Not to be a wet blanket or anything but . . .

As you are talking about a tournament using the GolfWRX name, it might be a great idea to run all of this past easyyy and/or GxGolfer somewhere along the line. I have absolutely no idea how they might react to this idea but since you are using their name, it would only be common courtesy (to say nothing of the legal niceties) to talk this over with them before this gets too far down the planning process.

Just a thought.

A WRX open would be great. My thought is that it should be held at a neutral location with regional qualifying tournament structure. So basically there would be qualifying all over the country and then one "OPEN". This would provide equal opportunity to all WRX's around the country and ensure that there isn't 144 Florida residents comprising the field. My $0.02.

Honestly the leg work involved in organizing one tournament of this size with people you have never met who dont live in your local area is going to be enough for me to handle. Couldnt even imagine running regional tourneys. Maybe next year. Not to mention the a couple of those regions would have to qualify at your local golf dome.. :russian_roulette:

Dont worry us Floridians dont bite. I think it will be more balanced than you would think.

Right, but the underlying point here is that there are lots of pros here on WRX. I myself am a scratch handicap, and feel it wouldn't be fair to the 10,20 and 30 handicaps out there if there wasn't some sort of regulation. Essentially 144 of the best golfers in the country, who no one has ever heard of could comprise the field, and that would eliminate the fun....in my opinion. Perhaps 3-4 "WRX OPENS" could be held all comprised of different handicap flights. Then we get 3 champions, equality is reached and everyone is happy.

Additionally, I feel that you're a bit ambitious for thinking that you can handle something of this magnitude.....alone. The WRX world is a lot larger than 144.
Talk about ambition...... 144 of the best golfers in the country that nobody ever heard of.....

Sounds to me like Sooner has things under control quite well.....

Sooner have you thought about a price point for this event????

I think you would be lucky to get 30 out of state WRX members to show up......
I must have confused you with the word "essentially.....", or you just didn't see it.....perhaps "hypothetically" is a better word for what I was trying to convey.

The part where you said "...30 out of state WRX's...." is my point entirely. What would be intriguing about a WRX OPEN, where 80% of the contestants are local residents of the city it's held in? Logistically speaking this isn't fair to the entire WRX community. Call it the WRX Florida Open if you're not willing to accommodate everyone in the country.

And to clarify, the point of qualifying would be to even out the competition, and provide equal opportunity to everyone who would like to be in one of the 144 spots.

A PM has already been sent to GXGolfer as of 10 min ago... I thought about that about 2 min after I posted the thread. Im trying to set up a skype or conference call with either of the founders/owners as soon as the holidays are over. As of now I am only trying to gauge interest, and would have no problem changing the name of the tournament to the Wet Blankie Tournament of Central Florida.. lol... jk..

What if the Open is more of a Social event so we all get to play a round of golf together. Meet the people we talk too sometimes on a daily basis. I don't see that it has to be a format to determine the best golfer on the forum. It could be just a bunch of guys with mutual interest (golf) going out and having fun golfing and busting each others balls for a day. Let go of the competitive side for a little :)

As of now EVERYONE is invited that is a golfwrx member. I dont care where you are from. Im sorry if you dont feel like I am accomodating everyone. But I feel like an open invitation to anyone who can get the time off and afford to come is pretty accomodating.

I could put in restrictions like you must be under 6' 1" but taller than 72"..lol

I changed, the name of the tournament, my contact email and some other things so there is no use of the sites name anywhere until I talk to Richard after the holidays.

Sorry if I upset anyone, it genuinely was not my intent.

Great idea, but without incentive, prizes and spirit of competition how are you going to lure in WRX's all over the country? I still stand by my initial statements, because you can't truly have an OPEN type tournament if there aren't ways to incorporate and make it fair to everyone in the country, continent and planet for that matter. Personally I would not attend because I'd probably end up paying thousands of dollars to get there, where as others would just have to drive a couple of minutes and sleep at home.

Chances are the field would be Floridians, and wealthy only. How is that fun?

