Turning a 5 wood into a 4 wood?

Would bending a Titleist 5 wood (19 degrees) to something like a 4 wood be a good idea? For some reason I can hit my 5 wood well but have never been able to hit a 3 wood consistently in the past...and I need something in the 230-250 yrd range.

I did use my dad's Mizuno 4 wood in the past and it has treated me well...but he's going to be taking it back this year.

If you bend your 5 to a 4 what replaces that distance in your bag?? Find a higher lofted 3 wood or lower 4 wood. Sounds either way like you need to buy a new club!

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that if I were to do this I would be doing it with my old Titleist 904 5 wood, and getting myself a new 909F3 5 wood.

What are you planning on bending the 5 wood to? The 909f3 5 wood is only 18* that only leaves three degrees of loft between that and a three wood, so I don't see the point. If I were you, I would try to find a three wood that you can hit well as there isn't enough loft to work with between the two clubs to make a difference.

Since changing loft in a wood means, bending it open, you would have to change the FA by 3° to lower your loft by 1.8°. If you fear the left side of your golf course, it might do the trick. If not - I would search for a #4 wood that fits your needs.

Get a 4-wood. Slightly longer shaft than a 5-wood, slightly shorter than a 3-wood. Choke down for 5-wood distance, use the full length for closer to 3-wood distance. You'll be able to subtract one club from your longer distances and gain another scoring club i.e. wedge. I am NOT a fan of bending woods to adjust loft.

Which companies do? And I have a feeling that it's the length of the 3 wood that is causing my inconsistency. Because with both the 5 wood and the 4 wood I feel comfortable looking over the ball and the 3 wood just doesn't feel right.

Instead of bending the 5 wood should I just shorten a 3 wood?

Callaway always used to sell 4 woods, pretty sure they still do.

Was looking at Martin Laird's WITB clip on the PGA Tour website, he has a 5 wood bent to 3 wood loft as he says he prefers the smaller head look to his fairway wood.

Titleist last made a 4 wood with the 904F series - it was 17 degrees as I recall. Can still be found on eBay occassionally.

A number of manufacturers make a fairway wood with a 17 degree loft - although they may not call it a 4 wood. Cleveland calls theirs a weak three wood, I've seen others labeled a 5 wood. But the point is there are quite a few to choose from.
