Good points all, but I still liked having that backup, even backup for my own fault of forgetting to bring it in to recharge (i knew there was a fresh one in the bag) and when i had to switch batteries between holes that was a strong reminder to bring them in and charge them both.

Don't kid yourself if you think they aren't this gor revenue generation, just like the iPhone, iPad and now the newest Mac Powerbooks,

*Sell people a device with an non-replaceable battery
*Battery will last long enough to get though the warranty period
*When batery does go or doesn't last long enough to get through a round, you choice will be to send it in for repair for $100-150 (or probably more) or you can buy the new model for $350-400 instead of buying a $40 replacement battery. They will get you coming and going...
*regardless of who makes the device it will be skygolf getting the service fee to replace the battery...
*I've had the SG2, SG4 currently have the SG5 and now awaiting delivery of the SGX (due 4/19), love the product but when the SGX is ready to be replaced I think I will seriously consider one of the competitors. I know they push that ground mapping vs. satellite mapping but last week I played with a guy who had the GolfLogix on his phone and that an my SG5 were never more that a yard or two off (more than accurate enough for my game) and 29.95 a year sounds better than $400 plus serive fee plus who knows how many weeks without the device while it is repaired if it ever does go.
*I've bought them all so it is not matter of the cost it's just the blatant bending me over and giving it to a loyal customer without any lube and being belligerent about it...

I've had some issues with the SGX powering off by itself, also I get an error message "exception Notice' telling me to power cycle the unit.
also, sometimes it re-powers itself when I start to sync.
I have downloaded courses with Quick View or Hole View feature, when I pull up the courses on the SGX, they don't show up when I view the courses.

Looks like I'll have to wait until they get the bugs out, I know they put out an update late last night that I already downloaded.

On the Skygolf forums that issue was reported and an update was released. Sync your SGX and it should go away.

How did you allow the unsigned driver to be loaded in Win7 - 64 bit version?
Reboot your PC and press f8 when windows is loading. One of the boot up options will be to allow unsigned drivers (it's towards the bottom of the list). Select that and you should be good to go.

Just keep in mind, you have to do this every time you want to sync with your SGX. SkyCaddie needs to get on the ball and release a SIGNED driver.

I had the latest and greatest updates from Skycaddie in place, am getting those errors after the 'Update'.

Starting to feel like the SGX is the Windows Vista of SkyCaddies doesn't it? Rushed out incomplete after several delays... and customers have to suffer while they work it out. If you didn't know it already we are all part of the SGX beta test program...

$400 and you have to put up with random power resets and errors while syncing??? How could they not know these were problems?? They knew it and out it out anyway

My SGX is freezing with a "Exception Notice" message screen that keeps coming up after every reboot. Support is "suppose" to be working on fix....

SGX Lockup Update

Unfortunately, the factory loaded a wrong version of the Microsoft Windows CE operating system on the SGX. This incorrect version has created registry problems on the SGX, causing some customers to experience lockups or memory shortages.

Initially, we believed the problem was resolved by updating the OS to the correct version. While this helped, it has not eliminated the registry problem entirely. Our software engineers are committed to finding a resolution as quickly as possible, but the solution could be a day or two away.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We know you want to play with the SGX and thank you for your patience while we trace down this elusive bug.

A correct OS version will be posted as soon as possible. Please enter your email address below to receive notifications on the SGX software update (you can also bookmark http://clubsg.skygolf.com/sgxupdates). Once available, sync your SGX with CaddieSync to update it automatically.

Also, as a new product operating under Windows CE, it is possible to encounter occasional lockups similar to your PC. Should you encounter a system freeze, it will be recorded and uploaded to us the next time you connect for our engineers to evaluate. To reset your SGX, please press and hold the Power Button and the Joystick simultaneously until the display turns off.

Over the next several weeks, we expect to continue adding new functionality to your new SGX and will be posting additional software updates containing both new features and bug fixes as they are identified and corrected. We encourage all customers to take advantage of this free service by reconnecting from time to time via CaddieSync.

I went to play at a course with Hole Vue and got just the standard deal. Oh not only that but my SGX managed to freeze ohhh about 20 times....and on the 21st time it just stood frozen. This is the biggest waste of money I've spent in a long time. Absolutely TRASH. Bill Gates paying 1 billion dollars in Xbox replacements thinks the SGX is a let down. For all you guys who are thinking of upgrading stay put. Enjoy your working SG5.

