Any round putter grip guys here?

I have been gaming a mid length 43 inch putter 99% of the time the past couple of years but thought I give a old Ping Anser 4 I use to play a try. This week I was following a thread at PT in which several guys were talking about how they had swiched out their normal grips with a standard round grip.

Seeing that all my mid putter grips are round, I pulled the grip off my Anser 4 and replaced it with a standard Ping rubber grip.

This evening I got out for a skins round and the results were very pleasing. I never putt with a glove, but with this grip on, I really like the feel putting with the glove on.

Anyone else playing a round grip on the putter?

I recently put a standard round grip on my putter as well. I putt with a Cleveland Corey Pavin 8802 style blade, which is very much a 'feel' oriented way to putt (sometimes I have feel, sometimes not!)

I used one of the same grips I have on all my clubs - a Lamkin 3Gen Performance Plus. The Performance Plus grips have less taper and are thicker under the lower hand than many other grips (I actually tried a Tour Velvet cord grip for a day but it was way too thin under my right hand).

The results aren't in whether it's helped my putting or not yet, but I will say it allows many more options than a flat-sided putter grip does. My home course has a lot of steeply sloped greens, and I tend to pull putts with the ball above my feet, and push them with the ball below. With the round grip, I actually find it really comfortable to strengthen or weaken my grip slightly to help avoid a push or pull. Paradoxically, opening up all these setup options instead of trying to lock myself into a standard setup seems to have helped me relax on the green!

We'll see how it goes in the future, but I really see no reason to switch back to a flat-sided putter grip for the time being.

I have the original round (leather) grip on my George Lowe Sportsman Original. I don't know if my is any better than with my other putters, but that grip just seems to match that flange / blade oldie.

I have a beautiful Machine Putter I had custom made. It feels great, but I've had difficulty getting the face of the putter back to square at impact. I know the problem is me, not the putter. I never feel comfortable gripping the putter. I've tried several grips. I went to mid size to see if I could take my hands out, that didn't work. I've tried several standard size in pistol and other shapes. The last grip I put on I didn't get exactly perpendicular with the face and I was pushing putts. I had read about a few people using round grips on their putters after it became a hot topic when Jim Furyk put an upside down round grip on his putter. I really hadn't considered it seriously, but had given it a passing thought. Yesterday I putted horrendously. 34 putts. That could be my all time worst. Afterward I stopped by my local Golfsmith and purchased two new putter grips. I needed to get one on that was more aligned with the putter face. At the spur of the moment while preparing to remove the current grip, I decided I would try a round grip.

I started with a single wrap near the top of the shaft, then went to double wrap, triple wrap and then quadruple wrap at the bottom of the grip area to take out some of the taper in the grip. I put a .600 round Golf Pride Tour Velvet on my putter. When I got to my club today my normal group wanted to watch football, I didn't, and I was subsequently invited to play with some other guys I know. Only thing was, we had to tee off in five minutes from right then. I have to hit a few shots to loosen up or I risk injury. So, I putted with a round grip on my putter for the first time ever when I got to the first green. I had 26 putts today. 26. I went back through my records on ShotByShot. In the last year, I've had 27 putts twice in 79 rounds. Both of those were in the last 6 months since I got my Machine Putter. My average is 31.39 putts per round in that time.

Today I had 10 one-putts that totaled 81 feet of made putts. That doesn't include footage from any green I two-putted. I didn't have any three-putts. Oh, and BTW, the greens at my club are modeled after Augusta National and Pinehurst. You can easily have a 4 foot putt with 2 feet of break. They are currently running about 11.5. If you're above the hole on some greens it may roll off the front if you miss the hole.

Giving it a bit more thought. I calculate I had a total of 112 feet of putts made today. I think that's pretty darn good. I had a few bad holes and managed to post only a 74. Considering I didn't strike it all that well, my putting really saved me today.

Sorry to go on and on about this. Obviously, I am stoked. It's only one round. But I wanted to paint a complete picture. It was awesome to set the putter down on the line I wanted and to just grip the putter very lightly. I didn't worry that if I gripped the club on the edge of the flat part of the grip it might twist. I cannot imagine ever using anything but a round grip on my putter ever again. I know I would not have putted this well with a standard grip.

If a standard putter grip feels uncomfortable to you, I would give a round grip a try.

