Pettersson - Stealth Career?

Yuck

Recommended Posts

With this weekend's performance, Carl Pettersson has picked up his 4th PGA win. His career has been under the radar since he only seems to win every other year, which is perfect for not stressing about your status. You would be surprised how many players never get 4 wins. I expect we will hear from him again.....in 2012.

It's cool to see a guy with a swing like his be so successful, looks like a guy that has created consistency out of an "over the top" slicer swing. No wonder his approach shots had so much stopping power. I was still sad to see Dean Wilson lose though, he seems like a pretty stand up guy and a win would have been awesome for him from a career longevity perspective.

I am constantly amazed what it takes to impress people here. We apparently have the greatest collection of non-Tour members(with Tour level talent, of course) in history of golf- right here at golfwrx!!

They had nine of the top 30 in the world playing, right after a major a few thousand miles away.

Glorified mini-tour event? I guess no TW and no PM constitutes such a label...

Some posts on this forum remind me of one episode of The Cosby Show. Dr. Cliff Huxtable was all excited about some classic film being shown on TV, I think it was Casablanca, but I am not sure. In any case, it was a black and white classic. Cliff was telling his kids all day that they had to watch this to see a really good film for once. So in the evening, they are all set with snacks and everything in front of the TV. The film starts and within five seconds Cliff's teenaged son Theo begins to frantically push buttons on the remote control, than jumps up, runs to the TV set, pushes buttons there, starts to shake the set, and finally remarks that the TV set must be broken, because there is no colour.

Those who can appreciate golf will know, what this rambling is about, for the others, there is the Golf Channel showing "The Unbelieveable Adventures of Tiger, Phil, Camilo and Ricky" instead of golf.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

I think (at least hope) we will be seeing more wins from him before 2012. Last year his game was off do to his great weight loss - he decided to get fit and lost a ton of weight, but he also lost his golf swing dew to that, so this winter he ate and gained the weight back and has been on the top of his game! May not be a very healthy choice, but sure shows his commitment to the game, doesn't it?! rolleyes.gif

The commentators on TV say he has never taken lessons. Not sure if that's true, but pretty cool if it is!

I can appreciate golf, that is not the question.

And anyone who watches golf on a regular basis knows world golf ranking is full of BS.

There is a much better way to catagorize pro tour golfers; Major Contenders and Everyone Else. I am not talking major winners, I am talking about year after year contenders. There are some tournaments that draw a large cross section of major contenders and there are those that don't.

It seems like these "off week" events lend themselves more to a controlled golf, fairways and greens seem to win. Its great golf, but boring TV.

Maybe its just me, but I watch golf like people watch NASCAR. I watch for the crashes. Soft Driver to 280, 6i to the center of the green for a long birdie putt = me sleeping. Now if you have a guy rip his guts out trying to carry the sand at 324 only to cut it behind a giant tree, then hit a 2i off a root that draws and balloons at the same time to avoid a overhanging branch = my attention.

Sorry, maybe I'm not that much of a golf fan but fairways and greens are boring on TV. I'd much rather be out playing. It just seems like the big boys of the tour have much more flair for the dramatic

This is pretty much exactly how I felt about the end of the tournament.

I mean every time I watch Carl swing I think how on earth is that not turning into a horrendous slice? He does drop the club a lot, but not enough... I mean it's right up there with String Theory as far as how the heck does he do it?

It's almost 'unique' to see someone without a clone swing that understands his own mechanics and can play well with an unorthodox mechanic. Good on him. It's not like he came out of no where, he's been doing well.

I agree about Dean too. He is an easy guy to pull for. Boy that Stack and Tilt sure left him with some dicey shots from the rough though. (That is NOT a shot at Stack and Tilt, simply a comment on how NERVOUS Dean obviously became in the last round)

First off; Who?

Secondly; There was a PGA tourny this weekend?

In all seriousness a win is not a win on the Tour anymore. You have legit tour stops and then you have glorified Mini tour events.

It was a bigger event than you are giving it credit for, and as a golf fan I enjoy watching TV coverage of people that aren't the usual suspects. The Canadian Open may not have been relevant for you, but it is almost 100 years rich in history and in a country with a population the size of California it is a pretty big deal for us. I wish that every weekend was as grand as The Masters too, but I am not going to be a hater about it.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Just b/c Tiger and Phil and Ernie are not there, it's a glorified mini tour event? It's ther 2nd or 3rd oldest event on the PGA Tour since the late 1800s or early 1900's. Plus, none of the big names have done anything in the last 3 months anyway besides Stricker.

Come on now, I thought everyone knew the week after the major is a blowoff week.

Yes the Canadian Open was once a fantastic event, but it has slipped to B grade status. Sorry.

And yea it does matter when Tiger, Phil, Ernie, ect don't show. It matters in ticket sales, it matters in TV ratings, it matters in sponsorship dollars, and it matters in credibility.

Pettersson is obviously a great golfer, but he's still considered a darkhorse for big tournaments.

The fact that some of the biggest names don't show up matters for a lot of material reasons, but for me and other hardcore golfers it doesn't diminish our love for watching the game, discussing the results and appreciating players that may not get the spotlight when the heavy hitters are in the field.

I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that you are right, but there is a patriotic piece of me and others that doesn't feel the need to point it out. I will also say that the absence of those players probably didn't diminish Canadian ticket sales very much because it is our only official tour stop and our BFF Mike Weir is playing :friends:

OH no, TW didn't show up in Canada the first two days to cash in the appearance money and miss the cut....

Go Canada, and Sweden!
