Looking to try irons better for my game
Hey all, I need some advice!

I am not new to the game as I play several times each summer, but I am not very good with scores widely averaging between 93ish-108ish. I like to think I have a lot of raw talent, but I may be padding my ego. My main problem is like that of many, inconsistency. As an example, yesterday I played 9. On the final hole, a par 5, I nutted a 3 iron 240ish yards onto the green for a long eagle shot. Swing felt great, strike was pure. However, on the hole before my two iron shots on approach were not hit well and didn't feel good on the hands. I make a lot of great shots each round, I just can't string enough of them together for a decent score.

I know I need lessons, as I really have no idea what I am doing. I know a few typical fundamentals, but not enough to fix specific and consistent problems. I also think my irons aren't helping and might not be the best for me.

I bought them from a club pro because frankly they were a great deal and I wasn't going to find anything better....and I didn't really know what I was doing. The irons are MP-32 Tour Edition(supposedly?) from Mizuno with Project X shafts, at 6.0 I believe. I love them, and when I make a good swing and have a pure strike they feel soooo goooood. Yet, I know I could probably play something better, or atleast fitted for me better!

I do not want so called 'game improvement' irons, I want something that will still be a bit of a challenge and something I can grow into skill wise. I feel like when I get some good instruction and start playing more I'd quickly descend down to an average of 90. I usually have 5-8 pars per 18 and a few birdies, I just have a lot of blow up holes to go with them.

I want to stay forged, because there's nothing better than that buttery feeling, but I think a cavity-style forged would help me a bit. Here's the other kicker...I can't afford to buy anything new and am hoping to stay near the same value of my current clubs so I don't have to pay much out of pocket. I'm going to try and get out to demo some stuff, but would appreciate yalls expert advice and thanks for reading if you made it all the way through!

Your game sounds a lot like mine. I had the MP52s (players cavity backs) but just traded those in for some MX200s. Love forged and love Mizuno. 200s should arrive this week.

You mentioned you'd like your irons to "still be a bit of a challenge". Before my 52s, I had a similar perspective. However, I've changed that to one where I want to enjoy playing my irons (which is not just score, but feel, look, etc.). I don't mind if the irons are bit bigger - although I don't like huge offset and extremely think toplines or soles. The 200s fit these criteria and are definitely GI, but are not SGI. The 300s are also great irons, but are really more players clubs so I opted for a bit more forgiveness as the 300s aren't much different from the 52s.

Anyway, if you try the 200s, try them with the KBS Tour shaft. Fantastic shaft! A lot of people do like the XP as well...I just strongly preferred the KBS - found it smoother/softer feeling. Also, ball flight was better for me (not as high as the XP).

Good luck!

My wants were exactly yours when I was demoing clubs this year. Then I checked my ego at the door and hit some GI shovels. They instantly went from ugly to beautiful. Go hit some Ping G5s or something similar before you decide you know exactly what you want. I think some of the Adams late model stuff can be had pretty cheaply.

What I wanted certainly changed for me through actual use. I was convinced I wanted MP-57s from the looks and hitting them off mats in the store, but easily ended up with the Ping G15s after a grass range session. Likewise, I thought the G15 hybrid was perhaps the Pontiac Aztek of golf. After hitting it....well, you better kill me if you want to take it away.

Great analogy...so true! cheesy.gif

Fortunatley for Ping, the G15 hybrid drives better than the Aztek. :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm definitely going to try and move to something closer to my skill level. I still LOVE these irons, but the pure shots don't come often enough. Yesterday I nutted a 7 iron about 200 and it was beautiful, but the rest of the round wasn't so fortunate :-(

I guess I will be looking to demo some stuff soon.

MX 200's all the way!

Agree! They feel like forged when you pure it, but they are very forgiving. Do not get the newer Mx 300, the difference between those and the 200 are very little. Mx 200 are deffinetly the best club for you IMO

Just got my MX200s in and had first range session off grass...very happy! On top of it, they just went on sale at Roger Dunn for $599 4-GW. Was a pleasant surprise when I traded in my 52s!
