Driver straight to 5 Wood?

Anybody do this?
Does anyone not use a 3 wood? I have a decent swing speed, but a naturally low flight of the ball. my 3W is just too low. Does anyone else go straight to a 5 wood after the driver?

I was thinking of getting a 4W, but since I buy everything used, its hard to find something like that

I do that, and it works just fine. I had a Superfast 3 Wood for alittle bit, but there wasn't much more than a 5-10 yard distance gap between the driver and between it and the 5 wood. I'm a high ball hitter, but this combonation works well, perhaps because of my swing speed. I say go for it. If worse comes to worse, you can always buy a 3 wood.

I'm 68 and have a slow SS so my experience may not be relevant, but FWIW, it hasn't been good. I alternate among a 4-wood (TM Rescue Fairway -- called a 3W, but with loft of 17*, an 18* 5-wood (TM V-Steel), and a 19* 3-hybrid (TM Rescue Mid). These are roughly equivalent but leave a 30-40 yard gap with my driver. If the lie is very good, or off the tee, I can use my 15* 3-wood (TM V-Steel), but often I can't and I find this very frustrating since it seems clear that there is no solution. My 4-wood is very easy to hit and probably gives the best distance of the three, so that would be my recommendation, but if your SS is good, you might also give the V-Steel 3w a try. It shouldn't be too hard to find a used one, and as 3-woods go, it is easy to get into the air. Good luck!

I do when playing an old set of clubs just for kicks, since my main goal with that setup is to just to get 2-iron yardage with a higher ball flight. With my main set the yardage gap is too big (~ 40 yards).

I go straight from driver to 2i hybrid. The only reason I'd put my 3w (906f2)in the bag is if I felt that the course required it (par 5 reachable in 2 etc). In my case very few courses require me to carry a 3w, but everybody is different. I love hitting the 906f2, but score wise I shot lower replacing it with a wedge.

I do, Ive all but given up on using my 3 wood for anything but a T shot. So its straight from the driver to the 18 v-steel. Hasn't hurt my game one bit, if anything its made me more consistent since i don't have the option to reach for that darn 3 wood that i can't hit. A good swing on my 18* and it will move about 230-40 and that is plenty of length for my game.

Yes I do...Here is how I see it. I hit my driver about 275 when I smash it and my 5 wood about 235 when I smash it. No need to chase after long par fives when I know I can't get there any how. Almost like forced course management.

Haven't used a 3w in years, currently driver and a 2 hybrid, I have 4 wedges, used to use a 4w but found a 2 hybrid (rapture v2 17) was easier to hit and went the same distance.

I dont really go for par 5s as I dont see the point in going for it, the shot barely ever comes off and why get yourself into trouble when you can lay up 40-60y short and have an easy pitch. With my 4 wedges I can play any kind of pitch I want.

I use a Driver - 4 Wood combination. It gives me the choice of different wedge or iron options.

Same here - best decision I ever made. The 4 wood is soooooooo much easier to hit, and the confidence allows me to hit multiple types of shot from the low runner to a high soft shot. My 4 wood is a Callaway Steelhead III - and they are an absolute steal.

For some reason a 5wd off the deck is a piece of cake, a 3 wd off the deck is a piece of $hit. For most 90's shooters I play with at least. 4 things can happen when I hit a 3wd off the deck and 3 of them are bad.
[/quote]

haha
You are batting .250 with the 3 wood. That's good enough for the big leagues. Heck, you could be in the 4 hole for my "professional (farm) team".

Seriously though, you make a great point. Many people carry the 3 because they think it's standard equipment. In reality most of us can't get much out of it, and it causes more headaches than hero shots.
