Ryan Moore with Ping irons (merged)

99% of the people that see him on tv are not going to notice the change. He still has a Scratch bag and is wearing the hat, that's the main thing.
I agree with you.... but now that I know, it does seem odd after following RM on this website through not only posters, but earlier posts by the company itself touting RM as not only one of its staff, but also as one of its owners who was supposed to have a hands on part with the company and its future developments.....

but from reading some of the companys most recent responses it appears that perhaps RM now doesn't have that kind of role with the company as first reported, and is merely now just a wedge player under contract. I have kinda became a fan of RM since his scratch involvement, basically because of this website and the way the company was relaying many of his stats, equipment preferences and so forth......

Usually when you see something like this, there is a change coming.....sounds like the change has already taken place, at least as far as what RM has to or wants to play...... maybe scratch is gonna drop there attempt at being a full line club maker and stick to their specialty of making custom wedges

I think this is getting blown out of proportion. Scratch is notorious for wedges and quality of grinds for the everyday golfer to get. Yes they have good irons as well but there niche is the wedges and as long as Ryan has the sweet scratch logo on his hat and bag and has the wedges in the bag then scratch is getting the name out there. Where is it our place on this forum to critizes or question scratch clubs because Ryan Moore is playing different irons 1 tournament out of 24 in 2010.

Hey guys, I am on the road and just saw this during a spare second. Our agreement with Ryan has centered around our wedges, which is the product that we have made our name on. Ryan has tinkered around with many many different clubs all year including about 10 different sets of irons that we have made for him. With this event in Malaysia, our Tour rep wasn't there to talk to Ryan or see what irons he has in play this week but I do know that he has played Scratch irons for the bulk of 2010 and has had the best year of his career. Ryan played great yesterday and I hope he continues his great play throughout the weekend!

No need to worry about Scratch as a company. We have had by far our best year ever in 2010, more than doubling our sales from 2009 despite the supply problems that we have faced this year. We are not going anywhere and you can expect some really exciting things from us in 2011, both club wise and on Tour.

Thanks Ari for clearing up all the "IF's" and second guessing that was going on. Rumor Central! :ok:

Let me preface what I am about to say - I dont' know bupkus about Ryan's contract. That said, something suggests Ryan's owner ship is much like what Greg Norman's was back when he was with Cobra and early MacGregor. In lieu of money, the player is given a sizable block of specific stock.

I believe from what i read, Ryan has stayed away from the larger manufacturers because he wanted to have the option to play whatever he wants. Scratch being an up and coming company, has probably given him the freedom to do so, and as their biggest advertiser, i see this as a good move by them. Restricting their star athlete, is not the best idea, seeing as how he has provided them with more visibility than any other golfer. He is still representing them in the most visible sense, with the hat... (the nascar hood) any non WRX'er is still going to recognize him as a scratch golfer... I have always liked ryan's approach to sponsers and wanting his golf winnings to set the tone for his earnings. Once again, congrats to scratch golf for making some of the highest quality products on the market... And bravo to Ryan for bucking the system, and staying true to his agenda of playing without falling into the big brother advertising, which tells you how to dress and what to play.

did u guys noticed some posts getting deleted on this thread? i wonder why? is it because scratch is a sponsor on this site?
There was a post where it showed all boxes instead of letters and a post asking about the boxes. I think those were the ones deleted. Nothing to do with the topic at hand, that I could see.

Only a matter of time until this thread gets moved to the WRX shop or other forum that gets lower traffic.

We don't play games here. We want to do the right thing for the average member. Hiding threads because they are sponsors isn't our style.

I do think this thread should be in tour.

Maybe this will mean that Scratch clubs will become more afforadable to the masses. I believe their equipment is great, but it shouldnt cost more than any other manufacture.

the tie is well, every time i see it makes me vomit a little more in my mouth. Ryan gets a hole in one at the masters, and no one wanted to show it because of the way he was dressed. :russian_roulette:

If I'm not mistaken. They did show his hole in one at the masters

Most manufacturer's put out cheap cast irons, hence the cheaper pricing. That is like asking to buy a Corvette at Chevette pricing. Yeah, you might get that price, but somewhere in that deal a chubby ugly girl is involved. Premium pricing with Scratch gets you much more options that a stock set of most any other manufacturer.

he looks like tool in that tie

Good effort- way to add to the discussion...

Why a perfectly legitimate topic such as this brings out sophomoric responses as the one above is beyond me...

Maybe its as simple as some here "in the know" have said; maybe there's more to it. It seems like I'm not the only one who, because of the immense amount of coverage RM's deal with Scratch got this summer, on THIS site, find it strange the responses that have come forth. CLEARLY, being a sponsor has its advantages- as it should. And yes, I have played their wedges and know they are of top quality( as I'm sure the rest of their iron offerings are). But c'mon, Scratch is not exactly a household name but when your marquee player bags an ENTIRE set of irons from another company it invariably brings up his overall comfort with their product..

