Chopping the shaft. Effects?

I have an SVS6 TP shaft that I dont use in my R9 driver anymore, and was curious if I cut the butt down to the same length of my current Motore 3w shaft would it make a solid gamer in my 3wood?

Also what would be the effects? I want something a little lighter than the 70G shaft thats in there, and want something a little stiffer. I assume cutting it down will make it a little stiffer. Correct?

Cutting it from the butt end won't make it any stiffer. It could possibly change your swingweight of the club. Since your using a different gram shaft. Once you tip trim and cut the butt down to adjust the length of any club. It changes the balance point. You can take two different name brand shafts that are both say 65g "R" flex. And each ones center of balance may be different.

When installing most shafts into a 3 wood you need to trim from the tip a certain amount. For the SVS6 the trim code is F, which according the the chart below, from the Aldila website, means you need to trim 1" from the tip then trim to length from the butt. Because you're using a lighter shaft than normal your swingweight will be different than standard. That may or may not be an issue. You can add weight if needed to get the SW back to near normal.

How much more stiff do you think this will make that shaft? Taking an inch off the tip?

I think the profile of the shaft stays the same because you will be putting it into a 3 wood head, whereas if you tipped it an inch and then put it back into your driver head it would become stiffer, Im not 100 percent about this though, I'm learning as well lol

It wont feel stiffer in a 3 wood because the weight of the head is more, thus the need to tip the shaft. If you did not tip it, it would actually play softer because of the heavier head weight.

Since they are both R9 heads, put the shaft as-is into the 3 wood and give it a few swings. You might have to choke down a bit, but you may end up liking it without making any changes.

Yeah, so Im hoping this straightens ball flight out a little and plays similar to the flight i had in my driver. Maybe stiffer.. Either way just want to experiment with it and see how it turns out.

I took 1 1/2" off my driver now, all i can say is thank God that the R7 has swappable weights, because my swing weight was super jacked... it was sitting at C7 after the cut, back up to D3.
