10 iron?

Okay, so I found a 10 iron in a buddy's old bag that he said I could rummage through. In addition to the Browning 440 3 iron that I "collected" I found a 10 iron that I think would be the putter. The question is, am I correct to assume that the 10 iron is a putter? It's an old MacGregor Lady Parmaker (yes I know it's a girl's club, but I actually kinda like it). It can't be more than 33 inches long, probably shorter and has an old round leather wrap on it. It also has the Brunswick "B" logo that I recognize from my old bowling days (I still throw an old Rhino when I bowl, I bought a Hammer a couple years ago, but it's just not like the old ones, it's just a bastardized Hammer that Ebonite ruined, but I digress). I did not know they were into golf. Or they worked with Mac for that matter.

Could be wrong, but I thought it is now called the pitching wedge.

That would make logical sense. But this thing has nowhere near the loft of a pitching wedge. It looks flat and the face has a spot for grooves, but no grooves there.

Didn't Callaway also make a 10 iron on one point? It was basically a pitch wedge loft I think.

Yes here is a picture of the 10 iron / putter that came with the set of Mac Silver Scots that I got from PersimmonPal. Its lovely as is the rest of the set.

MacGregor Iron sets used to be made 2-9, and the wedges were always special ordered, or extra.. The store model clubs, ie those that were sold at department stores rather than pro shops, often came with woods, irons and putter.. Usually when they were sold in this grouping, the putter included was not marked "putter", but "10" as yours is..

That makes sense. I did not think that Brunswick was big in golf. Did Mac license out their name for it? Or did they just make department store clubs and pro line clubs?

Not sure of the exact dates, but Brunswick purchased MacGregor sometime in the late 60s early 70s.. the beginning of the end for MacGregor (Or maybe it was when Toney Penna left)..

That looks a lot like the Patty Berg putter that came with my junior set back in the 1970s (and the set probably came from the 1960s):

Brunswick bought the company in 1958 and sold it in 1978. Penna left it in the mid 1960s, but he'd already begun to wear out his welcome and lose influence before that.

When the downturn began is debatable, and you'll get all kinds of theories. Some say it was when they lost Hogan in 1953 or when they failed to sign Palmer in 1954. Some say it was the ball debacle in 1957. For many it was the sale to Brunswick in 1958, and the move from Cincinnati to Georgia in 1962. Some say it was when Armour left in 1962 or Penna in 1963. Likely, it was a combination of all. That the top company in the game made such missteps during their peak should be a warning to everyone in the industry.