BTW, I'm sorry to be such a "Debbie Downer", but I'm just really stuck on the fact that I'd be paying thousands to get there and others wouldn't.

I understand your point but let me handle the prizes and incentives. Like I said, I will hold open spots for any entrants from the qualifier you host, but I live in Orlando, I can get special rates for a tournament at the courses I work at so thats why I chose to host it here.

Sorry for any inconvenience. But like I said, everyone is invited, not every will be able to come. You can make it as cheap/expensive as you want. Hope to see you there.

Unfortunately, I likely won't be able to travel that far to make this type of an event, but I think the concept is a great idea. I would love to meet some fellow GolfWRX members at a golf tournament/social event. If you there is one in the Midwest (within 4 or 5 hours drive), I'd definitely consider going...
I recommend going to the Midwest WRX or Nebraska thread. There are always people looking to do something similar or you could start one in your area. Thats what I did about 3 months ago here in Orlando.

I think we should have a CALCUTTA!!! We could have 4 man teams, blind draw, true ABCD players. Sell off the teams before the tournament. I bet the pot could reach $100,000 easy. Split the pot over two days. Pay out half the pot each day over maybe 4 or 5 places. You could have an overall payout as well.

Only problem is that with that much money we would have to play 8-somes like they do in all the other big Calcutta tournaments. The one in Ocala gets up north of $100K. The one in Dothan gets up to $60K. The one in Alma gets up to $70K. I don't have a problem with 8, I'm trying get paid.

Mods deleted my initial response to this so allow me to be civil......I'm sorry if you feel the need to name call. My only intent with any of my posts was to identify the logistics and equality of this idea. I'm not "sucking the fun" out of the idea, as you metaphorically put, but rather voicing my opinion that you can't just come out and say "I want to throw a world wide golf tournament....and everyone is invited."

OP, sorry if I cluttered your thread. Honestly I'd be destroyed if I didn't get to attend this tournament because it's out of my price range, and 144 Floridians or Rich guys got there before me. I love WRX and if this idea were to actually come to fruition I would jump at the opportunity.

Well like I said earlier you can make it as cheap as possible, couch surfing/driving/carpooling. Just options. I agreed though that some people just cant make it happen financially. But honestly/sadly isnt that kind of the deal with golf from the get go?
Here's how I see it. I'm not rich or well to do but I figure it can be done pretty cheap. That's why I posted the SouthWest Air deals. It's probably like $80 each way 2 nights in a cheapo hotel $100/night and some food, Let's say at some local diner (see Guy Fiery Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) $10/ per meal.

$160 Air travel
$200 Hotel
$100 Food
$200 to golf at Open (high side)
$200 just in case cash

$860 total! Approximately what we would otherwise spend on club ho-ing in a couple of months anyway. However, you would have a lot more to talk about for years to come.

Make it cheaper you say? OK stay one night and share a room with someone

$160 Air Travel
$50 Hotel
$50 Food
$200 At the Open (High side)
$100 Just in case cash

$560 Total

Get me under $500... ok stay one night and share a room Be real frugal

$160 Air Travel
$50 Hotel (get one with continental breakfast.. Most hotels in Orlando)
$30 Food(MC Donald's)
$150 At the Open (No side bets, no buying anyone a drink, and have water).
$50 Just incase cash
$440 Total Now you are at the price of 1 new driver ;)

Yeesh, why is SOONERMAGIC now responsible for everyone's financial situation? I don't think I'll go down because it's not a great use of my money or time, but I'm having a hard time figuring how SOONERMAGIC's gracious volunteerism is to blame for that?

Man, one guys offers to do something nice, and is castigated for it...what is this world coming to...

I think you should start with post #1....and read them all. No one has "castigated" SOONERMAGIC.....just offered constructive opinions, criticism and suggestions. A few of us felt that "qualifying" would be a great option for this idea. When the OP argued against this, a couple of us...namely me, posted a few times regarding, why we thought it is necessary, pinpointing equality as the premise. Heck I even posted offering myself as a volunteer. If I can be a part of it, in any way shape or form....count me in.