Pretty BUMMED myself. I never buy a first model for at least 8 months or so but figured I would give it a shot with the sgx. Bad move , not only cant I sync up on my MAC but the cheap plastic cover on the usb port broke already FROM pulling it out carefully to charge the unit. The plastic on the tip were it goes in to the little hole basically ripped and now it just sticks out on the side . HORRIBLE. Good thing I didn't send in my sg5 yet for the rebate as this is going back to the store . I will wait a few months at least before I give it another shot if at all.

PS

It won't even turn on now .

FYI for all MAC and Windows users. I finally received my new SGX today from GPP Golf. Attempted to sync and register but had some of the same technical issues others mentioned. I simply contacted SkyGolf around 8:00pm EST and was only on hold for about 20 minutes. I finally got a tech n the line who said they have been working around the clock helping customers setup there new SGX and work out the kinks for all MAC and Windows users. The tech signed onto my MAC, worked some magic and finally got my SGX working fine after spending about 45 minutes with me. The tech made sure I could sync, load the same courses from my SG5. He also helped me unregister my SG5 so I could sell it to my friend. I remained calm and patient and gave them a chance to work out all of the issues.

The tech assured me they are standing 100% behind the SGX technical issues and they promised not to rest until everyone is 150% satisfied. After hearing that, I decided to pay the extra $19.95 for the extended warranty as peace of mind and I cant wait to buy the smart club tags when they come out. I am sure there will be some technical glitches as well but I don't care because I am a gadget ho and it will be worth the wait.

IMO I would simply exercise some patience and give them a chance to work out the bugs and I'm sure most SGX users will be very satisfied especially when they release these smart golf tags.

After all, there are much bigger problems in this world than my new SGX that didn't work the first time I turned it on.

exotics --

would be nice to hear some of the details/how the tech helped you, for those of us still screwed trying to synch with Macs. would be a big help and much appreciated. this problem seems to be widespread, among others. what ticks me off is that SkyCaddie MUST have known about the problem(s) and released the product to market anyway. it's bad business...

still hoping it's worth it in the end, but the unit i have right now is basically worthless, despite being advertised very clearly as Mac compatible. disappointing to say the least.

New SGX customer and lifetime Mac user here. I found the directions on the SGX to be cryptic and confusing on how to get this thing up and operational. Directions are not clear- which I found disappointing. In fact the whole registration process was confusing- Skygolf has you paying extra before you even get started! I bought the extended warranty because I had a sense that I might need the damn thing which isn't exactly a confidence booster. I bought the "birdie plan" even know I wasn't clear about how the plans work (or even if I need it). Anybody have insight or advice about the plans?

When I initially plugged it in- I was waiting for a battery icon to show it charging ( like it says I should see). Never did see it.
I learned that you need to turn off the SGX before you disconnect it from the usb cable- certainly an inconvenience compared to the iphone. So now what? I tried to figure out how to make it work- you know- a dry run- so I know how to operate it before I get to the course. No such feature. I guess I will figure it out.

Can an experienced skygolf user take us beginners thru a tutorial on how to operate this damn thing?
Thanks.
Tim

Well, I'm not experienced because I've never owned a SkyCaddie (my SGX arrives Tuesday). However, I do know that they have a demo mode to do exactly what you're describing. After a literally two minute search, I found the SGX user guide on SkyGolf's website.

Go to the user guide by clicking here (or just look in the one that came with your unit I suppose). Under section 4.2.1, it describes how to turn demo mode on so you can play any course you have loaded without actually being at the course.

Part of the problem here is that yes, lots of people have legitimate issues. But then you get problems that aren't problems at all, like the demo mode thing, because that functionality is included. People just haven't read the manual but they see other folks on the internet griping about something legit and they jump on board; mob mentality. I don't even own my SGX yet and I was able to determine this information.

And I still don't understand at this day and age how people can expect to buy the first version of a gadget and not have issues. These tech companies (Apple, Palm, HTC, SkyGolf) get pressured from people to release something because they hear "what's the f'n delay?" So, they release a product that is mostly ready but needs a few software tweaks and those same people scream "I'm not a beta tester, my device isn't flawless, I want my money back!"

