My First Bettinardi

DASS BB Zero (Review Added 8/7/10)
Bettinardi Dass BB Zero, registry RJB2350

Not only is it my first Bettinardi, but my first putter with a sound slot. First off it is absolutely beautiful, I love the simple stampings, the putter looks like all business to me. The honeycomb face milling looks fantastic. I made a little adjustment to the paintfill from the stock red and black, to blue and white. I love how "beefy" the putter is, the flat fat top line, and big bumpers are really pleasing to my eye.

The best feature for my stroke is the 1/2 toe hang, which based upon the few putts I hit on the putting green really seems to suit my stroke. I am really looking forward to taking this bad boy out on the course. Here are some pics for your viewing enjoyment, I apologize for my lack of photography skills.

Nice! You've got a great putter.

Did you know that the change in paint fill might mess with the value? The point of the registry in some cases is to keep the Bettinardi stock as it left the shop. Hence when it comes back to the shop I'm told they will not do anything to it to take it away from the configuration it was in when it entered the registry.

Personally I like the blue color and what the heck if you're going to keep it you're going to love it. If you decide to sell it later you may want to take it back to the registered color though.

Not RJB's best I'm afraid. The heel and toe are too squared off and blocky which doesn't complement the rounded heel and toe at the flange.

Not true..... I had one similar to this that I had a) reshafted from graphite to steel and B) had a sight dot added. All work performed by RJB, maybe it is devalued but only offering it for sale will determine that.

Not a fan of the blue, but it's what you like that counts...... great putter

I stand corrected. If it was done in the shop then it should hold up. Maybe they were talking about custom work done outside the Bettinardi shop?

I also agree its not the best shape Bettinardi has released. I have a BB0 as well as several BB1 and BB8's. There is something about this shape that is not as pleasing to my eye as the BB8, particularly the BB8 signature series which IMO is the best he's produced. BB0 appears to be popular to buyers as almost everything coming out that is special is a BB0 model. BB8 fans haven't had much to choose from these days.

Ok, however I disagree with saying it's not one of his best. Maybe type, "I don't think it looks as good from some others the master himself puts out."

To me, I don't like any plumbers neck..they look shut...all of them. How would I know that is not one of his best....errr...wait, they are all made the same way. Oh forget it, just seemed like a crappy post in the middle of a bunch of congrats and cheers!

I had my HMM paintfill changed at their shop. New pics and registry were sent to me. The site has not been updated yet though. Having the registry changed does involve an upcharge, $35 IIRC..

Thanks for the nice comments on the putter and the paintfill. Paintfill just requires a lot of patience and practice. Ok, I have had a chance to take this bad boy out for a few holes and I feel like I can give an honest assesment on its performance. I am no journalist so I will keep it short and sweet

Looks - This is subjective to everyones tastes, brushed stainless is my favorite finish for multiple reasons, durability, risistance to glare, and not distracting behind the ball. I really like the headshape of the BB Zero, or DH89, or 009, so it really suits my eye well. Flat top line, little bigger bumpers, kind of a beefier headshape. I like the simplicity of the stampings and the blank sole, nothing over the top or distracting.

Feel - First of all since it is stainless it certainly has a bit more of a "crisp" feel than what you may find in carbon, it is however the feel I prefer. It certainly is a bit softer than some other stainless models I have had in the past including studio selects and a A.S.S DH89, however that may be attributed to the sound slot. The putter gives great feedback from a feel standpoint, you know when you have hit it on the button because it feels like butter, mishits have a dinstincly different feel. It does have a pretty large sweet spot compared to most blade putters I have owned.

Sound - This is where the real difference lies compared to anything I have ever owned, and/or putted with. I was not sure what to expect with the sound slot as I have never tried it before. When a putt is struck on the sweet spot it does make a light "tink" type of sound. Nothing offensive or loud by any strectch, but it is there. What I really like about it is the enhanced feel which I guess is directly related to the sound. It adds a different sound, feel, and way to gather feedback on how well the putt was struck. I can't say a putter with or without a sound slot is better, just different, I think many who have never tried one may be surprised by the amount of feedback you get from one.

Overall Performance - For me this is where the putter excels. I don't know if it is because of the milling or a combination of other elements with the putter, but it puts an amazing roll on the ball. I have never had a putter where when the ball came off the face it hugged the ground any better. It may be attributed to toe hang, weight, etc., but for me it puts a grat roll on the ball. This coupled with the fact that it requires zero maintenance, offers great feedback, and looks great, makes it a winner.

I would be interested to hear others comments on the sound slot. What your thoughts and experiences are with them. Thanks.

Great review Nick!! Thanks for the input. Do you know if the loft is still at 3 degrees?
[/quote]

Thank you, the loft was set to 4 degrees from the previous owner, which seems to work quite well for me. I am actually going to have to put a new YSC shaft in it because the current shaft length at 34" is a bit short for me. My ultimate goal is to save enough scratch to go to the studio, get fit, buy another putter, and have this one adjusted to my specs. Maybe in the spring, got another kid due in early December, gonna need to save for diapers too :D

  • 2 years later...

I'm new to the Bettinardi family as I picked up the Signature Series #6 which I think it is absolutely the best feeling, best looking putter I've ever owned. Gorgeous as this is the 1st time without owning a Scotty Cameron as I'm not missing them. Glad I made the switch wish I would have a long time ago but better late than never
