Wedge lofts, what do you carry?? Two? Three?

I just bought three Miura wedges from Chip Usher of Usher Golf in Savannah,Georgia. He had everything in stock and will ship Monday with overnight delivery. That is what sealed the deal. I live in NC, but work out of state and will be home for 5 days around Christmas. Playing some golf with my dad and having these wedges in hand so soon made it hard to resist. I went with my old setup and had the Nippon NS blue shafts installed. The new Miura wedges are 52.7, 56.9, and 60.7. Being that I just started breaking 90 consistently I am not sure I can justify spending $550 on three wedges, but I am excited to find out for myself if these wedges will help my game. Thanks for all the input here. I appreciate it.

I play a 53 and a 60. Both 588's (the standard imho). Tried the 4 wedge setup years ago, but there were too many choices. With just the two wedges, it is not a debate anymore, the shot calls for clearly one or the other.

There is six degrees between them, but all that matters for me are the distances. Since I only go with either 1/2 or 3/4 swings before clubbing up, the yardages 'leap frog' each other. My irons are bent a degree weak across the board. Prefer the distances of a 21° 3i and 47-48° PW.

I've been playing 52,56,60 for years! I dont need three wedges , but i need 14 clubs.Plus i like the full short shots alot. When Nikes new wedges come out i'm going back to 50,54,58 thats my best choice.

I agree that it is all about yardage gaps. I go with 5 wedges, though I only really consider having 4. My set-up is, 50, 54, 58, 62, 65. I deloft the club an awful lot at impact hence why I have the 5 wedges, and such high of loft. If I want an effective loft of 45, then I need a 50* PW. I never try to hit a full wedge shot because the ball will fly too high and have too much spin to control. I tend to go at it about 85-90%.

PW - 150
AW - 130
SW - 115
LW - 100
TW - 80 & Under

Dana, so you have 46, 52, 56, 60? A bit of a gap between 46 and 52, but can definitely work. What are your yardages for all these guys?

After reading here, I am going to have my 46 changed to 47.

I swing my wedges 3/4.

46- 120-125
52- 105-110
56- 80-90
60- 65-70

Got the Nippon peening "blue" stiff shafts in the new Miuara's. Anyone familiar with this shaft I would be curious to hear thoughts as I have never heard of it. I took Chip's suggestion on this one. I have project x 6.0 in my Callaway X20 Tours and I like them, but do hit them pretty high. Wondering how the Nippon might compare ball flight wise. All I know about these Nippons is the website says they are butt kick and around 125 grams. Not sure what that means in the real world. Mine are 2 deg up and 1.25" over.

We have similar gaps...Looks like you are fine. Weakening the 46 won't be a bad idea. Just be careful you don't open up too much of a gap between the 46 and 42!

I say don't worry too much...go out there and make some birdies!

My $.02... I guess you could say I have 4 wedges since I have MX200s and the lofts are jacked (PW=45,GW=50). My thought though is that I have 2 wedges, a 56 with high bounce and a 60 with low bounce. I only hit full shots with the 50 and above, my wedges are used for all sorts of finesse shots. I do swing them full, but primarily I want them to be versatile. That being said, I keep it to 2 because I don't want to have too many options. For me its really a straight foreward approach. I did like MUXI's idea of the 64 tho and may replace my 60 with one of those.

Once upon a time I carried a Pw (48), Callaway X-tour 52 & 56, along with X-forged 60 & 64 but found that I needed to simplify, because I was consistantly overthinking shot selection (I had way too many options). Also carrying that many wedges seriously limited the effectiveness of my overall game.

Now I'm baggin' Vokey CC's at: 54/11 & 64/07 along with my Pw (48). They provide me with all of the versatility i need for my short game and leaves a lot of room to manipulate other club combinations (Hybrids, Long Irons or mixtures) at the top of my bag to match the course length, fairway width and tournament conditions I'm playing under.

It worked for me but keep in mind "only you know your game". You have to decide which shots you can hit consistantly and select the best wedge combination to get the job done for the way you play the game. Good luck - I hope that some of what I posted was helpful to you :)

Current setup is 52, 58, 64 degree Callaway X-Forged Vintage. Pretty versatile if you like hitting a lot of fractional shots, which I do. My standard setup is 48, 52, 56, 60, with the 48 being a real pw and not set-matching. I think the latter setup is good if the lofts aren't entirely jacked up through your set.

I played the majority of my golfing career with 48* PW, 52* GW, 56*SW, and 60* LW. Two years ago i switched out to just PW, 54* and 60* and changed the top end of my bag. I have found that most of the courses that i play on do not require the additional help at the top of the bag so i literally just went back to my old four wedge set up. I would rather have the options inside of the scoring zone than worrying about hitting a cut five wood versus a going draw with my 20 degree hybrid. Just made more sense to me.

I enjoy practicing different shots with the pw (46*). That club can be pretty versatile, so beyond that the 54, 60 setup works well.

My preference is to play a 50* gap wedge and a 56* (bent to 55*) and a 60*. I tried to go 52 and 58 but felt I was leaving something behind. I like having lots of options from in close. I only carry one fairway club in order to carry essentially four wedges counting my PW which is 46*.

47 pitching wedge 140 yds
54 gap/sand 125 yds
58 sand/lob 110 yds

Used to carry pw, 52, 56, 60 but never really used the 52 much, always finessed a pw. Ever since I stopped hitting my wedges 100% power, I have learned that my make up had to change. I may throw in a 62 for lob shots, but for now very comfortable opening a 58. But a low bounce 62 may be something of interest.