Then again, I'm not in the know and I'm not a Scratch fanatic so I'm sure there's LESS to it...laugh.gif

Ping still makes harsh CAST clubs, now made in China. They lost me when they moved their production overseas. Ryan will see what happens when he asks them to make adjustments to their clubs for him, he will be on Don White's cell phone asking for another set of Scratch.
Are you trying to say that PING cannot make adjustments to the irons???? Or maybe they have no presence on the tour to support him???? Either way it was an idiotic comment, PING support blows away a small niche company like scratch....

Good to hear Richard....I'm not sure there's anything here that needs to be hidden from discussion. It's pretty well known that RM is a club ho, just like a bunch of us here.

I just didn't want to see this topic disappear, since it is interesting to follow his rationale and performance.

Ryan got a ton of press in the golf media this year when he became a part owner of scratch and began playing their irons. It's clear he had one of his best years of his career on tour playing with Scratch equipment. Not only is he their marque player, he has a vested interest in their successes and failures.

Sure, Ryan marches to his own beat with his clothes, attitude and approach to the game. However, this move is just plain stupid. Nothing good can come of his decision to put another company's irons in play. It's got to be the one of most uneducated and irresponsible move I have ever seen a tour player make. He's not just a staffer, he's part owner. Can you imagine Ely Callaway showing up to play Aviara 15 years ago with a bag full of Taylor Made irons?

I was looking at a set of DW customs grinds for 2011 to complement my Scratch Wedges, but the price had me really looking twice. Now if a PGA Tour professional and part owner of the company chooses not to put them in play, why should I. He can have his fit and finished to perfection, just like I can and he chose not to.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bigger deal than it is? It's just a loose cannon move.

This is odd and it is a big deal.

Maybe I shouldn't say this and maybe this will get deleted but I have observed a lot issues when it come to Scratch Golf. There is always something that seems to go wrong with Scratch's business relationships and they never seem to end well. Add to this the well documented cases of poor customer service and this may be a way bigger deal than we could ever guess. I hope this isn't the case. With Duval, Moore and TA3 playing their irons on tour the company seems like it is heading in the right direction.

But again I do think this is a potential black eye for Scratch.

zinger I agree. It's bad.

What I don't understand is why ryan moore gets so much play here on wrx. Who cares? He has 1 win on tour, dresses terribly, doesn't seem overly nice and has terrible golf shoes.

Him playing ping irons as as much news as me with a new pimple on my arm. Nobody outside of golfwrx even noticed or cared. The S56s are awesome irons and we don't know whats in his contract but If I had the chance to created my perfect custom irons, I probably would be playing those!

The media gives him attention because he is unique and different. I get that, and I am fine with it.

We on the forums want to see him do well, and give him attention because we've watched Scratch grow before our eyes on the forums. A couple brilliant guys started the company with a passion for golf just like we share here.

But it seems like it's just one thing after another, then a part owner and most recognized staffer plays PING irons in tournament golf!? Come on. Looking different is one thing, having no iron numbers, only degrees on your irons is unique, but playing another company's irons is a clown show. This is John Daly the Second.

LOL!! This is just getting ridiculous. The one guy said he was going to buy a 2011 TD DW irons but now will not because someone RM is not currently playing them. Seriously??? You should play what you wan because you want to not because someone is, or is not playing them. Its just kinda funny.

I dont know I just dont see the big deal, NO ONE outside of WRX will ever know what he is playing, or not playing.

I bet next time he plays he has one of his 10 sets of Scratch irons in the bag and then this whole crisis would be forgotten. But it has been pretty funny reading how some people totally over react on such a small situation.

Spy Zinger..... I think you have hit it dead solid perfect..... and unfortunately, there will be the typical fan boy response of " your a scratch hater" or something to that effect.

I am not sold on that its all RM acting as a loose cannon as you put it..... because as the other owner of scratch has stated, RM is having the best year of his career, why would anyone banking the best year of their career just up and ditch the irons of the company you supposedly own...... it almost looks as if what we all thought or were originally presented as to who, how, or what role RM would play for scratch may not actually be the same today.... and perhaps RM is putting his feelers out now or auditioning letting it known that he is available...... because I would think that even the other equipment companys out there were under the impression that RM was contractually bound for his irons and wedges...... me thinks that there will be a parting of company in the not too distant future

who knows.... all speculation, but I'm with you.... if RM is truely any kind of owner of scratch, its not a very good business decision to help grow the company you own....... I am having a hard time with the smell test on this move

What else influences your purchases with clubs you can't demo in stores? Are you telling me that if you are considering playing irons, and one of the owners of the company who is among the best players in golf plays PING irons, that it would not make you think twice about a niche brand?

The Golf Channel, Golfweek, Golf World, and Golf Digest covered his move to Scratch and their unique relationship. I disagree, it will attract media attention.
