Pace of Play and Fat Pros

Yuck

Recommended Posts

Although it is just anecdotal data, It seems a disproportionate number of "Hefty" Pros are fast golfers and a most of the extremely slow players seem to be slim? Coincidence or is there a connection. Examples of Fat and Quick include Calc, Daly, Laura Davies, and Stadler (the elder). There are too many slim slow golfers to list, but Crane tops the list. I am having trouble coming up with fat slow pros, and I assume Sabbitini is meant to be fat someday.

Kevin Na is the slowest player, anybody remember when angel cabrera played with kevin na in the final round of the players 2009. Angel was getting pissed because kevin na was taking forever to hit his shot. I remember in the end when kevin na went to shake angel's hand, angel looked pissed. I remember in an article sabatini said na was slow but ben crane is playing alot faster than he use to.

Maybe because all the of the larger guys you mentioned have been on tour forever and don't have 50 swing gurus, sports shrinks, etc turning their brain to mush with big routines, etc. They are comfortable with their game and just go knock the ball around.
Interesting thought as I can't think of any larger pro who is too technical with their swing, but there are a lot of rails who are (CHIII, although, not slow as far as I know).

It is a common mistake to associate pace of play with pace of travel.
Exactly, great point! I don't care how long it takes you get to the ball, where the pace of play really slows down is the 12 steps in your pre-shot routine, along with reading putts from every conceivable angle.

Count me in the heavy and fast. Probably too fast.

Us fat guys certainly don't have swing gurus. Who is going to tell me how to turn around this tire? There are less mechanics. It's all feel and powering through the ball. Just get up and hit the damn thing people. You've hit a million drivers in your life. What do you need another practice swing for?

I remember a few years back when Daly had his last win at the Buick at Torrey Pines. He was in a playoff with Chris Riley and I think Luke Donald. They were all hitting their second shot on the playoff hole, the par 5 18th. Donald had already hit and then Riley hit. Both Riley and Donald laid up, and Riley's ball was still in the air when Daly hit his second shot going for the green. It landed in the back bunker and he got up and down for birdie to win the tournament.

Now that is fast play when you don't even wait for your playing partner's ball to land when you hit!! CLASSIC!!

Holmes fat and slow. Bubba skinny and fast.
Mickelson big ad fast. Palmer (the King) fit and fast.
Price skinny and super fast. TIger fit and medium speed Leaning slow.
Player super fit lighting fast. Nickluas some what big and slow.
Floyd Fat and snail slow. Fuyrk fit and snail slow.

I think it has more to do with style of play then body size. But I think that the big guys tend to be more power oriented and that is why they play fast. Slow play messes with their timing.

geoff ogilvy, skinny and fast

Geoff Ogilvy... Fast! Have you seen him move? We call him "The Sloth" because he moves so slowly and deliberately.cheesy.gif

I think the OP might be on to something here. Maybe the PGA should ban fitness trailers and encourage beer drinking and all you can eat nights.

How about skinny and slow? Langer never had more than an inch of fat on his body but was notoriously slow.

Caught a glimpse of him on one of the greens of the back 9 yesterday. He was infurioratingly slow.

Adam Baddeley - slim and fast.

Im still trying to figure out how in hell there are fat tour players, i mean geez if the make the cut and play the weekend they walk 30 miles a week plus elevation. They must do some great dining.
Me too. They must have bacon smoothies for breakfast.

Hypothesis:
For the bigger dudes there is often only one way to get the arms around your body, for the skin and bones types, there is so much room for variance, thus technical versus "feel". Fast and slow.

The other side of that is those that look at their putts from one angle are often perplexed why they hit it 4-6 feet short or past the cup, and then I have to wait as they proceed to three jack. Now that takes time, when it is five times a round! Take time on your first putt and you either won't have a second put or won't even have to line up the tap in. :clapping:

Unless it is near the cup who cares about stepping on someones line, that would speed it up too.

Fuzzy-fat and fast. Once at Augusta while standing in the fairway on number two, he got annoyed at the group in front. He walked over toward the gallery to ask someone with a pairing sheet who was playing in front of him and the answer was Chip Beck. Fuzzy's response was something like "you gotta be f-bomb kidding me, Chip Beck...this is going to be a long day.

On another occasion at Augusta, Woosie and Daly played all four rounds together. On Sunday, they were the first pairing out. Obviously, out of contention, they finished their rounds in some ridiculas time. Like sub 3 hours. I think they were repremanded for playing too fast.

Remember Daly at Firestone a year or two after the praking lot fight, was first out as a two some on Sunday and him and the other guy played like in less than 2 hours for 18 and he was fined by the PGA for fast play and he shot like 1 over or something, now that was fast. Love fast play.

Done for year selling it all.
