Interesting topic.... I didn´t played or practiced golf for the last 4 months, and I just went to the range and was hitting some 7 Irons without any thought and was surprised why I was hitting the ball so well... better... why I was able to compress the ball hard. Sometimes in the past I had the same feeling it was coming and going and I never knew why it happened. The Ballcontact felt great. So after 10 hits I took my Casio out to see why I hit the Ball so well... I found the following discription somewhere - pretty good explanation why this release fits my swing:

Henry Cotton distinguished 3 different types of releases: 1) crossover (roll), 2) slap-hinge, 3) push.

1) A crossover (roll) release happens when:

- upper body is parallel to the target line at impact;
- arms are extended and in front and far away from the body at impact;
- usually, the swing arc is neutral to upright;
- clubhead is perpendicular to the swing arc for a very short period of time (in the impact zone);
- rollover of the rear forearm over the lead forearm happens in the impact zone;
- clubhead is beling delivered from open to closed by the forearm roll;

This release is the most timing-dependent of all three since the process of squaring of the clubface to the swing arc happens in a very short period of time. Players must have a great timing to perform this kind of release decently. Misses are usually severe and to all directions.

2) A slap-hinge release happens when:

- upper body is slightly open to the target line at impact;
- usually, the swing arc is neutral;
- arms are closer to the body at impact and the rear arm is bent in elbow;
- clubhead is perpendicular to the swing arc for a long period of time (can be from waist high to waist high);
- rollover of the rear forearm over the lead forearm happens well after the impact zone;
- clubhead is being delivered from open to closed by the body turn and by the left wrist cupping + rear wrist unhinging;

This release is also somehow timing-dependent. The timing-dependent element is the wrist action. This release is like a well-timed flip - the lead wrist is flat at impact but cups to the inside just after the impact. Players do not need to have a great timing to perform this kind of release decently, although they have to synchronize well the body turn with a pivot. Misses are rather not so big - usually fat or thin shots. It's possible to eliminate one side of the course with this kind of release.

3) A push release happens when:

- upper body is visibly open to the target line at impact;
- arms are very close to the body at impact - lead one pinned across the chest, rear one bent in elbow and behind the rear hip;
- usually, the swing arc is flat to neutral;
- lead wrist is flat or arched, rear wrist is hinged at impact ands stays that way after impact;
- clubhead is perpendicular to the swing arc for a very long period of time (waist high-waist high);
- rollover of the rear forearm over the lead forearm happens after the impact zone;
- clubhead is beling delivered from open to closed by the turn of the body only;

This release is the least timing-dependent of all three since the process of squaring of the clubface to the swing arc happens in a very long period of time and hands/wrists play no active role in this process. Misses are rather small. It's very possible to eliminate one side of the course with this kind of release.

So, no panic I can live with this - I think even in TGM lingo I have a flat left wrist (not visible), because at lowpoint after impact (yellow line)

my left armpit and shaft align in a straight line...

Chris,
I cant see any real problem with this release, except that there will be some reliance on the general swing timing, and it would be possible on a bad timing day to release the slap hinge a fraction too early.
What I see is that your shoulders are very square at impact, and this will pretty much ensure that its either going to be a slap hing or crossover.
If you were to change, I think a bit more rotation and opening shoulders at impact would give you a bit more arm extension through impact, and possibly more of a push release.
But its always personal choice.

Thank you Matt,

exactly what I think I have to do in the future... when I started golf I had 30 degree open shoulders and 45 degree open hips at impact... back to the future...

AND sometimes I need just a confirmation what I think...

Thank you again
Chris

P.S. I think animated gifs are not working here so here are the fotos:

Here is my understanding of why you should not use your hands to power the swing. It is based upon something I read in "The Physics of Golf" (which bluntly says ANY attempt to use your hands to increase clubhead speed will in fact slow down your club head speed).

Why does a whip make a loud crack? Because the tip breaks the sound barrier. How though, can even a child makes something move faster than the speed of sound simply by swinging it with their arm?

Imagine a 10 foot long whip. For simplicity, think of it being made up of 10, 1 foot long sections. When you swing the whip, the first thing that happens is the section in your hand starts to slow down. When it slows, its energy is transfered to the next (2nd section), which now contains the total energy of the 1st and 2nd sections. When the 2nd section slows down, its energy is tranfered to the 3rd section (which now contains all the energy from the previous two sections as well as its own). As each section slows, its energy (along with ALL the previous section's energy) is transfered to the next section. Until you get to the 10th section (the tip) which gets loaded with the energy from the 9 previous sections. That combined energy is so much that it causes the tip to break the sound barrier.

It is easier to make a longer whip "crack" than a shorter one, because there are more "sections" to pass down energy to the tip. Conversely, it is harder to make a shorter whip crack, because there are fewer sections. So while it might be easy for even a child to make a 10 foot whip crack, that same child might have a hard time making a 3 foot whip crack.

How does this apply to golf? Think of the golf swing as being a whip, with the sections being:

1. hips,
2. back,
3. shoulder assembly,
4. arm assembly,
5. hands/club assembly.

You start your downswing by turning your body. When your hips start to slow their energy is transfered to the back. When the back slows the hip & back energy is transfered to the shoulders. When the shoulders start to the slow the hip, back, & shoulder energy is transfered to the arms. When the arms start to slow the accumulated hip, back, shoulder, & arm energy is transfered to the hands/club assembly.

Ever see those swing sequence pictures of someone like Sergio Garcia that has great "lag?" One picture will have his left arm almost vertical, but the club shaft is parallel to the ground. In the next picture his arm has only moved a few inches, but the clubhead has moved several feet so that the shaft and left arm are in almost straight line. That first picture (where the shaft is still parallel to the ground) is when the left arm slows down and transfers all its accumulated energy (from the hips, back, shoulders, and arms) to the hands/club assemembly, that (like a whip) allows the golfer to move to clubhead a great speeds.

What does that have to do with your friend flipping his hands to increase distance? When your friend activates his arm/wrist muscles (especially his right arm) he breaks that kinetic chain that is pushing all that energy down towards the tip of the whip (the clubhead). He isn't adding to the build up energy, he is just substituting the energy generated by his forearm muscles for the accumulated energy from his hips, back, shoulder, & arms.

Imagine swinging a 10 foot long whip with one hand, and grabbing the middle of the wihip with the other hand halfway through the swing "to help it along." That's what you are doing when you use your hands to flip the golf club, and why the book "The Physics of Golf" bluntly states that ANY attempt to use your hands results in a SLOWER clubhead speed.

OK, a little long winded, but that is my understanding.

Hello Slope, you are describing how to do a crossover release... Maybe the slap-hinge-release is a lost art... Believe me I don´t use my hands to power my swing - there is just no time to do it... <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/d0h2fkL7JRE&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/d0h2fkL7JRE&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xd0d0d0&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="640" height="385"></object> Different folks - different releases... Chris P.S. The worst thing for a slap-hinge-release would be holding the right flying wedge!!!
