I just played this course a week ago and I really enjoyed it. The greens were fast and true, I wish the fairways were a bit firmer and not so green. I got out right at 3pm ($45) and with my rented Cobra Irons and bulls eye putter ($25) I played 27 holes in 2 hours & 45 minutes. My brother lives there and said I should play it before it goes out of business. I thought the front 9 was forgettable, but the back 9 played like real links golf and had some really fun holes. The Mango towels every couple of holes were lifesavers as it was over 95. If they do ever build the homes around the course like they have planned, it will ruin the appeal to me, but me help save a few balls that end up in the super thick bush rough full of jack rabbits.

Nice job Port A!

It is my favorite course. It is absolutely beautiful and I like the front 9 almost as much as the back. It can be brutal though. Most of the time, the winds are around 20 mph or more. Plus, there is no rough so if you just barely get off the fairway, your ball is out of bounds and you can pretty much forget about finding it in the thick vegatation in the dunes. The greens are very fast and true. Often times the greens are 12-14 on the stimp. However, since they went into bankruptcy the course is not as nice and lush as it used to be. It is still a great place to play, but a year ago it was the best manicured course I have ever seen in my life! Playing in the evening is my favorite time because the sunsets in the dunes are amazing.

I played the Dunes last week and it was in fantastic shape. The wind was a steady 20-25 but it didn't take away from the enjoyment. I hope it doesn't go away any time soon or, worse yet, start building around the course. IMO, not having to wind through endless houses/condos is what makes the course unique. Some of the holes along the water are reminiscent of a links course in scotland/ireland....really nice design. The use of the dunes and the mounding around the greens is great.....a shot off the green can turn out to be really good or really bad depending on how it hits.

As long as it remains open, I'll try to make it down there as often as I can. Great track at a great price. :clapping:

Not nearly enough traffic to sustain such a course in South Texas. I think the developers over-estimated potential visitors. Other than fishing, that area offers very little in terms of being a tourist destination. For lack of a better term, PA isn't much more than a redneck riviera for fisherman who would like nothing better than to see the course close down. There's very little else to attract ANYONE to that area, it's very depressed and doesnt' exactly attract the "golfer" demographic, which begs the question, why build there in the first place???.

It really is a shame because it's a fantastic course and the half dozen times I've played it, the conditions have been immaculate.

Great course, reminds me somewhat of Kiva Dunes in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Hope they find some way to make it out of Bankruptcy.
I think they will. Port A is an neat town that is really coming along. Its very artsy and not the redneck riveria it used to be. And that is coming from someone that has lived all over including LaJolla, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Ann Arbor, San Diego and LA. Port A is coming around and I think will continue to do so. It is a great and cheap destination for Texans from the larger metro areas.

Absolutley the most manicured course I've ever played! I mean, even the grass in tee boxes was immaculate.

We travel to Port A every year and I will definitely make plans to play this course again next year. I have a score to settle with it as it got the best of me this year! The wind and the dune vegetation "rough" beat me up. Now that I've played it once I know that low running shots are probably the best way to play it...IMO.

Definitely go and play it if you get the chance...and as already been said, their twilight rates are VERY reasonable!

a few years later and they're still going strong. I guess bankruptcy didn't get the best of them thankfully. I play there at least once a month. beautiful course, always in great shape and very tough. Great staff and of course the scenery is just awesome. I guess im kinda glad housing didn't develop in the area so it can stay public. I've shot my best ever there at a 77 last year.

tee time booked for tomorrow morning. :golfer:

which ones? 2 of them closed about 4yrs ago and all the others are doing great!! the 2 local muni's just got bought by another company and a lot of great improvements done to both courses in the past few years.

not much selection in courses like San Antonio or Houston but we have our fair share.

nice course, but you should really check out the muni's if you haven't played them recenlty. A LOT better than what they were before. Northshore is nice but has a lot of dead spots i've noticed or maybe i find them not on purpose? the fairways could use some love.

what upgrades have been made to the muni's?

i grew up in corpus and learned the game at Lozano and shot my best round ever at Oso but haven't played either in 8 years or so.
Actually I have only played Oso & Pharoahs in CC so I haven't played enough there to tell which is in best shape...all I know is that with the lack of rain in past 5 years no course can withstand the elements of a S. Texas drought. I liked Oso though, never played Lozano. When I go down there I stay in Aransas Pass, so I look to play North Shore or Newport Dunes. The front nine at North Shore the fairways do need care & definition, but the back nine usually makes up for that IMO.

i too grew up playing both when i was a kid and also learned the game at Lozano. they've done quite a bit actually. the layout is still the same on both courses but everything seems so different. the greens have come along way from what they were a few years back, very true and well cut. the city bought the courses i think 3-4yrs ago and did a decent job to revamp them, but Foresight Golf bought them last year or the year before and really did a good job i thought. getting rid of dead spots, it's more open and less usless trees. the fairways are nice and clean throughout the course. it's come along way from before is all i can say. i would put them on your list to play for a quick round paying about $35 on a saturday or sunday. of course i always prefer Newport Dunes in Port Aransas but for the price of $35, both Oso and Lozano are great courses.

Pharoahs is closed and has been for i believe 4-5yrs now. I played there about a year before it closes and thankfully i didnt pay for the round because i would have been dissapointed. it was like playing on dirt.

King Crossing also closed about the same time, i played there once and again thankfully i didnt pay for that round either because as Pharoahs, it was in horrible shape and should have been closed a lot sooner.

You're right about the watering and our drought but i guess both Oso and Lozano are watering it often because it's pretty green out there.

I'm headed down to Port Aransas in late August.

Will be staying at The Port Royal with the wife and kids.

I'm going to try to sneak out 2-3 times with my father to play Palmilla Beach.

The course looks great in photos and i'm shocked at the low green fees.

Anyone out there with advice for the area: golf, food, fishing, fun?

thanks

Get ready to play in the wind, 15-20mph is the norm.

that's it? haha

come on down man! Port Royal is cool, huge pool for everyone. you can walk to the beach. good food on the Island and Port A. Palmilla Beach is in great shape right now! Was there about a month ago, course looked good. greens are fast and keep the ball down. #12 is tough hitting into the breeze coming off of the gulf. I'm always in the #16 fairway to the right., haha. if you lose a ball in the dunes, don't go looking for it. there's snakes in the dunes that like to come out and play.

also, Troon golf now owns Palmilla Beach so that is what saved them from BK some years back. they survived it and rates have stayed the same they've been for a while. they had a local rate earlier in the year for $59. there's a few other muni's in the city that are in top shape right now for around $40 if you head into the city.

I've been following the weather and the wind seems to be pretty hit or miss.

16+ one day 6-and under the next.

Hopefully the wind god takes it easy on me.

I'll leave the ProV1X's at home so I don't get the urge to search for lost ones.

We're pretty excited.

I saw they had a walking rate special for $49 on their website, but that seems to have ended.

Even still, the $89 for an early AM weekday tee time isn't that bad.

I'm planning on walking, so it should be even less.
