Driving Ranges in Big D

Just moved to Dallas (University Park area) and I'm looking for a public range with in a reasonable distance, searching google hasn't helped much. Greatly prefer hitting off of grass than mats, thanks.

If you're close to 75 or George Bush, you can hop on those and go over to The Practice Tee near UTD. Great range.

Your best bets, unfortunately, are the Munis: LB Houston, Cedar Crest, & Keeton Park.

Google maps says that Cedar Crest is the closest to your location. Watch your back if you go down there if you know what I mean. Nice golf course though.

Tenison is likely closer to your location, put the range there has mats.

You could also join a CC . . .

North Texas Golf Center, Walnut & 35E
Golden Bear Golf Center, Trinity Mills and Midway
Marsh Lane (Just south of Golden Bear)
City Pointe, 35E and 635
Top Golf, Park East of 75 (have to get the monthly membership to hit off grass)

Someone is building a range at 35E and Wycliff, don't know if it will have grass.

From University park Golden Bear is going to be your best bet, it's easy to get to off the tollway, it's one of the best ranges around (although the wind out of the South get's old at a South facing range).

That would be Hank Haney - it's essentially the one that was in Uptown moved up there. His website says that it will be all grass.

I live just north of there and I've been going to Tenision. No grass, but it's close. Also been meaning to try Top Golf.

I did the Top Golf route not too long ago. Neat twist to the normal driving range. Beer, couches, computer tracking of each golf ball. But, I did hit off mats.

Every time I've tried to go to Top Golf, it's been booked and I've wound up at Tenision instead. One thing, I think if you need clubs they'll let you use new Callaways for free.

The clubs at TopGolf are far from new. I wouldnt recommend going to TopGolf to get any real work done. Without one of the permium memberships you'll be paying around $5 for 20-25 balls.

I live downtown Rt 30 on the east side and the new Hank Haney range @ 35N and the Medical District exit is now open. I've gone a few times already but the most important fact about the place is the surrounding buildings provide plenty of shade after 5:30pm. $15.00 for a large 110 count bucket was a little pricey but the grass was more than adequate. There is a full repair shop and swing simulator rented by the hour.

I've done some more looking since my last post. All of the following have grass hitting areas. Probably too late for the OP, but hopefully it will help others who find this thread.

Sherrill Park in Richardson is about 20 minutes North on 75 from UP and has a nice, grass range that is in fine shape. Course itself looks in great shape, too, although I have not played it yet.

"The Practice Range" is west of there and also has grass. I can't put my finger on why, but I didn't find it very enjoyable. Range was not in the best of shape but was certainly adequate and the staff was okay, I might feel different it I lived closer, but I probably won't be back. They have a pitch n putt course as well.

If you're on the West side of UP, you should try North Texas Golf Academy. It is at the very West end of Walnut Hill, just past 35. It's got a great "Old School" vibe, and the hitting area is large and well kept. There is a lot of dirt out on the range itself, so when your ball lands, it kicks up a dust cloud. Doesn't sound that nice, but I thought it gave me a good idea of distance. Really great short game practice area and par three course, too. I hope to be back soon.

Marsh Lane Golf Center is north of LBJ. Kind of small, but has a grass hitting area. Haven't tried it yet.

Got a groupon for half off at Top Golf. That was the only way I'd try it, even though it is the closest range to my house. Still haven't been there, but hope to check it out soon if it isn't effing packed. Like Rusty Wedges said, probably not a good place to do work, though.
