Was the Ram Zebra ahead of its time?

My dad sent me several of his old putters and just got around to trying this one. At first it looked ugly to me, too, but no longer. Shocked at how accurate I am with it. Not bad for a free putter. Will give me something to fool with while I save for that Versa 330m.

Yes - for all its design innovation it was a dog. Basically just a big chunk of aluminium, and that's not smart.

Agree with you Dan on slow bumpy greens. I have a couple including a Zebra Look alike with Harley Davidson logo. One I modified after reading an article done by Tad Moore over on the Classics Forum one night. I did just like he said as in filling the cavity with tungsten and epoxy mix. I sorta like the way some of them sit but could never get the feel with them

I got one of those Play It Again $4.99 Ram Zebras (yes, that was the price) mentioned in an earlier posting. It really is accurate, especially on putts inside 5' (the bane to my scores). So much of putting is mental. I was wielding a Zebra thirty years ago, when I thought myself a really good putter. That memory helps when I'm standing over a 6 or 7 footer for birdie. Also mentally, I don't like the feel or sound of face inserts. Another 'mental' reason the Zebra stays in my bag, and the Rossie White Hot Pro Rx stays in the closet. Science be damned--the best putter I ever met on the golf course putted with a primitive wooden thing he had made himself from a broomstick and a piece of 2"x4". It's why I can't resist topics on putters or putting: probably the most individualized and subjective area of golf.

I bought a Zebra putter in 1973, 74 or 75. I believe it was a first edition. My husband says it's a 'block of wood' but only when I'm sinking every putt. I'm trying to find the history. Yes, it's the only putter I've used since then. Thanks for any shared info.

Started with the Bullseye and Anser2, felt like I was waving around straws when putting.

Discovered the Zebra back then, unscrewed the bottom plate, lead taped washers up in there until I got the feel perfect. Made ALOT of putts with it.

Still prefer a heavy head putter.

I had one, got it in the spring of 1976.  I was excited to get it, I think it was right after Ray Floyd won the Masters with it.  Don't remember putting that great with it, I do remember latter the Allen screw heads getting stripped and I couldn't get the sole plate off of it, and it was them making a horrible sound.....
