Playing better as weight increases
It looks like Christie Kerr is like Mark Calcavecchia, Billy Casper, Craig Stadler and others that have lost a ton of weight only to find their games disappeared with the weight... She is obviously creeping back to the old Christie Kerr and her game seems to be improving... I played golf in college with a really big guy who was a great golfer (no.1 or no. 2). I saw him several years later and he had lost something like 70 pounds and looked very healthy but he couldn't play a lick.. A month ago my brother sent me a article about this guy winning some amateur event and in the picture he obviously had put the weight back on plus a few more---but the game was back.. Strange how much the body can impact your game. Darren Clarke seems to be playing better lately as well, since he put the weight back on as well...

Plus at least she is one good american golfer out there since Paula Creamer seems to be a constant medical disaster (gastrointestinal, thumb, wrist, etc. etc.), Morgan Pressel can't compete length wise, and Michelle Wie doesn't appear to be improving at all..

Opps wrong forum, swore I put this in the LPGA forum..

I had problems playing when I dropped a bunch of weight at once in the off season. I dropped 40 lbs over winter and when I got back to playing again.. all of my rhythm and shots were off quite a bit. I was just used to swinging around my self.

It's not as big of deal now that I am getting used to it.

Back in 2002/3, I lost 80 pounds, went from almost 260 to under 180, and it did goof my game, that's when I got the shanks, I think it really changed my center of gravity, and there was nothing on my side as I came down to "guide" my arms..... But it was after I had gained about 20-30 "new" pounds....

Unfortunately, I've now gained all the weight back, peaking this winter at what I maxed out in early 2002, I must say my game has been really as good as it ever has been the past few years playing at 230-245, but I think at my max I am just too heavy, I'm dying in the NC summer heat the past few weeks. I did play well in my 20's after dropping weight from about 230 down to 195/200 and really working out, I would like to get down closer to 200 again and see how it impacts my game...

Yeah she was lighting it up today... I don't think she necessarily played bad when she was thinner...didn't she win the US Open during that timeframe? Seems like she was thin for 3-5 years and is slowly gaining some of it back. Hitting what some call her "married weight". (Sorry gals, no harm intended :). I actually think she looks better with a bit more "curviness" in her figure.

She played pretty damn good a few years ago when she was a little slimmer but there was that Annika lady always finishing ahead of her. Nonetheless she's been playing great and I love seeing an American have a chance to be number one in the world. Not a knock on the overseas talent but I am patriotic I guess.

No doubt that the phenomenon occurs, but I don't think it applies here. She was obviously a great amateur and collegiate player. She never won an LPGA event until after she lost all of the weight. She had her 3 best years between 2004 and 2006 with 8 total victories, at a time when she was very thin.

she's definitely heavier than a couple of years ago. She does look like she lost a couple of pounds. It affects everyone. I lost about 20 lbs and 20 lbs in the past year or so. from 285 to 265. Hitting the gym and the distance is starting to come back. Feel better and putting better now that the gut is out of the way.

Cristie played pretty good when her weight was lower and is playing pretty good with her current weight. I think all of us have gained weight as we got older. And she is still looking good.

She looked better and played better several years ago when she was thinner.

Losing weight is one of the greatest tips toward more successful golf. It's comical that swing thoughts and alignment and whatever are always emphasized when the topic shows up, as opposed to simply getting in shape. People want to believe it's not important, and often the reverse shows up, rationalizations like earlier in this thread, that added weight is actually beneficial. LOL. For every time that's true there will be numerous examples of the opposite, to the point it's almost like the guy who scrambled to find the one doctor who advocates smoking.

I learned quickly as a handicapper not to pretend I could force the 20-40% categories as opposed to consistently putting myself in the advantage scenarios and taking my chances. Gaining weight is not the answer. It may camouflage decline for a while. I'd love to bet that Tiger could recapture form more quickly and dependably if he had his 2000 physique as opposed to today's.

  • 3 months later...

Recently her game seems to be a little erratic and she seems to look a little wider with a bit more of a bulge (more than her recent figure). I wonder if she is pregnant and is causing her seeming loss of putting touch and she is hitting some odd shots now and then? Nothing to base this on but she has said that she wants to have kids and the clock is ticking and the off-season is right around the corner. It would seem to be a good time to have a child and then be back for the early part of the year.
