4 Hybrid to replace 3 iron?

Since hybrids go a longer distance than the irons they replace (at least for me they do), if you were to replace a 3 iron, would you get the 4 hybrid? I'm not looking for more distance, just a little higher flight and such. I know I should go hit it and see the distance, etc. I was just wondering if anyone does this?

Try replacing the iron with the same lofted
hybrid, Good starting point, Distance will not be
that much different, I replaced my three iron and
now see the distance that I would get only when
I had pured my three iron .

Yes, a 4 hybrid could hit as far as a 3 iron. I generally play without a 3 iron or 3 hybrid. I'd personally rather have an extra wedge, so I usually play Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood or 19.5 Fybrid, then 4 hybrid and onto 5 iron on up. I simply don't find many situations where the lack of a 3 iron or 3 hybrid hinders me.

Distancewise that was the case for me, but I would add 3 hybrid because it can give you little more flexability by simply gripping down.

BTW, I gave up on hybrid too much hook tendency for my swing while my long irons are quite neutral.

"puttingmatt" has the right idea... trade loft for loft... Hybrids "often" have longer graphite shafts, and head designs that get the ball up; so you should be higher and ahead yardage wise.

I dropped my 3 for a 21* hybrid and wont be going back anytime soon. As for the 4 iron, I think that I like to have it in the bag for sticky situations - I spend a little more time in the woods than I should. Sometimes the lower penetrating ball flight comes in handy.

Good question...I have found in the brand of clubs that I use that it is best to do 3 iron and 3 hybrid, 4 iron and 4 hybrid, etc. I know that hybrids can vary quite a bit on how they act because of several factors...The main thing I have found is that the distance is about the same if both are well hit; the difference is in how high and forgiveness... My 22* Peanut (4h) which is bent to 23* replaced my 3 iron because the 20* (3h) was too long and left too much gap for me

I hit hybrids noticeably farther than irons of the same loft so for me it's a full club difference, maybe even a club and a half. I replaced my 24* 4 iron with a 28* cobra baffler 6 hybrid and I hit the hybrid farther (215 vs. 205).

For me, I use a 23* 4 hybrid to replace the 3 iron. It gives me distance i needed to fill gap wise. Don't think so much of replacing x iron with x hybrid. Figure out the distance needed to fill a gap and search for something that fills it.

Dropped my 21 deg 3 iron for a 22 degree hybrid

 

Hybrid shaft cut down to same length as 3 iron

 

Get a good low torque graphite shaft to provide stability (avoid hooks)

 

Also have 25 degree when I decide not to play my 24 deg 4 iron
