"The Honeymoon" Taylormade SUPERFAST TP....a novel-

Metalhead

Recommended Posts

first I have not been looking for a new driver for the last several season since I have been very happy with Adams 9015d- and in all honesty most/all other drivers I have hit during this time- regardless of cost, sound, spin, looks etc.... just never gave me any appreciable distance gains....which is afterall the real point to replacing the big dog....isn't it?....

Now when it comes to drivers, the one thing I will look to change is the shaft more so that the head- if I what to change dispertion, distance and or right bias etc... So in my 9015d I have changed the shafts several times from the original Matrix 60-x, to the Matrix HD6x, and finally the the TP7HD....all of these changes were progressive improvement in a variety of ways- but I have been very content with the 9015d head through and though.....thats not to say when I do drop my the range or golf shop I do pick up the latest and greatest to try out...just to see if perhaps the grass is just a little greener on the otherside...

I will say that when I was told about the new SuperDeep coming out I was quite interested in it to say the least! In fact, for the first time in a longtime I very nearly just bought without even hitting just cause it spoke Deep Face/Low Spin etc.... but I didn't(partially due the the price tag), however it did inspire me to pick up a TP7HD pull for my dearly trusted 9015d- which is an awesome combo!

....ok longer story-shorter.......I have been reading all the driver posts recently...especially on the SD(as I had still not hit it!)...so I was in the golf shop earily this week and as soon as I walked in the Tech says to me- "hey Josh- we just got the SD demo in, want to hit it!"??...."well yeah, sure...let me warm up first"...So I finally got to hit the SD- I really liked, ball flight, sound look etc... but it wasn't really any longer than my current driver 9015d, so I packed up and was starting to leave the shop and I saw the Superfast TP's on the rack- Of course I asked the Tech to tape up one of the SFTP's so I could whack a couple with just to say I had if nothing else...the closest of the rack combo that I thought would be a decent comparison was a 8.5 with HD6 Stiff......I teed it up and proceed to hit about 30 balls with this combo. I instantly loved the sound and feel, but didn't really like the head shape or length of the shaft- but I was seeing for the first time in a very long time DISTANCE GAINS- in the range of 5-15yds! Wow! Impressed! (BTW- these are seat of the pants observations, as there was no Trackman and just some crappy range balls too)....but it was still obvious of the distance difference.

I was Hooked at this point- I liked the ball flight, as I though it as pretty good even thou the shaft was too weak and too long(I was gripping down about 1.5", and I found that the SF TP was still workable left, right high and low but just not quite as much action as say my 9015d---- which was not necessary a bad thing. I left the shop with some burning questions I needed answered..."If I reshafted shorted and correct flex, would I still see the distance gains?" "Could I get it to SW correctly without hampering and effecting the ball flight?" And "how quickly, could I find the right combo, or should I just order it custom as I wanted it?"

After about an hour on the phone/internet....I decided to just go buy the one I had hit earlier and start the reshaft/reweighting process to see- Well I ended up dropping in a HD6x tipped 1/2" at 44.5" with 3 strips of lead tape on the sole......

I never went to the range to see if this worked out right or not, instead I went to my scheduled 4some at 3pm on Thursday and teed it up, here are the results: of 11 driver holes, I had 5 drives over 300yds (308,307,311,301,305) another 3 drives were just shy of the 300 mark and the other 3 drives I didn't mark (one I hit a tree trying to cut a dogleg, another was OB by 6 inches and the other was low stinger at about 275). Now let me qualify this some- as I have driven 300 yards many times, but never with this consistency and accurate in one round...the thing that impressed me most was the carry was clearly longer in every drive and how easy the SF was to hit well! and even without the ultimate control shaft (TP7HD) the Superfast was point and shoot- call shot style- high draw:Yes, High fade:Yes, dead straight: yes- impressive!

Anyway- sorry for all the details and length of this post, but I felt inspired to share....don't be shocked to see my beloved 9015d/TP7HD in the BST soon! The SuperFast TP is that good, at least for me at this time!

Great review. I could have sworn that i wrote some of that stuff as I had the same exact experience as far as going to the demo day to hit the Superdeep but ending up loving the Superfast TP.

I would love to know what loft you were playing in your 9015d as I am thinking of picking up one of these to mess sround with but can't decide between the 8.5 and 9.5. The spin seemed to be low from the trajectory but I might benefit from going to the 8.5 for even lower spin as this launches higher than the 9015d.

