I think I solved the wedge question

Like many on these boards, i've been on the never-ending hunt for the correct wedge setup for me (50/54/58, 52/56/60, 50/56/60/64).... it never ended.

I play 2009 X-Forged - the PW is 47*.

I've tried a number of 50 and 52* gap wedges and still had a decent gap between my PW and GW. Plus, i never saw a big gap between GW and SW.

But i think i solved it -

I've gone the Jason Day / Carl Pettersson route - TWO pitching wedges. One set-matching, and the other a true wedge.

So my PW at 47*, along with X-Forged 48* / 54* / 60*.

I'm playing my 47* set matching PW like a 10 iron - i'm just not comfortable finnessing this club.

However, there's a modest gap to the 48* (about 10 - 15 yds), which makes sense given the 48* true wedge has a much lower CG than the set-matching PW.

I'm only going to pitch with the 48 / 54 / 60. I've got no mental or executional blocks finnessing these.

I'm DONE trying to convince myself that 47* to 50* is a reasonable 'gap', when the style / build of the clubs are totally different.

For me, i've solved the wedge connundrum!

you could spend some time on the range and learn how to hit different types of shots?????
I mean if your itchy to just buy a new wedge, well....i get that all the power to you

BUT i see no need to use to pitching wedges like that
i think your set up at 48 / 54 / 60 is a great set up and one MOST tour guys use as well

not trying to disrespect you, just saying that i see no need for two PW in your bag (wether your a 1-10 index i dont know)
if your more comfortable with a Cally 48º wedge, get one you like and match it with your wedges

i agree that i like my wedges to match....i like mine to flow nice from my PW to LW and mine do in the VR series blades to the VR forged wedges
my gaps are a PW (bent to 49º from 47º) then straight to a 54, then a 60º
works great for me, because i have practiced with it and know my yardages and can also execute half and 3/4 shots all day long

a short game isnt something you can buy.........it takes time, dedication and TONS of practice

I pretty much agree-

I was just never comfortable (which is different than never being successful) dialing down on the pitching wedge that matched my set. In other words, I just didn't care for the 3/4 shot w/ the wedge that matched the set.

However, i really like dialing down with the non-set 48*, down to the 54*, down to the 60*.

What i'm saying is, as strong as i want to go with the 48* is probably 90% - which introduces a reasonable gap to the 47* PW that comes with the set (which I don't like dialing down).

This is more or less the approach Jason Day and Carl Pettersson take (Day at 46.5 and 48, and Petterrson at 47 and 49).

It's working out, for me, I think because I really enjoy practicing 90%, 75% , and 50% shots with the 48 / 54 / 60 and really working on all those shots. I'm just not working the in-set 47* (which plays like a 10 iron).

I may end up taking the 47* out entirely, but i'm at 14 clubs and i'm not really feeling like adding anything else.
