wonder what it will be like.
So, I ran across this link today at Masters.org

http://www.masters.com/en_US/news/articles/2010-03-15/201003151268674188359.html

Seems like a great idea, although maybe a bit premature considering I don't know anyone who has a 3D tv yet. Does anyone on golfwrx have one???

I believe it will. I did a search of 3d tv and apparently they are out now, but they cost around $8k. Then you have to buy the glasses for $150 a pop.

I've seen some Samsung 3d tv's for a lot less than 8k - 3-4k range and they are throwing in one pair of glasses with the deal. Glasses will be necessary for a long time as far as I know...wondering how long it take for content to catch up...guess my BluRay's are going to be obsolete soon. Oh well.

I don't think it's premature. By doing this they will increase demand for 3D sets. Sort of like how HD did.

First of all, it only costs the manufacturer about $50 in additional hardware to make a TV 3D capable.

Sony had a demo TV in one of their stores so I tried it. The video game demos had a greater impact than the TV demos - people kind of look like cardboard cutouts when they're pulled forward from objects in the background.

Wearing the glasses kind of sucks and it means that it people come over, everyone needs a compatible pair to watch comething in 3D...

It's nothing but a gimmick for now. I'd rather the networks and cableco's put their efforts towards broadcasting everything in 1080p before wasting money on 3D.

They've actually published the spec for 3D through BluRay, and (in theory) you won't have to replace your BluRay player. Any modern LCD / LED television should also support it. The trick is the requirement of the glasses and the extra data in the video feed to the screen. Naturally, a high refresh rate (at least 120Hz) will be necessary.

Sony already announced that the Sony Open in 2011 will be broadcast in 3D. I think the Masters folks decided to garner credit for being first tourney to broadcast a golf tournament in 3D and signed a deal with Sony to do the Masters in 3D before the Sony Open next year. The info about the 3D coverage is in the Masters iPhone App. The Par 3 contest on Wednesday will be broadcast in 3D if anyone wants to try and view that on the new 3D HDTVs at Best Buy or some other store.

The first new 3D technology Samsung and Panasonic 3D HDTV's went on sale this past week. Sony's 3D HDTV's will go on sale in a couple of months. These HDTV's require the new gray shutter 3D glasses. These glasses can run up to $150 or more for a high end pair. Samsung will give away two pairs of 3D shutter glasses starting next week if you buy a new 3D HDTV and a new 3D ready Blue Ray player. Best Buy currently has a 55" Samsung 1080p new technology 3D HDTV on sale for $3000.

Apparently, none of the older 3D "ready" HDTV's will work with this new 3D technology. So far, only Mitsubishi has announced a new technology 3D adapter box that can be added to their older 3D "ready" HDTVs. Perhaps Samsung, Panasonic and Sony will also make some sort of adapter kit available in the future for their 3D "ready" HDTV's.

I don't believe that anyone should remotely consider buying a new HDTV unless it is one of the new technology 3D 1080p HDTVs. This stuff is the real deal folks. It is not the gimmicky "3D of the past that worked with the old plastic colored glasses. However, I understand that there aren't even 5 new technology 3D videos out at this time. The flow will be starting this year.

the only requirement is 240hz refresh rate..
I may be wrong, but I believe that is incorrect. While it is true that all of the first generation new technology 3D HDTV's have a 240hz refresh rate, the new 3D technology broadcasts and DVDs will not work on any HDTV that is not new technology 3D HDTV. Even the current crop of 3D "ready" HDTVs running at 240hz cannot handle this new 3D technology.

I agree, we have to get to 100% HD first before we can start seeing major programming in 3D. Id say we are at least 5 years away. Its taken 10 years just to get some decent HD broacasts.

Sooo.... last year's Super Bowl (2009) had a commercial that was 3D- was I seeing things on my non-3D capable HD TV? I remember picking up the cardboard glasses at the local super market.

I'm guessing they are using a different standard or something?
The red/blue card board glasses and the polarized lenses are different. These "shutter" glasses open and close each eyepiece 60 times a second, hence the requirement for 120hz for the broadcast.

I see it going NOWHERE. Completely impractical. The glasses are why 3d has gone nowhere for years.

I agree. Especially if, like me, you already wear glasses. If I'm going to wear special glasses, why do I need the TV at all? Give me glasses with two 2-inch LCD monitors, one over each eye that allows me to view the two different images, and we have 3-D.

Supposedly, Philips had developed a 3D TV that did not need the glasses, but the cost and practicality of the unit was still 5-10 years away.

This technology is 24 months away from being useful. First of all, most media available today will be short films of special interest. Secondly, sporting events that are shot in 3d will be pretty silly, think about what will be in 3d. FOr the Masters it will be flowers, there will not be cameras in front of the ball when it is struck. Third, 3d will lend it self to amazing commercials, making people think twice before they skip over them with their DVR.

If you want a 3d TV now, you have 3 companies to choose from:
Sony (not available until June)
Samsung
Panny

Panny is the only plasma on the market

You will need a special BD player ($700) and the sets ship with (1) pair of glasses, each set of glasses is $150 per pair.

Fox and Universal are the only studios that have signed up for the new technology.

If you want to see what it will be like, go to your local movie theater this weekend and check out March Madness.
