my ball pops up when I putt! *updated* *videos*

I am convinced that it is not my stroke, because it does not pop up right after I hit it with other putters.

I have a Newport 2.

Could it be the loft of my putter?

Almost assuredly a loft issue. 2 possiblities.

 

1. It could be that you've got too much loft.

 

2. Just as likely that you're sensing not having enough loft on the putter and are compensating your stroke and adding loft.

 

Get fit for your putter (lie and loft). It makes a HUGE difference!

 

I just got mine bent flat and had a degree of loft added and the ball is rolling so true now. Get to someone who's got a good eye and can bend putters. It'll be a snap. The newports bend like butter.

more than likely you need to get fit. Have your stroke looked at too. Believe it or not, most putters will pop the ball into the air just slightly when struck properly and then the ball skids and then starts rolling with forward spin. A pop stroke or a stroke that has a some forward wrist flex with the trailing hand will cause undue bouncing.

My guess is not enough loft.

 

Drives the ball into the ground on impact and you get a pop-up.

I took a high speed video of my putting and the ball clearly launches about half an inch off the ground as soon as I strike it for about 7-8 inches. It does not appear that the ball is driven into the ground at all, rather it just flies into the air right off the clubface.

so, what is the solution? less loft I assume?

ok, to see if decreasing the loft would fix the problem, I delofted my putter by setting up with an extreme forward press.

 

WOW! what a difference!

 

the ball doesn't jump nearly as much off the clubface!

 

I know what I'm doing tomorrow, going to get my putter delofted. Thanks everyone.

Sounds like you've got it figured out, but I'd still like to see the video if you've got time.

Sounds like you need a C-Groove putter. They only have 2* of loft and the grooves help to put top spin rather than backspin on the ball, all the while lifting it up just slightly off the ground to get it out of it's depression. The average Scotty has 4* of loft. I see this alot with Scottys and other higher lofted blades.

 

yeah, I'm gonna try bringing it down to 2* under the eye of a clubmaker, of course

Worked perfectly, that's pretty neat.

 

I've got one thing for you to try before you go out and make any adjustments.

 

Move your ball position up, right behind your left toe. It sounds weird, but you're hitting up on it instead of hitting down on it. I think this is a ball position issue. Give it a try, that's one of the big things that helped me with my stroke.

 

 

That may be all it takes.

Loft might be the problem, but I don't think it's all in the club. At impact, the shaft is pointing backward, away from the target. Ideally, it should be straight (vertical) or with a very slight forward press.

 

I'd say you have some mechanics work to do as well.

why does your putter head lift so high in the follow through? Im guessing because i can't see your takeaway that that goes pretty high as well, normally a backswing mirrors a follow through. This would cause you too strike down on a pretty steep angle. maybe that is the reason it 'pops' up? what do you guys think?

I definitely agree with boyce, I could also work on a little forward press and maintenance of a straight shaft angle at impact,

You have a nice scoopy lift move in your putting stroke. It looked to me like the putts were struck thin as well. I think you would benefit from trying a push drill. set up with the face of your putter against the ball & push the ball towards a target with a low finish & your hands feeling ahead of the ball, This will get rid of the "hit & lift" you do. Hope this helps. Remember that all putters lift the ball after impact, you are a little on the upper echelon of this though.
