Callaway FTiZ Tour v's FT9 Tour?

MG 1977

Recommended Posts

I've decided to pickup a more forgiving driver than my current gamer the FT Tour. I want to stick with Callaway so it's between the FTiZ and FT9 Tour. I've had the FT9 Tour in the past and thought it was a superb club. I'm wondering if the FTiZ is an improvement on it? Is it as long as the FT9 and how much more forgiving is it? Think I may go the Imix route with this one.

Who's gamed both and whats your verdict?

The FT Tour with stock Voodoo is the longest driver that I have hit. I have a FT-IZ with a real Voodoo at 46 inches. Its long, maybe a little less hot than the FT Tour, but long. Obviously, its more forgiving than the FT Tour. I had a FT9 Tour draw with the stock ZCOM. I didn't like that shaft, but the FT9 was fairly consistent. In my opinion, the FT-IZ is consistently longer than a FT9, but also more forgiving and easier to hit straight. The FT-IZ is very consistent from shot to shot.

Looking on callaways website I have noticed the FTiz at 60* is 3.5 degrees more upright than the FT Tour (56.5*), what difference if any will that make? For the record my miss is a hook, especially on fast swings when i go after one.

I got a good deal on a 8.5* FTiz Tour, Imix with Voodoo SVS7 shaft from 3Balls, £150 inc postage but will probably have around £20 to pay in taxes when it arrives later this week, still cheaper than I could get one over here especially with an upgraded shaft.

Whats the spin rates like on the FTiz compared to a FT Tour or FT9 Tour?

Whats the best combo you've found for this head?

I have had both the ft9 tour, and the ftiz, the ft9 tour wins hands dowm, The ftiz is like for people that have trouble hitting the driver. I don't think you will like it. Not even close, the ft9 tour is so much better. the ftiz has a hot face, but it is hard to hit, and hard to look at. Also the ball flight is super high. It would be a great club for a senior, or someone that doesn't know how to hit a driver. In irons, the ftiz would be like the sgi irons.

I've hit all three, and I still game the FT 9 Tour imix with Diamana Whiteboard 73 stiff. Easily more forgiving than the FT Tour and just as straight as the IZ Tour. Much better sound for me too. In fact, I hit much longer drives with the FT 9 Tour than the IZ Tour I demo'd. The sound is what got me though. I love the sound of the Ft 9 Tour so much more. The head shape is more appealing to me as well. With the correct shaft, it's been the longest, and consistently the straightest driver I've ever owned.

ill go the other way. picked up a ftiz 8.5 tour in stock voodoo stiff.i always play x... and hit it on a rope 12 times in a row. immeadiately put my superfast with oban up for sale which i love..its not that its longer its just so easy to aim and hit it where you want distance is fine... im a scratch player and struggle with the driver..this may change my game entirely.

I'm confused, you said that you think the FTiz is for people who have trouble hitting a driver, but then say that it is hard to hit? It is a great head for more than seniors and people who don't know how to hit a driver.

@ the OP:
I have an FT Tour, FTiz and FT9. If you want to work the ball, then go for the FT9, it'll be more forgiving than the FT Tour but still be workable. FTiz is the way to go if you want to hit it long and straight. It is longer for me than the FT9 was (and I was fitted for the FT9 at a cally performance center, so I know I was fitted pretty well).

You can't go wrong w/ either, they are all excellent.

I am hitting the Ft-iZ and it is the longest driver, by far, that I have ever hit and the Ho in me has forced me to try everything.

No Comparison IMHO.

hit the FT-IZ at a callaway demo day a few months ago. 8.5/diamana 73x and could not believe the consitancy of the shot pattern. The ball just wanted to stay straight. Had a appendicitis and was out for 6 weeks so I didn't buy it. Started playing agian a few weeks ago. Went out to the course yesterday with a FT-IZ 9.5/ aldila dvs 80x...and found the same results on the course as i did at the demo day. I'm a 1 and usually play with a cobra speed pro d/9.5/voodoo xvs7 at 44.5 d(driver sspeed is 116-118). this has been my go to driver for the last few years and everytime I look at other bats I come back to this club. I believe the FT-IZ will be replacing the cobra, infact I think it just did. The IZ just holds its line better than any driver I've hit. I originally demoed the FT tour and the FT 9 with the IZ at the same time with the same shaft (I-Mix). The IZ is a higher launching head and not as workable as the others. Looks wise the FT tour was the best IMO. Althoug working the ball off the tee is a great idea I have no problem with high and straight. Length wise the IZ is longer than my cobra by a 5-10 yards, but that could be the extra length (.75 inch) or the lack of the slight fade I get with my cobra.

All in all the IZ is easy to hit and the ball flight is fantastic. For me it is staying in the bag for awhile. I will probably get an 8.5 to swap out on windy days (Imix).

I tried all three at the Callaway center on the LM. The results for all three were almost identical for all parameters including shot shape. The FT9 and FT-IZ tours were identical. I preferred the feel of the 9 and IZ (I could only try the tour with the Voodoo on the day...?). The FT-IZ tour is same low launch and low spin as the FT-9 tour but would expect more forgiving. The fitter said guys on tour are using the IZ for this reason (dont know who). Im happy bombing it straight so the IZ is the obvious choice. It sure is an ugly SOB though..

I was able to demo the FTIZ last month.....

My thoughts?

The shape is a little strange - like a triangle sort of.
However, its was long, really long! It was hard to work, it pretty much wanted to just go straight. The sound also was kind of wierd. Kind of a deep "boom" sound.

All in all, I have kicked around buying one for the times my current gamer and me aren't getting along.

Tested with X flex Voodoo shaft.

Cheers....

I just received my FT-9 Tour last night from callawaypreowned.com. I haven't gamed a Callaway driver since the days of the Steelhead. Since then, here's a quick list of SOME of the drivers I've purchased just this year alone in search of the holiest of golf grails:

Titliest 905R
Taylormade Burner TP 08
Taylormade Burner TP 09
Nike Sumo2 Tour
Nike Sumo 5000

So now I get my FT-9 Tour. And I did so because of the comments from this forum. I was lucky to score an 8.5* Tour with a 73 x-flex WB.

Let me just say this: I am putting almost everything on the BST forum next week!

This combo is incredible! Like some said in this thread, if you find the right shaft combo, the FT-9 Tour will waste all others. I love this thing and I played only one round with it. Is it a honeymoon thing? Sure. But there were some places on the golf course that I normally play that I have never hit second shots from before. And I am talking about from the fairway!

I do not have experience with the FTiZ, but if you were to offer me any driver and shaft of my choice, I would decline because this is my gamer!

Good luck and I hope my comments helped.
