a week. I know plenty of guys that work more than 40hrs for WAY less than a tour pro brings home, and they dont get a nice 2mo break at the end of the year to relax. We see practice as a hobby for them it's much different. Putting in a 6-8hr workday is not unreasonable.

I know it's not personal and wouldnt take it that way at all. EVERY guy out there can play what they like. That's why we such a wide variety from which to choose. I personally like to watch the blade guys shaping shots but thats just me. Then again Watson moves the HELL out of the ball with the Ping blades. It's subjective, diff ppl like diff things....

Hey!!! I like my 2 ball!!

The Clevland VAS has to be the worst of the worst!!!! That and every Long putter!!

How bout John Daly when he played that white kevlar headed driver...cant think of the name.
Kevlar headed, red shafted driver was a Cobra.

Re Cleveland VAS I traded my Ping K1's in for a set. 2 days later I was pleading with my pro to let me have my Pings back !!!

Yeah, those starship putters are ridiculous. 4 balls and 8 sight lines. Cameron even put 3 or 4 sight lines on his BALL MARKER/alignment tool. Really??

You never see any of the starship/4ball/MOI crew consistently leading the stats in the putting category though.
Retief Goosen's putter currently looks like a laptop computer attached to a flagpole! I never found these types of putters to be that helpful either, but I guess you can get some pretty bad putting yips if you are playing for millions.
I heard Frank Nobilo say that Goosen's putter was created at MIT. Judging from all the putts he's been making lately there has to be some serious technology in there.
So it could be a laptop computer! haha

If my job relied on me hitting the shot, I would want to find the easiest club to hit that still allows me to move the ball around a bit.

I currently play my combo set, but am thinking about going to a combo set with 710 MB up to 6 iron, and then AP1 for the 3-4-5.

I have to make birdie on 18 to make an extra 50,000$..... I sure as hell don't want to have to hit the pin sized sweet spot on my 710MB 3i when I'm 219 out....
Are you currently on tour? Do you practice avg 8hrs a day, 6 days a week? Not sure why avg golfers think that tour pros need the same help that a weekend golfer does.

I REALLY think some guys underestimate just how much time tour level professionals spend practicing. I guess I give them WAY more respect than some ppl do, since I have an idea of how hard they really work.
I could ask you the same question, so i will. Are you currently on tour? First you say you expect more from our pros? So now you have expectations for someone that you don't know at all? Ok, and since tour pros practice at least 8 hours a day, maybe they don't want the whole week of 8 hours a day work wasted, just because they mishit the blade and it went in the water short. Cdn's point makes a lot of sense to me, and unless your on tour, I doubt you could possibly stop a 3 iron from 220.

Thanks for the second helpful post in this thread captain obvious, if it's alright with you we would like to continue discussing the GI equipment now.

KJ, Cink, Leonard, Els for a short time with square drivers. Seems to be on the "game improvement" side.

A few years ago at the Houston Open he was playing a practice round with Hank Kuehne, and on # 3 - a long par 3 playing probably 230+, he hits an iron on the front of the green then absolutely stuffs it with the 9-wood. Kuehne just stares at him, grabs the club from VJ and says, "this f*****g thing should be illegal!". It was hilarious. I was taking some video of them and I think I may have caught it, but it's on an actual tape ( mini-dv) or else I'd upload it.

Ignacio Garrido and Eduardo Romero used to carry Momentus Short Game wizard wedges in their bags.

JM SIngh used to play Fusion irons but has since switched to Diablos. He carries 2 Zing wedges though, they haven't changed.

Monty has also always preferred a GI iron - Wilson, Callaway, Hogan and now Yonex shovels have all been in his bag over the last 20 years.

Immelman won the Masters with Nike CGI, not the forged ones - the regular GI
Remember the '08 US Open when Rocco with the standard x20 gave Tiger a very hard time. Now he is playing the regular x-22
Monty - Hogans CFT, now Yonex with graphite shafts
K.J. Choi made 2nd lately with G15 (including the wedges !!!). There are at least 4 more players with the G15 these days
Kenny Perry - not a bad season at all with his TM r7 irons, the regular not the TP ones...

I don't earn money with golf but sometimes I loose some to my buddies. I decided to give the G15 a try...

I hate to keep going off topic, but unless I'm missing something, if a club allows for increased forgiveness over a blade, and is workable enough for the pro using it, why does it matter? Just because pros practice and play more, and are clearly much better than anyone on these boards, doesn't necessarily mean they need to play with the most difficult equipment possible. Instead of using tacky gloves to help with catches, should NFL receivers have to use greasy gloves just because they're better than anyone else? Should tennis pros have to play tennis with squash racquets because they are better than anyone else?

Look at Phil back at the beginning of the season: while he plays more difficult clubs by and large, one could argue that his use of the Eye2s was a MAJOR crutch, and while some people condemned it, if it's legal, then why not?

I understand that some people really like blades, and that's fine, but if a pro thinks that, even with the high calibre game he/she has, he/she could get a little more performance out of a club that's easier to hit, then why not?

Back on topic, does Els using the FT-iz count as game-improvement?

 • 1 month later...

Well i skimmed thru the thread, but didnt read every post word for word so if I missed someone else saying this i sincerely apologize, since some people take this way too serious but...... bakc to topic

THe WITB photos from I think Quail Hollow showed Trevor Immelman's with a complete set of NIke Victory Red full cavity irons, they are game improvement, i have a set and love them. They are not the "super GI" stuff like the slinghsots but they are GI. I was pumped to know I play the same clubs as a previous Masters winner.

I remember reading somewhere that Alan Doyle liked to play a driver that was

3* closed. When Taylormade came out with the 07 Burner Draw he put it in he bag.

Now that's game improvement.

I was just going to say this. I also thought I had heard(a few years ago), that he had

an "offset" Adams driver in the bag!! If that was true, now THAT'S GI.drinks.gif

It just makes so much sense for the way that Doyle hits his tee ball. TONS of lateral hip slide, slings a push draw.