Search round putter grip and similar here on the forum as there are several old threads. I was doing a bit of research this morning when I ran across them. Seems to be a more common practice than I would have thought. To my surprise, several touring pros were said to use round grips on their putters. Could be interesting to try, that is for sure.

There is a lot of discussion on this topic at Puttertalk.com too.

Ever since I put a round grip on my putter I would never go back. It has helped me with aligning the putter square to my target in addition to slowing down the rotation of the putter during my stroke. This, combined with a properly fit putter is making a huge impact on my game.

i dont know if i am answering this correctly but I will give it a shot.

i have a true round putter grip in the SuperStroke Slim. I bought a white hot CS #7 and it came with a superstroke slim and i was skeptic at first. I wanted to see how it played. I have to say this stops the break of the wrist 100%. No more push or pull of my puts. Alignment was made easier because if this grip is put on correctly it gives you a nice address to the putter head. These grips get expensive and they get larger (as i have the slim, and it feels like a fatso!), but they do work. Give this a try if you want to get away from the conventional round putter grip.

so i hope i answered this right or to some extent.

Thanks. I looked over 6-7 pages in the General Discussion on Puttertalk and couldn't find anything. I will have to check again.
For you guys using round grips on putters, which grips are you playing? Iron grips? Specific round putter grips?
Honestly, I have never seen a round putter grip.

Dan, I'm just using a standard rubber Ping grip on my putter, the same one as all my other clubs. It may no be for everyone, but I like the feel and it works great for me. I've been doing this for some time now, so I am use to the feel.

Thanks Bogeydog,

Read where some folks are using iron grips and putting 7-10 wraps of tape at the bottom to get rid of the taper.

Cstone,

Is the Super Stroke "slim" a round grip? Saw pics online but it is hard to tell if it is perfectly round.

Found the thread on Puttertalk. Great insights here from some knowledgeable folks. Tad Moore is one of them.

No, it is not completely round. It does have a flat side on it. The best grip I found for doing a round grip is a Winn non taper grip. You can get regular and oversize.

No round putter grip here but I have a friend that put a pistol grip on his driver and he swears by it.

I am pretty sure that your friend is breaking USGA rules with that club. If you are loosing money to him on the course then I would suggest bringing that up at you next round.

This is a great thread , i have only been playing golf for a year and, i thought i would eventually get the feel of a putter grip after i played for a while. But it just hasnt happened yet i am going to try one of those big jumbo grips next but , if that doesnt work i think i will give a round grip a shot.

BTW I thought round grips on a putter was a no, no in golf but , i guess since thats what this thread is about then its legal....is that right?

Perfectly legal. Ever see a belly putter?

As for jumbo grips "next year"? You are kidding right? Next year. Dude, order you a Tigershark jumbo tonight and get it put on next WEEK. Ha ha.. Great grip. Been using one all year. I have tried about every jumbo grip out there. Also, check out an Iomic oversized. Not as big as most, but pretty good sized grip. Get the Iomic at www.regripit.com and the Tigershark at The Golf Warehouse or Edwin Watts websites. Very nice grips. In Tenn, talking about "next year". Hmmm.... Ha ha...

A piece written by Bruce Rearick at the US Golf Academy about round grips...

http://usgolfacademy.blogspot.com/2010/11/putting-advice.html?spref=fb

"what we found is that for some players with very consistent postures and setups it is easier to attach the putter using a round grip. Using a round grip is easier than getting a flat surface at the perfect angle"

I would highly recommend bookmarking the US Golf Academy's website and reading his blog. Bruce is an amazing instructor. I drove 12 hours each way to work with him and plan on doing so again each year.

Oldest trick in the book.

Edit out the "year" and make me look like a dumbazz :D

Got an email back today from Best Grips in Conneley, Texas.

Sounds like he has some grips and makes some. Leather, his own, Gripmaster brand, etc..

Just passing this on for anyone looking for a round putter grip.

http://bestgrips.com/

Below is one grip he suggested to me for putting. He also was quick to remind me that they make grips and I will be looking at the options soon. The grip below is a round (iron) Gripmaster grip in smooth leather...

I put a Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G jumbo on the old 8883 today and it felt really good at the store. Maybe it was just the putting green at Edwinn Watts but, i was draining everything and it felt amazing. The real test will be on the course tommorrow tho but, so far i am excited about the possibilities so we will see.