Nice post Metal. How was the ball flight with the stock 8.5 setup compared to the shorter length/shaft combo?

good question- this was one of my concerns too when I went to reshaft and shorten, as I thought maybe because of the height I was getting with the stock set up was an attribute of the head and not just the shaft....but my fears were quickly dissipated once I reshafted and the ball flight came down some and arched out more. It was actually a good comparison as I just went up in flex with the same shaft, to it was clear to me that the head is not spinning in this case. I would encourage everyone to put their favorite flavor shaft in this head and give it a whirl!

Thanks for the write-up Josh !!!!

Robo- thanks, but I have to give you the credit for opening pandora's box of the whole Superfast phenomenon - without your posts here I might not have even hit this head!

I was in GG this morning and was watching an older gentleman hitting G15's of varying lofts on the monitor. His best swings were getting out to 200 on the roll. I mentioned the SuperFast TP to the GG guy, not thinking of having the older fella try it. Well the GG guy went and got it and was taping it up for me... when he realized it was RH (I already knew the club was RH before I even mentioned it, didn't realize he thought I wanted to hit it). So standing there, he had a lightbulb go off in his head and decided to have the older guy hit it. Dude hit the first one 205 carry. His eyes lit up. 10 swings later, and even bad mishits ending up past the G15, the guy bought the SF.

Made me chuckle, nice looking club though. :)

Great reveiw ... I've been avoiding trying this club (mainly because I know I'll buy it and the last thing I need is another driver). I have a 09 Burner TP 8.5º that I love and have my doubts that the Superfast TP could be that much better.

But, with all this Superfast praise going on, I am having trouble resisting this club.

Anyone directly compare the Superfast TP to the 09 Burner TP?

(from May 13)
I have a SFTP 10.5/ Aldila RIP 60X @ 44.5 D3
I was using the 09 Burner TP/VooDoo @ 44.5 D3 for the last 18 months.
This is a way different club, first it is all titanium with
a muted sound and more solid feel than the 09 version.
This set up is sick, I am not sure if it is the shaft
or the head that makes the difference.
I never even hit the stock set up, it was a Fubuki w/ TM graphics....
I know last week it was cool and wet and I flew it 285 into a headwind
with a soft cut --- with very little effort. The RIP is very-very stable
even at the mid 60 gram range. It is STOOPID LONG. Everyone that has hit
this says that the face feels very lively and they want to keep on hitting it.
Fun club and safe and sound in the bag.

Where did you get a Superfast TP with a stock fubuki?

I'm counting on it! Mine with Fubuki 73X should be in hand next Friday. Looking forward to giving it a spin up next to the FT Tour.

Guys, I'm gonna give the SuperFast TP a shot... I'm currently playing the 9015D w/ Kai'li 60s shaft and loving the combo. Which shaft should I get on the SF TP, TM Aldila R.I.P. or Mitsubishi TP Fubuki 63-TM? Also, stiff or regular flex, my driver swing speed is just a bit over 100. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

^^^ This

I am curious as to which shaft to give a run. I play the original Superfast with a Motore 65 and love it, but the appeal of a slightly more open head with my natural draw makes me interested. I was going to go RIP based on comments but should I consider Fubuki instead? My swing speed is about 105-107.

OK- Rounds 2 and 3 in books with the SF TP...guys I gotta say this is a keeper! I wasn't swinging quite as well, but the results were right there in both the last two rounds....it really changes holes when you are bringing one or even 2 irons less into the holes! love it....

My buddy..Swanry(Ryan) just left me a message...said "yep you are right on the money with the SF, I was just demoing with Trackman and I was getting 7 mph faster with SF...over my driver (FT Tour and J33r) and the SD...I'm getting one Stock, stock with the HDX at 46!"
**Now I'm thinking I should not have been soo generous about disclosing my results with the SF...or least I could held out a bit longer so I could have blown it by him a few times just to get into his a head a bit! lol..oh well!****

Today I was in places I had never been before on my home course of 8 years! And I don't mean left or right in the woods. Down the fairway like I couldn't believe! Playing partners could not believe how long this club is........And I don't mean it being 46".........

Still waiting for mine to come in the mail (10.5 SFTP w/ Fubuki 63x @ 45.25") :(

From my experience when I was getting fit on a launch monitor, I was getting about 5 mph extra ball speed with identical swing speed numbers using the stock 10.5 SFTP with the HD6 stiff compared to my r7 460 TP. Couldnt hit the HD6 for the life of me but the ball speed numbers were great no matter where you hit it on the face. Cannot wait for it come in and play a round with it.

I found the Regular to be a little on the soft soft side, but I generate a lot of torque. I would recommend hitting both. The stiff feels better to me.
