AWT shafts and High Ball Hitter

any help is good personal stories are great
I "stole" my brothers I10's as I don't know how much he plays now that he's not working at a golf course anymore. That said they come with stock AWT shafts. I know they are "variable flight" shafts because of there weight..."keeping ball low in high irons and kicking them up in low irons". Now to the question, I am a natural high ball hitter from my steep attack at the ball are there any personal experiences out there of high ball hitters and these shafts. Have you swithched them out?

I'm typically a high ball hitter as well and just went to the Ping Fitting Centre to get my S58's checked out. The guy had me hitting 7-irons (S300's) to check out the ballflight with trackman. Smooth swings were on average 165yds with a high but penetrating ball flight. For giggles, he handed me another iron to check out the effects of a different lie angle. Little did I know he gave me an i15 with the AWT, with reg flex. Funny thing happened, yardages went way up (almost 15yards!), the ballflight was a little higher but not a whole lot, and the dispersion went down. When I noticed it was a reg flex, he tossed me the same iron with a stiff, same result but with a 10 yard increase. I'm not sure if its a stronger loft in the i15 vs S58's, or the shaft, or just a combo of the two, but it really has my interest.

There's a reason why Ping has made the AWT a stock offering for so long. They plain work for the average golfer. Like you say when struck well, high straight with penetrating ball flight. Always give them a try along with the KBS, Nippon and DG's.

I got to try them side by side against Nippons and KBS the other day. Honestly, if I was blindfolded, I thought they felt just as good as the KBS and Nippon. Unfortunately, I was just hitting into a net, so could tell the feel. Couldn't see ball flight/spin.

Anyone know who makes these? Some say True Temper, others say Nippon. I sent a question to Ping for clarification.

The problem with AWT (and other flighted) type shaft setups will show up in long irons if they are not a good fit for you. The common complaint is the distance spread between irons gets smaller in the 3,4,5,6. This is because it's not just overall weight that changes, but flex point, etc. The kick point gets lower in the shaft (to get the ball up), the overall stiffness gets softer, etc. Sweepers would tend to make better use of these type shafts.

Think of it like putting PX 6.5 in your 8,9,PW.... PX 6.0 in your 6,7.... and PX 5.5 in your 3,4,5. (Not exactly that flex range, but you get the idea). This may fit you really well if your approach to those irons fit those swing profiles. Most golfers would not notice any of these nuances...they just want to see the ball get off the ground more in longer irons...these type shaft setups are a great idea for a lot of golfers.

I am a high ball hitter and tried some AWTs in a set of Tour W wedges. They didn't go anywhere...52* wedge hit like a 56*, etc. Really wanted to like them, but no dice for me.

The wedges in AWT will have the lowest ball flight of the AWT set...which is still higher launch and higher spin compared to DG, PX, etc. If you are a high ball hitter, chances are you are steep and will get too much spin with AWT...distance will suffer. These type shafst sell really well in stores because they have a softer butt section and "Feel" smooth to most buyers compared to other choices which may fit them better in use.

I couldn't keep the flight of the longer irons down when I needed to - actually, I couldn't flight any of them as low as I wanted to. I'm generally a low-trajectory player, but I want to keep it really down sometimes and just couldn't do that with these shafts. The long irons had one flight: really freaking high. which is great when it's calm - when it blows, look out.

ZZ-65 would be best assuming you are at 160 carry with a 7 iron or greater, but that does not help you much I guess........ as your brothers clubs already have the AWT.
