What to work on?

This is a buddy of mine, His plane looks pretty good, hes a little stuck though (normally draws it, probbaly misses right too much). Plus has some weird spine crunch at impact. What kind of drills would be good for him?

You can call it me if you want, presonally I like the swing, most of it anyways. My initial thought is to try to get him to work on his posture. Too bent over and away from the ball. Pivot needs work. Early exends a little. CLubface is a little closed, not bad though. Swings too far in to out and flippy at release, the pivot work could help that. Right leg starightens probbaly too much. Did I miss anything? Guess a face on would help too.

He does have a hunched impact/head dip, kind of a Charles Barkley more than Tiger Woods thing.

The only thing I've ever seen is like Hank Haney did, just stand in front of him and hold his head while he swings.

Many great golfers have a compression move towards the ball through the downswing. Jim Mclean even wrote about it in the 8 step swing. You'll also see it from guys like Rory Mcilroy and of course Tiger. It's not necisarily a fault on its own, and can be a power generator because it allows an upward thrust of the hips through impact, but can cause problems if overdone. If you put a stright edge on his club plain, you'll see that his backswing is above it, which is not an issue and looks good. It's this compression motion that in fact brings the club down back onto the original club plane.

Yes, his club face is shut, but I'd really like to see his grip. It looks like the club isn't setting itself naturally which makes me think there could be grip issues. Maybe a little to much in the hand?

As for the release, I wouldn't guess at it without a front view. There are a few tweaks that might help, but things look really good to me.

That makes sense thenewbie. I know he use to flip badly, not sure how bad now, like you said its harder to tell with that dtl vid. I'll get a face on soon.

Backswing looks really good (although personally, I don't care much for a bowed left wrist at the top) but in the downswing he stalls his pivot and "humps the goat" a bit and throws his hands at the ball with a flippy/crossover release. This causes the thoracic spine compression so that he can get down to the ball. Lots of very good players have played this way (he reminds me a bit of Vijay) but it's far from ideal, IMO and requires great hand/eye coordination and timing to keep the ball in play. Misses are likely to be on both sides of the course with a wide dispersion pattern. If he really wants to work on his swing, I'd say he needs to work on clearing his left hip better on the downswing and maintain some right wrist bend through impact. Slicefixer's version of the 9-3 drill would be good for him.

Well its real simple...he's got a closed face, with a cf path...In other words, the face is closed to the path which is inside out...Hook city, and pushes...

Get the face more neutral and the path more in line... everything else is just style points, on the road to get there...

Good analysis guys. Like I said my intial thought is to focus on the pivot work after the setup issues/ possibly grip are fixed. Then work on his release, was thinking of some impact bag work. He's a pretty good junior player at my home course. Trying to help him out, he wants to play college D1.
