.....and other golf words

Slow day at work......So I've been reading a bunch of posts and taken note of how often the words gaming and gamer are being used. Or in some cases someone will just say game to describe the use of a club.

When did this become popular. Why not just say "what club is Tiger using" instead of "what club is tiger gaming". Or perhaps "I decided to use my scotty cameron putter" instead of "The scotty cameron is my gamer"

It reminds me of the early 2000s when people stopped saying "3rd green" or "5th tee" and started saying 3 green or 5 tee.

So what's up with the increase in this? Does it make people sound better golfers? I have never heard anyone on the golf course say it, only here or other message boards.

Are there other words/phrases that are unique to the golf community?

The more lingo you use, the better you are at golf. Once I started incorporating "gamer" into my golf vocabulary, I instantly shaved 3 strokes off my handicap.

I never heard the word 'gamer' until Scotty Cameron came along and started using it to describe what was covered previously by the term 'my putter.'

I struggle to get into the lingo as well.

Another questionable term would be "low spin monster" to describe a shaft or driver. Why's everything have to be a monster? Do a search for "monster" in the club-builders section....only 14 pages worth of threads with the term "monster" in it. Scary.

While we're at it, I can't stand it when someone calls club(s) "point-and-shoot". It's as if other clubs require an interpretive dance prior to taking a swing with them.

I'm in the same boat in that I hadn't heard the term "gamer" until people started buying 8 Scotty Camerons, only one of which they could stomach getting a ding or some sole brushmarks on. The rest they oil up and take pictures of.

As somebody whose first language is not English, but who thinks he has a pretty good grasp of it, I also wonder why all of a sudden people feel the need to "hate on" something or somebody instead of simply hating the item or the person in question.

Don't get me started on extraneous apostrophes, people who type 'should of' and 'could of' or those people who think [i]per se[/i] is one word; 'persay.'

Not golf-specific errors, I grant you, but irritating nonetheless. How can you look at a post that contains the words 'I wish I would have went' or 'should of' and not immediately twig that it looks a bugger?

Gamer is not golf specific. Any sport in which there is the possibility of having multiples of the same piece of equipment or for designating game equipment from practice equipment ie; baseball bats, baseball gloves, hockey sticks, and YES to whoever said it, shoes in some sports. Im not sure of its origin but I doubt golfers invented it, and scotty definitely didnt invent it (something else he's borrowed and tried to copyright tho im sure).

I would be embarrassed to use the words "gaming" or "gamer". Maybe it is just because I am an old toot. It was even hard for me to tell people that the TopFlite I was trying out was a "Gamer". If it had been a "Gooser" or whatever, no problem. I mean, "goose" can be a verb. "Game" is not a verb. At least not yet.

My $0.02 worth.

ps: the "Gamer" was not bad, but I have other preferences as of now. Kind of like the word / name itself.

I personally like the phrase "Tour Sauce" to refer to a ball you make spin on an approach shot.

I realise it's not really the same thing but the Slazenger ball ad confuses me.

When referring to a golf ball, I'm not sure this is entirely wise, from a litigation point of view.

I forgot about the [i]your/you're[/i] and [i]there/their/they're[/i] issue. Very galling. Albeit not as jangling on the nerves (or, at least[i] my[/i] nerves) as misused apostrophes that are so glaringly out of place that they have you shaking your head in disbelief. Not everyone's got a degree in English, I know, but when [s]your[/s] you're reading a thread where someone is asking 'I'm thinking of picking up some new club's. How many of you guy's are gaming Mizuno's? What do you think of there iron's?' it's pitiful really. And particularly so when someone replies that they are, and goes on to describe them as 'like buttah.'

Also irksome is someone mentioning a new club they've seen and someone chiming in with 'No picks?' Er, no. Sorry. If you're looking to dig a hole in some tarmac I can't help, I'm afraid. 

'Prototype' and 'proto' are other overused golf-related nouns that also get on my wick. It's not the words themselves. It's simply that half of the supposed protos (proto's?) aren't anything of the sort; just new clubs that the writer hasn't seen before. Crack on and get the all-important buzzword in though. It makes it all sound a bit 'tour.' What's especially annoying for me, a man who detests a needless or spurious 'proto' monicker, is the fact that I'm currently using - sorry, [i]gaming[/i] - a lob wedge with the damn word stamped on the toe end of the bloody thing. Thinking about it, I should of got something else. I wish I would have went for a bog standard Vokey instead.
