One Ball Rule

Does color matter? (Srixon related)
Since many professional tournaments have the 'one ball rule' would changing color golf balls violate that rule? IOW, if you play the Z Star (white) and it became advantageous or you just wanted a change, could you switch to the exact same Z Star (yellow). Is it considered the same ball?

Hmmm...???

What about at the FBR when the nike one black came out and all the nike staff hit a black ball on 16? I think if they are the same ball just different colours it should be fine. But with the srixons thats not the case I believe.

The Tour Yellow must be considered a separate model, and therefore you couldn't switch between a Z-Star Tour Yellow and a Z-Star. Wish I could remember where I read about this ball specifically...

I wondered about that too, but they list them separately on the USGA site suggesting that they are not considered the same ball.

From Appendix I:

(i) One Ball Condition

During a stipulated round, the balls a player plays must be of the same brand and model as detailed by a single entry on the current List of Conforming Golf Balls.

All that matters is how it is listed on the USGA's conforming list. The Z-Star yellow (Tour) is listed separately (as shown in the above post) so it is considered its own entity (because it has a different name) and can't be switched to if you started out with a regular Z-Star in a Tournament where the one ball rule was in effect. The USGA uses ball marking to identify balls, not color. The balls Paula Creamer switches between are just different color versions of a single ball on the conforming list.

It wasn't meant to be surly. I was actually in agreement with your post. My "different characteristics" line was directed towards the Srixon in question. Meaning it must be a different ball and Creamers was the same ball just a different color. But I decided to do some research to see if I, and you, were in fact wrong, and we were.

I was being sarcastic. Me being wrong about something is not an unusual occurrence, so i'm used to it. drinks.gif

On the sleeve of the Tour Yellow it has info concerning the one ball rule. Basically saying you can't change between the white and yellow ball during an official tournament round. I have to say I like the Tour Yellow quite a bit. My course has pretty long dormant rough and I have yet to look for a ball. I'm sold and can't wait until the course is in top shape to see what the ball really has to offer performance wise.

Yes...this is where I saw the one ball rule info for the yellow Srixon. Just couldn't remember when I posted.

A seperate question but related.

Wouldn't it matter how the tournament committe interpretes the one ball rule? For example, the committee could interpret the rule as being any Srixon ball but the ball must be a Srixon. Whereas, the PGA tour interpretes the one ball rule as being one kind and make of golf ball.