Like it or not, our impatience creates inadequate v1.0 products. If you don't want to deal with being patient and allowing the company to work through some bugs, don't buy a first version product. And by god, please stop whining on the internet; especially if you haven't done your own research first.

It's tiresome.

As a person that has written software for over 30 years, you test it the best you can. You can test it and test it but when you have 10,000 people instead of 50 people using it, they will use it ways that you never expected and tested for and problems will come up. As I expected, this is a Windows product and their first product with Windows. Instead of just enhancing software for hardware that has more capabilities, this is a rewrite of the whole software. Problems are going to occur.

And here is another fact. If you cry, bellyache, and complain about the problems, your issue will be put to the end of the line. If you act civil, calm, and work with people, you will get your problem addressed much quicker. Programmers and support people are humans. Treat them with respect, they will respect you and work for you. Disrespect them and they will not work for you.

I had some initial problems getting my SGX to sync but I worked through them without contacting tech support. I sold my
SG5 on Ebay about a week ago. I agree with the previous posters, there will be some bugs but from what I have seen SkyGolf
is not sticking their heads in the sand. They are being very responsive. I love SkyCaddie!

Lol perhaps this post should be put to the front of the other posts. I got my SGX and it was not perfect but I was able to finally get it to work. This is not perfect but it is far from being a worst product ever to be released candidate. Skygolf at least seems to be working pretty hard to fix all the issues that have come up so lets give them some time. Just like any other company I am sure they were pressured by the money men to get this product out the door.

So I've been using the SG3 for the last 3 years and decided to upgrade this year as the SG3 was starting to act up a little bit. I loved everything I saw about the SGX and decided I just had to have it. Like most everybody else, I've had some problems getting things started. Partly because of the software issues (windows vista 64 bit SP2 didn't like the unsigned drivers but there a already a bunch of workarounds posted on the skygolf forum and they DO work) and partially because when it came time do register the new SGX, I stopped reading the start up guide and jumped way ahead of myself and messed things up royally! (read operator error.)

Even through all of that, I was able to get my SGX ready for play within about 2 hours of recieving it in the mail. I'm not the most computer savy (read firefighter) but still was able to manage with the help of lot's of your posts here and on the skygolf forum>>Thank you all.

I had to work on the medical helo last night then had a chicago style tournament this morning. When I got to the course this morning after flying all night, I turned on my SGX and everything started up just fine. Then I selected the course and what to my surprise, the course I was going to play that wasn't Hole View mapped last week must have been mapped in the last 3 days and when I loaded all of my courses it was uploaded to the SGX. Now for a minute when that beautiful hole view screen popped up I thought I was just punch drunk from lack of sleep. I was so excited.

The SGX performed just perfectly. No hickups or anything. I've played this course a ton of times and there are a couple of holes that always give me problems. Now using the Hole View I know why. I was able to see that a couple of the areas that I hit driver put my landing zone right in the narrowest part of the fairway. I guess I always probably knew this, but with the zoom feature and interactive hole view, I can move the cursor and figure out what distance might give me a safer landing zone AND what my next shot will have to be distance wise.

Everybody try and be patient. THis is not the first time we've had problems with early release electronics. THe iphone had terrible start up problems and we all know about the microsoft curse everytime they send out a new release. Heck, I bet if you do everything step by step as the manual says on the SGX from charging it using the wall charger the first time and move methodically down the list 80% of the problems would be solved. But I know most of us are too impatient to do that right?

Anyway, be as patient as you can. THis is going to get good. It really is!!!

Hit em long and straight.

And about posting your scores, the SGX like all of the other scoring enabled skycaddies will hold 10 saved rounds. You have to have scoring turned on in the menu, and have to tell it you want it to be a saved round at the beginning of the round. After you are done playing, the next time you sync your skycaddie, it will automatically download and erase from the memory the saved rounds. You then start over with 10 round fresh capacity.

I've played a few rounds now with the SGX. Overall I'm pretty satisfied. I wish the courses I have been playing had a few more features, but other than that, I find it to be very accurate and I love the intelligreen feature. I've had it freeze one me a couple times, but I just did a soft restart and all was well. Still can't sync on my mac, but I know they'll have that remedied soon.
