Ryder Cup Captain(merged)

This might not be a popular post but I really can't stand Cory Pavin as US Ryder Cup Captain. First off the rain gear doesn't work and I heard they knew about this on Tuesday and didn't do anything about it. Also the uniforms are the ugliest things I have ever seen. He is so boring and has nothing to say. They he goes and says that setting up Tiger and Rory to play isn't in the Spirit of the Ryder Cup. That statement really bothers me, maybe it isn't in the spirit of the Ryder Cup to be the Captain and not cheer when Steward Cink drops a 40 foot bomb on 17 when Rory was in there tight. I just wanted to come out with my hate post before the US won or lost so I wouldn't look like I results oriented. Also if i missed any hating please add below.

Let me guess...you love Rex Ryan as well. I'm fine with the fact that Pavin left his pom poms at home. Also, I like the uniforms...and it's not like Pavin made the rain suits himself.

His job is to put his team in position to win. Time will tell!

+1, Nicely put. The rain suits were poorly made. Get over it.

You say his job is to put his team in position to win and he puts them on the course with rain gear that doesn't protect from the rain. Sounds like you are making my case.

I heard Pavin wore one of the rain suits in a car wash and he was soaked when he got out. But he thought it would be a pretty funny prank on his players and he just knew deep down inside it would help the media do their job, so he made the players wear them. Corey...what a funny guy!!!

I agree. The Ryder Cup Captaincy is a great honor for an aging player. But, the top 50 or so American players are all capable of shooting 65 any time, on any course. So, there is no need for any "Captain strategy decisions" regarding picking players or pairing twosomes. Selecting the to 12 points earners and picking names out of a hat to see who plays when and with whom, would work fine.

Golf is an individual sport. It is a player against the course. Ryder Cup doesn't change that. The game is still just player against the course.
A team sport like football is 11 guys on offense versus 11 guys on defense. To make it work the players need to work together to form a team, and they need a good stratgey of play calling to have success. Coaching is critically important to a team sport like football.

Not saying USGA officials aren't involved at all at some level, but the Ryder Cup is administered on this side by the PGA of America (not the USGA or PGA Tour).

As far as the original post, it's like the New Orleans Saints. They're all pro football players. They know what the H they're doing. I don't see why Sean Payton gets so much credit. It's not like the Saints didn't win a lot before he arrived. And that Chad Knaus at Hendrick Motorsports. Why does he get so much credit? He's not building the engines or driving the car. Anybody in a Hendrick car could win anytime he wanted. Right, Dale Jr.?

Funny how when the US team was up 6-4 the scribes were basically saying that Corey had pulled off almost all the right moves: pairing Cink and Kuchar, pairing Woods and Stricker, pairing Zach Johnson and Mahan, and the ultimate wild card that shoved Monty's words back in his face: Watson and Overton beating Harrington and Donald by a convincing 3&2 margin. And they were saying that Monty was an arrogant a** who was talking too much. Think about what was behind the 6-4 margin: putting, putting, putting. Once our putts stopped falling, and the Europeans' putts started falling, that was the turning point. In the end, taking away rain gear issues, a perceived lack of passion, and whatever other ways you can think of to bash the captain, he's only as good as his team performs. They performed well through 10 matches and very poorly through the next six matches. If they can beat the Euros by a total of three points tomorrow (not impossible in twelve matches, they beat them by a total of two points in the first ten matches after all) then the cup will be coming home. Putting, putting, putting...that's what it will come down to.
