Well, I know. Should see a doctor but I'm trying for some WRX'er help. My lead hip has been in some pain for about 1-2 months and I'm not sure what it is. The pain comes in transition and is just below the hip bone.

Anyone experience this before or know ow to treat it?

The only thing I can think of is is your shoulders are turning too vertically through impact and not around (90*) your spine, that can put all sorts of pressure on the hip.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I had what felt very much like hip pain and it actually turned out being the gluteus medius. It's this tiny muscle that wraps around from your bum to the side. I would say do an MRI. If it is a hip problem then fine, that's another issue you need to deal with with some professional help. Real hip issues can become a disaster quickly if not dealt with aggressively. But if it turns out being just a muscle strain...it's something you can fix with regular stretching and strengthening.

Your hip flexors may be very tight and that can cause excruciating pain. If this is the case, some good stretching may be in order.

you should get this checked out. It could be a host of things from a little as some inflammation in the joint / muscles, to a labrum tear or cartilage grinding down.

I had something similar last year. Without going into a ton of detail I have extremely tight hipflexors due to a misshaped ball joint on my hip. Basically the bump on the joint cause the hipflexor muscles to become inflamed due to rubbing/snapping. After about 6 months of serious PT, stretching, etc. I avoided surgery to shave the bump on the joint down. Now I have to stretch / workout 3-4 times a week to maintain my range of motion. I am 28 and at some point will have to get surgery, but threw exercises, my doctor and I think I can prolong this for a long time.

Are you coming out of your posture during shots?

I have this exact same thing and I have seen a couple of Dr and trainers, it all boils down to not stretching good enough and not being "warmed up". I excercise a lot (Kettle B's) and do strectch, but what specific strecthes did you do to avoid this surgery if you don't mind me asking? Hate to thread jack here but it seems relevant. Tight hipflexors seem to be the bane of my exsitence!

Maybe I should clarify, stretching and strenghting the other muscles around the area have allowed me to avoid surgery. The bump on the bone is a natural defect that can not be corrected with out surgery. I do a lot of lunges, band work, abs etc, to keep my core strong. Everything I do is based off what my PT gave me and the TPI instructor I work with. The TPI site probably has some good information / exercises.

You know since I picked up golf I haven't been doing too much cardio where I think I need to do a lot of stretching. I do own Core Performance Golf and it definitely has some great info, it's a matter of putting it to use. I feel like I take the game for granted in that I'm not running so I don't need all the exercise. But in reality, I'm not stupid and therefore should not act stupid. Exercise and stretching to start today. A doctor to follow shortly.

Thanks for the response. I understood you. I have been doing type of strengthing excercise for over a year and am actually in the best shape of my life. I just have this lead hip pain that is best described as over use and inflammation and just can't seem to get strectched enough. IT Band stretches, crossovers, figure 4 stretches are all part of the routine, just was wondering if I was missing anything? Just took over 3 week off from golf and it felt great, even got some snowboarding in with no pain at all. Hit balls yesterdy, hello lead hip pain. Thanks for responding.

I would definitely see a doctor, but a good trainer or physical therapist may have some ideas. If it is toward the front of the hip could be similar to what I had. My problem was on the trailing hip and it was a tweeked tensor fascia latae (tfl). While it sounds like something you get at Starbucks, it is actually some small stabilizer muscles more on the front of the hip that tie into the ilio tibial band (IT band). They tend to get short and tight for those of us that are desk jockies, and take extra abuse when the glutes are weak or inhibited. Pretty simple fix if that is the case, anti-inflammatories, strengthen the glutes and core, and get more mobility in the affected area. Maybe some Active Release Treatment from a Chiro that does that also. Happens to be one of the things I am working on diligently.

Good luck!

See a doctor ,now

I cant stress this enough, being 33 with very very serious hip issues get to a doctor asap, even if it turns out to be something minor at least you know. I only wish I went to see a dr sooner, it took 7 months to figure out what was going on with my hips, between terrible dr's and waiting for appointments to open up, it has been much more of a process than I would have imagined, I just hope once you find the answer/solution your health insurance will cover it unlike mine :russian_roulette:

Edit forgot to add, in some cases depending on whats wrong with the hip some things like stretching/physical therapy, and extensive workouts/movement can cause more problems.

This is most likley L-5 S-1 back proublem very common for men in there late 30's to get this pain, golf will not help it but it can be treated. Go see a DR. before it gets bad, it will fast Cold weather doesnt help.

I get shots in my back 3 times a year and take meds daily for the last 6 years and I'm 48 now it sucks but you can control it.

Good Luck..

Yes, this has haunted me since picking up the game 2 years ago. But only recently when I began to post up on my lead leg has this caused pain.
[/quote]

ppjn348,

I would suggest to check whether you are shifting too much to the left in your pivot (i.e., swaying.)

If you pivot correctly, there should be equal load on the left and right hip in the release and follow through. If there was too much swaying to the left, the left hip is stretched in an unnatural manner in its socket, leading to pain.

My left hip used to hurt after every round of golf. I thought it was lack of flexibility on my part. Turned out I was swaying too much to the left in the downswing, in a misguided attempt to perform the weight transfer. Once the pivot was corrected, the hip no longer hurt.

Hope that helps.

I was messing around in the mirror last nite and realized how much I swayed into the lead leg. I was experimenting with the Knudsen idea with the left foot outside the left shoulder and have miimzed the pain. But I am still resting my hips at least rotationally and have implemented stretches and a few exercises.
