What do you eat/drink during a round?

Recommended Posts

to keep your energy up!
Just wondering what everyone eats and drinks during their round in order to maintain energy for 18. My goal is to feel the same on the first hole as the last, which starts with my conditioning, but fuel plays a large part too. I'm a walker and carrier also. So whatcha munchin' on at the links? Specifics are definitely welcome

I walk and carry.

In my bag will be a 1L water bottle (will carry an additional 1L if it is hot out). I used to have individual Crystal Light packets to add to the water but it got messy.

For food I either have a baggie of mixed nuts (raw almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts) or a protein bar (I like the Premier Nutrition bars from Costco). Also, I'll carry some fruit; typically raisins, dried apricots, or a banana.

I carry packets of Amino Vital. It can be added to water or your favorite sports drink. It provides amino acids to your muscles to keep them from feeling fatigued. The stuff is great and widely used across all sports.

I buy it at a store called Vitamin Shoppe, but it can be found many, many places.

If it's a serious round i try to keep it healthy and light: water or gatorade and trail mix/fruit.

If it's for fun with the fellas: lots of beer, cigarettes, and whatever at the snack shack.

Always have a good supply of these in the bag:

Might pack one of these:

I also always have a mixture of dried fruit, nuts, trail mix, etc. in my bag to munch on and stay heavily hydrated (especially at altitude) with a mix of water, Gatorade powder which provides carbs from sugar and electrolytes, and BCAA/amino acids.

If I can stop at the turn and pick up a chicken wrap or something decent, I will do that as well.

Hope this helps. It's from a fitness article I read awhile back ...

Importance of Staying Hydrated and Nourished during a Round
by Mike Malaska

You're in the middle of the back nine; you have a great round going or you're in position to win an important match and ... all of a sudden you start to notice your concentration is a little off. You're a little nervous. You're tightening up and your swing is getting quicker. You start hitting bad shots. You begin to press. Your mind races. And the last three or four holes turn into a disaster.

Does this sound familiar?

Your first instinct when this happens is to blame your fundamentals or call yourself a choking dog. In reality, there might be major issues at work that could be avoided.

Two potential issues are hydration and blood-sugar level. And their importance is huge.

The major signs of dehydration are muscle fatigue, muscle tightness and poor concentration. This is not good on the golf course or anywhere else for that matter. If you are dehydrated and your body gets in a crisis mode, your body has an option: It can focus on the task at hand - making a 3-foot putt or hitting a tee shot you need to hit - or it can focus on staying alive.

Needless to say, your body will tend to focus more on staying alive. Your body wants to focus on trying to make sure that it gets you through the round. That's why staying hydrated is so important.

Meanwhile, if you eat sugary foods or high fat foods, you get "spiked." And that will play havoc with your blood sugar level, which should be kept at an even level. In other words, if somebody ingests a candy bar or a soft drink at the turn - even if they feel good at No. 10 or No. 11, they'll drop severely in blood-sugar level about the 13th hole. You can't continue to eat sugar, sugar, sugar and think that the blood sugar level is going to stay up there. At some point, your blood sugar level will crash. So the key becomes preparation, and that starts before the round. It takes about 48 hours to hydrate yourself. It also takes about 2 1/2 to 3 quarts of water per day, if you're not active, just to maintain normal body function. If you don't get that fluid intake, your body will pull fluids from the fluids already in the body.

This is a very unappealing thought when you consider that your body, among other things, will recycle urine in your system. Your body also will pull fluids from your muscle system, which is why you tighten up and get fatigued.

If somebody's playing golf, they probably need up to a gallon of water during their day to keep their hydration level up. And you can't hydrate yourself just when you get to the course because it takes about 48 hours.

Once you get thirsty, it's too late. You're already in a crisis mode. Thirst is a warning signal going off, saying, "You're about to go down here." At that point, drinking water because you're thirsty will help you, but it will not rehydrate you on the spot.

Caffeinated beverages and alcohol are diuretics. They dehydrate you. The best thing is still water, which can't be underrated. Every time you pass a drinking fountain, take a drink. If the golf cart has water, take a cup every hole so you're constantly replenishing your fluids.

There's a lot of information out there on blood sugar level. Without getting too complicated, bananas and apples are good. Oranges have a lot of fructose, which tends to spike you up and down. Peanuts have protein.

But the key thing is to eat those natural fruits and whole grains, and to take them consistently. Don't pound a whole sandwich down, then not eat for a few holes. You want to be eating a little bit each hole so your blood sugar stays at a constant level.

The best morning foods, before you get to the course, are whole-grain cereals with some fruit. Whole grains and fruit stay with you a long time. For lunch, eat things like whole grain breads, tuna and chicken.

If you do this and continually hydrate yourself, all of a sudden you may find yourself playing the 18th hole with a lot more energy, better concentration and a much better outcome.

I don't really pack for the course. I don't drink alcohol on the course really either, so usually water or gatorade. As far as eating goes, same as any other day...whatever I feel like eating. I definitely would never pack an energy bar, fruit or nuts though, I never noticed things like that giving me any more or less energy then if I just eat a hot dog.

Early morning rounds:

Pre-round: Egg white omelet with fat free cheese, spinach and fat free turkey, mixed bowl of cereal (fiber one and bran flakes) and about 1/2 pot of coffee.

During round: I pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on 100% whole wheat...if available, I'll chop up a banana so it's a Peanut Butter, Banana and Jelly sandwich (SO GOOD!!!). Generally speaking, I'll eat it at the turn unless I'm starved. My playing partners will always call out the PB&J and just nod their head in approval when I confirm.

I also pack a Nature Valley granola bar just in case I get hungry on the back nine. Also, I ALWAYS have a bottle of water.

Evening rounds:

Usually only need a granola bar and a breakfast bar and of course a bottle of water.

I used to do protein bars, etc..., but I hate the mess of melted chocolate during the summer. Clif bars are good, but they get pricey if you play a lot of golf. I found that a granola bar will quell my hungry just as well and is much cheaper.

I usually go with fruit. I tend to eat a banana before I hit the course, I throw an apple in the golf bag, I drink a crapload of water. . .I also have some digestive disorders--dehydration is very bad for me!! Bad for anybody, but causes me some pain. Anyway

Y-day I was starving and had a chicken salad s-wich from the clubhouse and a G2 drink.

I WILL NEVER EAT A HOTDOG FROM A GOLF COURSE AGAIN! Bad experience last year, I won't trust those junkymeatlinks ever again.

Occasionally I will grab an energy bar
