SST Pure Installation question

hey guys, I received my Axiv Green Pured shaft yesterday. Plan to install into my Cobra ZL this weekend.

 

Have a question though. From the SST Pure website, it says the following:

 

"It is important to align the arrow at directly 12 o’clock in the hosel. Do not align it with the leading edge of the clubface. "

 

A bit confused here. how do you measure where 12 o'clock in the hosel is? isn't that essentially the leading edge of the clubface?

The arrow on the shaft pointing down toward the head is what gets aligned to 12 or on top of the shaft. Try a dry fit first to get the feel. Set the shaft in the head, then sole the club. The arrow should be at 12, as in on the top of the shaft. If a loose fit, the head may wiggle all about. Now that you have a feel for where it goes, epoxy it up. Some shafting beads in the epoxy will make for a snug fit to be able to aling the mark. Be sure all stays aligned while the epoxy cures.

Wow, that is confusing wording. How would you know where 12 o'clock is if you don't use the leading edge as reference? Perhaps they are worried about people who have offset clubs placing the arrow pointing at where the leading edge meets the hosel? In any case, I would assume 12 o'clock is a line parallel to the leading of the the clubface and bisecting the circular hosel.

Let me try again.:

1. Insert the shaft into the hosel.

2. Stand at address, letting the club head sole itself on the ground.

3. From this address position, look down the shaft. The arrow should be at 12noon (top of the shaft) as you look down the shaft. If it is not, twist a bit and repeat step 2 and 3.

This is for a right handed golfer.

How can I make it any simpler?

This is correct. Look at it this way: SST, FLO, etc is a way to align the shaft so it behaves properly/repeatably in the swing. SST and some other methodologies do not even use a head when being tested/setup. Some use a 200gram weight to simulate the head weight, but not any use the head.

Bottom line is forget the face angle, offset, etc.

I just recently picked up a used sst pured shaft.
I do not have an arrow pointing down the shaft but it does have a sst pure sticker on there.
How do i know which way the shaft is suppose to go in?
Does anybody know?

The arrow on the shaft is in there usually either in marker on a piece of masking tape is stuck on with the mark on it. It's a reference only (same as when you spine a shaft). You mark it with something you can remove. Once installed, you remove it and if applicable, apply the shaft band. Depends on who's doing the puring/spining and the shaft's material as to how they mark it.

As for orientation, 12 o'clock is always toward the toe (or the mark is on top(think of the shafts main graphics being the spine for illustration purposes)). In the 12 o'clock position, the spine/pure line (or for our illustration, the club's graphics) is on top and visible at address. When looking down at the club from address, 3 is always directly opposite the target from the leadig edge and 9 is always toward the target from the leading edge. 6 is always down, directly opposite the topline. Look down at address along the topline. The topline is 12 and orientation follows a clock face.

Assuming the shaft didn't come with a ZL tip, make sure you account for the tip when you do all this too. I'm sure you already thought of it, but just wanted to make sure. Are you planning on playing the club in the neutral/open/closed position? Just something to think about.

Not like the shaft will be unplayable if you change it from one setting to the other, but still...

Under the grip there should be a SST Label/Sticker with an arrow pointing down the shaft. This is applied when the shaft is SST Pured. If no label with the arrow, I doubt the shaft was SST Pured even if there is a shaft label on it.
